If there are any of you that are part of this mailing list who have had the opportunity to review Riedesel’s Order Book and have taken down names from the book, I would appreciate if you could check for the following two men: 1. Johann Friedrich Tohn aka John F. Tohn/Tone. Born Saxony, Germany probably about 1750-52; fought at Bennington; 2. Johann Andreas Hensee (possibly Johann Andreas Hentze) aka Andrew Hensey. Born Germany; fought at Bennington with Lt. Col. Baum’s Prinz Ludwig Dragoon Regiment; was a prisoner Both ended up in the household of James Gordon in Voluntown, Connecticut shortly after Bennington. I have been unable to determine how they got there whether via escape during the march, escape from POW status, or whether they were farmed out and did not return to their German ranks. Both enlisted in 1781 with the Connecticut Line and served to the end of the war with Col. Samuel B. Webb’s Third Connecticut Regiment. I have not found reference to either of these men in either Reuter’s Brunswick Troops in North America 1776-1783 or in any of the Clifford Neal Smith monograms, and I would greatly appreciate any additional information that might be contained in Riedesel’s Order book. Since I live across country from New York, it is not possible for me to access the book myself Mary

Hello, I'm sure there are better informed folks to respond, but I haven't seen any responses yet so I'll weigh in. I'd say, given what you've related, that there's a strong possibility that he was a German soldier. He could have been one, like my Braunschweig soldier ancestor, who was among those marched up the Valley near the end of the War from Charlottesville where they had been barracked for several years. My ancestor, I believe, was allowed to "wander off" and settled in Rockingham County. Others went on to Winchester and, I believe, barracks in Lancaster, Penn. I checked my copy of Claus Reuter's Brunswick Troops in North America, but did not find Andreas Becker (Andrew Baker). It's also possible he wasn't a Brunswicker but a German soldier from one of the other areas in Germany (Hesse, Ansbach, etc.). It would pay to check "Hetrina"--the other major compilation of German auxiliary soldiers. Hi Elizabeth, I may be the only one remaining on this list serv who is related to Harmon. I can give you some info and contacts. I will also look at my email history. Seems like we do have a copy somewhere of what you are looking for. Will you contact me off list so we don't clutter it up? [email protected] Looking forward to hearing from you. Hello Hessians! A multi-pronged question: If a Hessian had brought a wife and/or children with him and he was captured, what generally happened to the family? Were there ever children and wives actually housed in the Hessian Barracks in Frederick? If a soldier died and left an orphan, who would have been in charge of seeing the child was taken care of - the Chaplain perhaps? Thank you for any help with this.
