I have been trying for years now to find a list of the Hessian prisoners who were housed at these barracks in Virginia, but no one seems to be able to help me with this. Doesn't anyone on this website have this ? Reply offline if you would like. In particular, I am looking for a Johann Kreitzer (later Kritzer, Critzer, Criser, Crizer, etc.) Rufname unknown. He settled after the war within about 20 miles of Charlottesvile. Would appreciate any help. [email protected]
I haven't found an actual roster of those who were in the barracks, but there is a list of all Brunswickers and what happened to them. There is a book by Claus Reuter, Brunswick troops in North America, 1776-1783 : index of all soldiers who remained in North America. This is available at many libraries, in particular at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA. It is also available online for purchase at a fairly moderate price. Very interesting read. Also if you live near Charlottesville or Winchester, there might be resources available there, but I haven't tried yet. ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, July 15, 2012 12:24 PM Subject: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Charlottesville Barracks Roster I have been trying for years now to find a list of the Hessian prisoners who were housed at these barracks in Virginia, but no one seems to be able to help me with this. Not sure if this will help you directly, but I've been recently going through the documents on fold3.com. I've been able to find listings of the prisoners taken at Trenton. A year or so back they didn't have this. They are constantly updating what they have and I'd recommend any researchers on here to check on what they have. Never know what kinds of new information you'll be able to find. I am a direct descendant of one listed as John Nikalas Doney who was captured at Trenton, NJ by George Washington on Dec. 26, 1776. The record indicates that he moved to the Lower Mahanoy Township in Northumberland County, PA, married, and had at least three children: Abraham, John Adam and Anna Maria. It seems to me that John Nikalas' given name at birth was probably Johan or Johannes and that his last name, Doney, was an anglicized version of his original German name (possibly Thoene or Doehne?). The historical record also indicates that the approximately 900 Hessians captured at Trenton were first sent to Philadelphia and then to Lancaster, PA. I also assume that it is possible that the Hessian prisoners were put to work on farms in the Lancaster area, but I have found no information on their disposition. Can anyone provide more information on John Nikalas Doney or any of the other Hessians captured at Trenton?

The last time I was there they didn't have much on the German troops, although the AB flag was on display at the time. I recommend the Yorktown Pub on the waterfront for easy eats. The site is well worth the visit. I want to recreate my ancestor’s journey, and as usual am finding it very challenging trying to locate information on the Internet about the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment. I know there is information to be had, but it seems a lot of it is under lock and key in Germany, and/or in the hands of private collectors, so I need to find out just what’s available to the average person that’s written in the English language. I have also seen the large Bibliography of the holdings that the United States Army lists under the American Revolution, but it’s a little overwhelming to me and I don’t know where to begin. Of course I will start with the Döhla and Popp diaries which have a lot of information about their movements, but I really don’t have any experience researching military history and could use a steer in the right direction. John Merz told me that the Ansbachers were attached directly to British generals Howe and Clinton and served at Philadelphia, Newport, Springfield and Yorktown. Can anyone recommend good histories of these battles/campaigns which emphasize the Hessian involvement, or documents written by the regimental commanders? Has anyone written up a paper on the Ansbachers’ movements during the war (I think I will look into the JSHA archives for that)? I also would like to get a visual impression of the soldiers, but I’ve read there are no portraits of the uniform from that time, only general descriptions, and wonder if a reenactor group might exist. I found some interesting videos at a World News website: http://wn.com/Hessian_soldiers Hessian soldiers Part 1 and 2 Driving Tour of Carlisle Barracks Historical Moments-Reed Gold Mine (the Hessian portion starts about 3 1/2 minutes into the video, but tells of a soldier named John Reed as researched by the Johannes Schwalm Association) . There is also the 1909 Hessian Renegades film I posted earlier, plus other items you may or may not find interesting, if you look around. Play around with it and search for different battles of the war, etc. and see what you get. Marie Rasnick Fetzer

I’m wondering about regimental hats and the Ansbach-Bayreuth troops. Can it be generally said that grenadiers wore the miter hats and the musketeers wore the tricorn cap? Thanks, Marie Rasnick Fetzer
