    1. Re: German Research: Ernst Martini, Brunswick soldier.
    2. John Merz
    3. Dear Betty Ann Bowles; I hope you don't mind me putting your query over the list, because it needs help from our subscribers. You know that there are many who are in the same boat with you, looking up and down the Shenandoah Valley for marriages and births and/or land deals, etc., You did find the birth place of your Ernst Martini/Martinie in Bad Gandersheim, which is in the southern part of Lower Saxony, but I am wondering about your remark that his parents came from the Ansbach area, which is in Bavaria, in the region of Oberfranken to be correct. I am unable to quote any genealogical researchers for either place, but perhaps someone from the list has made good experiences with some person. I would suggest to try to post to the corresponding Rootsweb Mailing Lists, for instance DEU-FRANKENLAND-L@rootsweb.com as far as Ansbach is concerned, or check http://www.rootsweb.com for other Mailing Lists, perhaps a list for Niedersachsen/Lower-Saxony. But there is a Rootsweb Surname Board "MARTINI" which has about 114 entries at this point in time, but checking the search engine for the Board, there is no Ernst, no Gandersheim, and no Bowles to find. Which means, before you spend any good cash for research in Germany, you should explore the many avenues our Internet, in particular Rootsweb, has to offer for FREE by just looking for in the right places. This I would recommend to all family researchers, there is so much information out there, and there are so many people trying to help if you just ask. Put your queries out and wait for someone to pick up on it. It may take some time, very often it just takes hours to have results, some times it will take years. I believe in the system, I have had great success with the Rootsweb Message Boards and Mailing Lists for my own family research. This is all I can help you with, as you know or heard perhaps, I am giving up this list, and this is probably my second last posting as the list administrator. Good luck, and the very best, John Helmut Merz. ----- Original Message ----- From: Betty Ann Bowles Sent: Tuesday, August 31, 2004 7:09 PM Subject: German Research Hi, First, I want to thank you for the superb job you have done with all your Hessian knowledge and materials! Do you know of any reliable researchers who could do research for me in the areas of Bad Gandersheim and Ansbach? It is my understanding that these two areas are about 200 miles apart, so I would probably need two different researchers. My "Hessian", Ernst Friedrich Julius Martini was born in Gandersheim and according to his birth records in the Lutheran Church there, his father and uncle were from the Ansbach region. Since I would like to know more about his life in Germany, I would like to pay for research in those areas. I have looked at many advertised German researchers but they all seem to be located in the southern part of Germany and not in the northern/central areas. Any information or guidance will be appreciated very much. Thank you! Betty Ann Bowles

    3. John, I know it tears you up to have to slow down, but do what the doctor says and enjoy your rest. It is well deserved. You have helped many of us along in our research, and we need you still for an answer now and then. Please keep an eye on the list and jump in when you can't stand being quiet! 3. Dear John; Sorry to see you go. But time does march on, and at some point one has to make a decision, even though I'm sure it was a difficult one.. You will be sorely missed by all those on the AMREV-HESSIAN-L and the QUEBEC-HESSIAN-L lists and all the others you helped over the years. You have been a great help to not only myself, but to many others who simply did not know where to begin searching for their Hessian ancestors. You almost single-handedly made the name Hessians and Brunswickers kown here in Quebec and elsewhere in North America, not as mercenaries, but as valourous soldiers who came over to help keep this country what it is today. I wish you (and Emmi of course) long years of good health and active research, as I know you will not quit - genealogists and historians simply do not stop!! Unfortunately I wasn't able to provide as much support over the last couple of years as I wanted to, and I felt bad about that. But family events of which you are aware intervened. Best regards and hope to hear from you from time to time Frank Watters St-Bruno, Qc. Canada

I visted Marburg and photographed the desertion list containing my ancestor Johannes Heinrich Degenhardt and I spent a week in his home village of Oelshausen near Zierenburg. 3. Hello family researchers; As you probably heard a few times now, our Hessian Day at the Rose House Museum came and went, and from all sides I hear how happy everyone was. My family and I left earlier as planned due to feeling over-tired, and quite a few visitors missed my presence. Some wanted to still buy my book of which a few were left over, although we sold out on the "Hessian Descendant Lapel Pins". The book is now listed on e-Bay under my sellers name the-hessian or check www.ebay.com under books and look for 'Hessians' If you still want some lapel pins or pendants, e-mail Mr. Robert Fetters, fetters@bright.net He told me that he has a few available still. As I am giving up my hobby of Hessian research by the middle of September, this will be pretty well your last chance of obtaining any of my books from me. Thanks for all your help and support over the years. Cheers, John Helmut Merz. Hamilton, Ontario. "A Hurray to our Canadian Olympians - welcome home to all"

    3. William -- This three part monograph, published in Nov 1992, is available via LDS Family History Centers under US/CAN Book call number "973 W2smn no. 28 pt. 1-3". It was compiled from HETRINA as listed in the LDS FHL catalog: -- "The following subseries of monographs in the German-American Genealogical Research Series represents research on the soldiers of Kurhessen (Electoral Hesse) which has been done as a result of the publication of the muster rolls in the Staatsarchiv Marburg, entitled "Hessische Truppen im amerikanischen Unabhaengigkeitskrieg (Hetrina). Hetrina, by which this seminal work is known--certainly one of the most important in German-American genealogical research--is a collection of four volumes of computer runs representing the analysis of a large body of muster rolls in the State Archives in Marburg. Only about a hundred sets of Hetrina are known to exist in the United States. Note that this piece only cites to HETRINA vols I through IV (HETRINA V is re: troops fro! m Waldeck & HETRINA VI is re: troops from Hesse-Hanau). The LDS FHL Catalog lists the parts as published under three ISBNs, viz-- 0915162938 (Pt. 1), 0915162946 (Pt. 2), 0915162954 (Pt. 3). Barnes & Noble lists the last two ISBNs as applicable to Parts 1 and 2, respectively, but neither lists an ISBN for Part 3 nor recognizes ISBN 0915162938. The original document referred to in HETRINA are the "Monatliche Listen" [monthy reports] in the old "blaue Nr." [blue number] series at the archives in Marburg. The place of origin and age given in the reports were extracted into HETRINA. About the only other information which may be given is the man's height (measured by the Prussian system of Fuß, Zoll and Strich where 1 Fuß = 12 Zoll and 1 Zoll = 4 Strich =2.62 cm) and the exact date of desertion and probably names the place of desertion. My limited experience with the series shows that there was no consistency in the structure of the Monatliche Listen. Some follow the standard British reporting structure and others are more or less composite lists of transfers (in and out), promotions, deserters, deaths, etc. Bob Brooks ----- Original Message ----- From: WILLIAM M HORNER To: AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, August 30, 2004 1:08 AM Subject: Re: [HESSIAN] Re: SPIES - SPEES - Lost in America... 3. Dear William, you are lucky that I still have the monograph here in front of me, but in about 3 weeks It will be with the SAR Library in Louisville> February 1781was not a busy desertion month - the monograph lists only 28 desertions from Hessian regiments (others like Brunswickers are nit covered) - yourMehlmann was from the 5. Company of the Bose Regt. Other Bose desertions in same month: Degenhardt, Christoph 4.Comp. Fischer, Johannes 4.Comp. August von Heine 3. Comp. Henning, Adam 2. Comp. Hermann, Gottlob 2. Comp. The Hessen-Kassel Regiment von Bose was involved in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse which took place March 15, 1781, those desertions must have taken place prior to the march towards Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. 3. Hi Julie; Johannes Fernau we have discussed on this list since 1998. The 4.Company Hessen-Kassel Erbprinz Soldier JUSTUS FERNAU, born 1748/49 in Eschwege/Hessen, is not only 6 years older as Johannes and born in a different location. His Hetrina entries list him as a prisoner in Sep.1782 and as a deserter in Sep.1782. These are the only entries for Justus in Hetrina III. Soldiers who sold themselves (indentured) were not listed as such in the Hetrina volumes I to V, but in Hetrina VI (Hanau) there is the special designation 32 - Indentured Servant. So it could well be that the date of Septeber 1782 and deserted would indicate that this soldier sold himself, meaning he left German service without permission of his German superiors, and that was equal to desertion. 3. Hello folks, After having rested and having spent another few days up in Huntsville, Ontario's Muskoka region with my relatives who were visiting from Germany, I finally can acknowledge that we all had a wonderful time and everything went very well. Here is what Susan Rose, the curator of the Rose House wrote to me after the event on Saturday, and on the Monday after. My personal thanks to everybody who made this such a success. John Helmut Merz, back in Hamilton with lots of work to do. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rose House Museum" <rosemuseum@pecounty.on.ca> To: "John Merz" <hessian@sympatico.ca> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 10:47 PM Subject: RE: "HESSIAN DAY" at the Rose House - > Hello John..well I hope you are resting up! the day was wonderful and we sure have received great coverage. I will send you all the articles and photos I receive. My bosses in the office are so glad and are overwhelmed at the number of calls that have come, saying what a great day the people had and such a great place 'Rose House' and the wonderful job you, John, did for our Community! I will be in touch of course. I too wanted to thank you family for all their help..but everyone got away so fast! I had a good chat with the Nortons' and gave them some appreciation gifts from Rose House, and paid their accomodations- they did a great job and answer a lot of questions too! Again John thank you from the bottom of my heart, I found it a very emotional day,,thinking how my father in law (last Rose born in the house) would have really enjoyed the day. 3. To all my Hessian researchers on this AMREV-HESSIANS list: A subject has been brought up between researchers of the American Revolution, and it seems some difference of opinions arose. Myself, as much as I would like to help, am so busy preparing my research material for transfer to the S.A.R. and I am practically at this point in time, out of the loop! Soon will give up this list as well. Please help those fellows with some facts, thank you, John Helmut Merz - determined to retire. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=amrev-hessians ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Merz" <hessian@sympatico.ca> To: "Barry Wetherington" <cbarrfly@comcast.net>; Sent: Friday, August 13, 2004 10:54 AM Subject: Re: Von Heer Troop > Dear Barry, > > I have seen a number of e-mails come into my in-box in respect to > this issue. > > Unfortunately due to the fact that I am preparing for a big event > (big for me and the Hessians of Marysburg, Ontario) which takes > place next Saturday, 21. 3. Hello Ernest, thank you very much for letting me know about the progress made on the history of your Hessian ancestor. Good luck to you and your cousins. Cheers, John Merz ----- Original Message ----- From: Ernest P. Boland To: hessian@sympatico.ca Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2004 12:59 PM Subject: This and that Hi John, I am still working on the Johannes Bohland family data started by me in the year of 1964. My Hessian Soldier was Johann Heinrich Bohland (aka John Boland) from the von Ditfurth Regiment 3rd Company. In the year 2000 we formed the John Boland Family Association in Little Mountain, South Carolina (Deutsch Fork) and my cousin Donald W. Whitaker was appointed the Family Genealogist. He asked me to contribute my Boland files and also be his assistant. I did this. We are near the point of publication of a two volume book on our Hessian Soldier's life and descendants. I have not heard from you or about you for some time now so just thought I'd drop you a line and tell you thanks for all the help you gave me back several years ago. I have established contact with my Germany family who still live in Haine, Allendorf, Hessen. As a matter of fact a cousin owns and lives in the rebuilt home on the same land where my g,g,g,grandfather Johann Heinrich Bohland was born on June 02, 1755. I trust you are doing well. Again thank you for all your past help. Sincerely, Ernest P. Boland Hessian Descendant
