    1. Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Brunswick Prisoners Held in Connecticut
    2. Suzanne Pryse
    3. Thanks Matt,   My ancestor was in the Specht regiment, but he stayed in PA.  Did not know part of the regiment went to Connecticut.  They went there after having been held in Charlottesville, VA or on the way to Charlottesville?   From what I have read the servants were not soldiers, but civilians that the officers brought with them.  Both General Reidesel and the Baronese brought civilian servants, according to their memoirs.   Suzanne Pryse From: Matt Reardon <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 9, 2012 7:37 PM Subject: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Brunswick Prisoners Held in Connecticut Ever since I discovered that prisoners from Burgoyne's army were housed in my town during the latter part of the war, I have always wondered who they were and where exactly they were held.  I've spent the last year of so digging through a bunch of sources and would like to share what I've found thus far with the list. As you probably already know prisoners of Burgoyne's army was sent back up to north as the war progressed in the south.  Well roughly 178 of those prisoners ended up in Connecticut and were to be divided between two towns, East Windsor (now South Windsor) and Tolland (my hometown). I discovered the following list in "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut."  It can be accessed for free online through google books.  These are the names of the Brunswick prisoners held between the two towns.  It lists the unit, the number of that unit held in Connecticut, the officer held prisoner, the number of that officer's servants (I assume these are probably enlisted soldiers?).  I haven't yet been able to separate the list by towns. Any suggestions where I can further my research on them in Connecticut would be greatly appreciated. -Matt Prinz Ludwig Dragoons-(3) Lieutenant August Bornemann (1. 1. Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] What is a "Fuselier"
    2. Robert Sulentic
    3. Fusilier. So named for a weapon, the "Fusil", another French word for a musket-like weapon that was of smaller caliber than the common musket. Although, at this time in the Hessian army, there was no difference in the kinds of muskets carried by fusiliers, musketiers, or Grenadiers. The Hessian fusilier regiments were all created (actually redesignated existing regiments) by Landgraf Frederick in the early 1760's in imitation of similarly named regiments in the Prussian Army. The name was not necessarily permanent. The Erbprinz fusilier regiment was redesignated as a musketier regiment in 1780. Hope that helps, -RNS -----Original Message----- >From: Nelda Percival <[email protected]> >Sent: Jun 5, 2012 7:27 PM >To: [email protected] >Subject: [AMREV-HESSIANS] What is a "Fuselier" > > >Hi, >Received a request off the list - included is her email in full - and please reply to both the list and her personal address... >Nelda >Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2012 22:40:31 -0700 >From: [email protected] >Subject: Question re Hessians >To: [email protected] > >I knew nothing about the Hessians--except the Battle of Trenton...and although I have learned exciting new info from your site...I have a question: > >My husband's ancestor was (Johann) Werner Bock. 3. Hello Dani, I posted a very brief definition of Fuselier on this mailing list a couple of months ago. See the thread “Hessian Terminology/Silent Film” dated 1 March 2012. FUSILIER was originally the name of a soldier armed with a light flintlock musket called the fusil. The word was first used around 1680, and has later developed into a regimental designation. There is more in depth information if you Google it, and others on this list may have more detailed information. Marie Rasnick Fetzer

    3. Jack, (List, some of you may be asking the same questions) Your question on replying to digest emails, the answer is simple click on your reply button, insure the mailing list address is in the "TO" line and the subject line has been changed to your subject. Then cut out all unneeded messages. make your comments and send. Or copy past the email address (addy) to a new email; copy paste the required data from the digest, Use an effective subject line, Make your comments and send. All, emails sent to the list are consolidated in the digest, but they are also sent separately to those signed up for normal messages. You will get a copy of your own message, either in the digest if that is what you signed up for or in normal emails if that was your choice. Nelda Nelda L. 1. Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] ADMIN NOTE:
    2. Patriot status by DAR standards could mean he only paid taxes to the Colonies after he was captured, or held prisoner and decided to join the other side. There was a huge effort by the Colonies to get the prisoners to defect from the "Hessian" ranks. They were successful in that campaign. Kevin D. Smeltzer

    3. Thank you, Barbara. I'll take any hints I can get! I have also noticed some clustering of descendants of Hessians - Greene Co., PA and possibly Licking Co., OH, specifically. I'll definitely check into Carroll Co., IN. Susan >It seems worth your while to check out Carroll County, Indiana, for descendents of Christopher Waggoner. My reasoning is that a group of Ansbach-Beyreuth soldiers seem to have descendents clustered in Carroll County at the second generation level. It seems apparent that at least a few were prisoners of war, and from the very early battles. Daniel and John Waggoner appeared there in 1829 at about the time some Brethren or Dunkard congregations migrated from Ohio, probably the Four Mile Creek area. Early confirmation records from a Lancaster Co. PA Reformed Church mentioned the parents as having been of the prisoners from Trenton. That church was German speaking and was a seed church for many Dunkard congregations that migrated into the Northwest Territory. It is a long and convoluted story but this is just a hint thrown your way. I'm just saying....... Barbara
