    3. Hello Carolyn; I have just pulled a book from my shelves which may be of interest to you or others searching for Hessians (or Ansbachers) in Virginia. It is a softcover written by Klaus Wust, published by the University Press of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA., 310 pages. it was my Source #57, and it has some answers as to your questions re: Hessians. On page 87 and 88 he mentions that the Continental Congress in 1776 offered fifty acres of land to any Hessian private soldier deserting the British colors. In 1781 Governor Jefferson renewed and enlarged this offer during the invasion of Virginia, "further promising to all such foreigners who shall leave the armies of his Brittanic majesty while in this state and repair fortwith to me at this place, that they shall receive from this Commonwealth a further donation of two cows, and an exemption during the present war from all taxes for the support therof and fromall militia and military service." These offers, of course, did not apply to Hessians who were already prisoners of war. Inevitable contacts with the civilian population and with German-speaking militia guards resulted in the defection of many during the war. Some espoused the American cause whole- heartedly and soon differed in no way from the local Germans. -- I think I quoted enough from this book, it is interesting reading, mind you, it is the story of the German settlers of Virginia with naming the many pioneers long before the American Revolution. Having this book on my shelves will tempt me time and again to look for names, and this is against my retirement plans. Therefore I will put it up for sale on eBay this evening. Cheers, John Helmut Merz the-hessian btw. the name Bitter is not mentioned, neither Bittenholzer, but it lists a John Caspar Barth, a Jaeger, and some of his comrades. ..................................................... 3. Last words to the outcome of your Presidential Election - from your Canadian (former German) mail list administrator: My intent was not to start a political discussions when I purposely choose the above subject line - I knew it would attract your attention, and I wanted to get you to read my message. = You did = but then came four short postings from you which cleared up the whole political issue in a nut shell. The U.S.A. is one divided country! 51% against 49% = "but all of you are anxious to find out what comes next" . So do we Canadians, in fact so does the whole world. We hope that you will work together for the well-being of your country, because if you do, the whole world will benefit. I am not in politics, this list is not here for political statements, but we are all humans, we try to be good humans, let's think human. Let's think of human dignity- be human for God's sake! 2. Good Morning John: While I have had no success in finding my ancestor, Hartmann Diehl, that I believe was a Hessian, I am active in reading all the messages with the hope that I will recognize a name similar to Diehl/Diel/Thiel or married names in the family that will may prove to be a worthy contact. Trust that your health is better and that you can enjoy all the free time that you now have since you have given your files to others. God Bless. George Diehl

    3. Hello Hessians, hello Jane, and hello Nelda, and hello Carolyn: Jane, you brought up the Rootsweb WorldConnect project and gave some leads in respect to Heinrich BITTER, who is being investigated by Carolyn. It all got me a bit confused, so I started to do some basic research, and I had a bulls eye. Remember that I suggested to Carolyn that Heinrich could have changed his name. I had this Ansbach-Bayreuther in my files, Heinrich Bittenholzer, who deserted in June 1783 according to the military files. This date of course is not carved in stone, he may have gone much earlier, but went unreported. I checked the German Telephone on-line directory for the name and hit a blank, but when I tried some variations, I found that there were about 40 listings in Western Germany of the name BUETTENHOELZER (the u and the o being Umlauts), and guess what, I did a search on the Rootsweb WorldConnect for the name BITTENHELZER and to my surprise here came two entries for this name, both for a Heinrich. Now hear this: Karen Moore kmoore2002@home.com and Suzanne Baird sbaird@nvahomes.com are looking for Henry BITTENHELZER, who married 5. April 1788 in Shenandoah, Virginia to Elizabeth BEARD, born 1753 in Augusta, VA. Her father was Zachariah BARD, born abt.1719 in Germany. Well, those two descendants at least do know now who this Henry Bittenhelzer was, I know that he married, and we all know a little more. Except I don't know if this has helped our subscriber Carolyn, she may have to look further. That's all I can do for now, best wishes, John Helmut Merz

    3. Hello Carolyn, a little correction, if you have followed the postings on this list, you will notice that the Ansbach-Bayreuth troops are NOT listed in Hetrina, so this man I mentioned cannot be found there. Another clarification, if one was called a Hessian soldier by his neighbours or enemies, didn't mean he still was serving as such. It was a label all of them carried to their last day in life, even if they had served in some patriotic units after their desertion from the 'Hessians'. Once a Hess, always a Hess! But there is nothing wrong with your searching the Hetrina volumes, there was one BITTER (Arnold), there may have been others, serving in other Hessian units. As a last but equally important advice to you, I would recommend very strongly to search for the name BITTER on the Rootsweb Surname Board BITTER http://boards.rootsweb.com and type in Bitter, you will find it very entertaining and rewarding. That's it for me, good luck in your search, keep your mind open, Cheers, John Helmut Merz. 3. Hi Carolyn, From your post "Johannes, son of Heinrich Bitters, a Hessian soldier, and Elizabeth, b. Dec. l, 1784". and I am curious if you have ever come across Hessian soldiers marrying while still being active participants in the Hessian army during the Rev. War. The Rev War according to the signing of the treaty in Paris was over in Sept 1783, this gives over a year from that date to the birth of Johannes, They may have even married after the war was over.. Just a thought if you are looking for the date of the marriage. Nelda Nelda L. 1. Heinrich Bitter/Hessian Soldier
    2. John - Thank you for the information. It never occurred to me that Heinrich could have changed his last name. I have sent to see if he is listed in the Hetrina volumes. His first son's birth is listed in the German Presbyterian Church Cohansey (located in Upper Hopewell Twp., NJ) as follows: "Johannes, son of Heinrich Bitters, a Hessian soldier, and Elizabeth, b. Dec. l, 1784". I thought it odd that they would indicate in a church record that he was a Hessian soldier unless maybe that was his occupation at the time. I am curious if you have ever come across Hessian soldiers marrying while still being active participants in the Hessian army during the Rev. War. From what I have read, most of them married after deserting. Carolyn Bartee

    3. Hello Carolyn; this is the first message I read this morning, and having had a good breakfast, read the paper which didn't much excite me today, your search gave me a bit of a jolt, and as you see, my brain started to click - Yes, there is a Hessen-Kassel soldier vom the Regiment v.Lossberg with the name of Arnold BITTER, he was a Trenton prisoner in 1776, and I was able to check my old computer's disk for his PDF, well, he sure is not identical with yours. But hold on - In my GUIDE right above the name of BITTER, there is listed a name for which in all my long years of research I have not received one single solitary enquiry from anybody, which makes me believe that this man in all likelihood changed his name, shortened it or whatever. His name was Heinrich BITTENHOLZER, he was with the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment which was captured at Yorktown, VA., in October 1781, at that time under the command of Lord Cornwallis, who surrendered his army at that time to General Washington. The prisoners were taken inland to Frederick, Maryland. In May 1783, after peace was announced, the prisoners were ordered to march to New York to join their Regiments for transfer home. Heinrich Bittenholzer however decided to remain in the USA and in June deserted, anyway, that's what his officer reported. We have not heard from him again and I suspect that he most likely shortened his name, who wants to listen to this 'tongue-breaker' BITTENHOLZER, when BITTER could do much better. This is just a hunch of mine, not scientifically nailed down, but then these name changes have confounded others for generations. My 2 Canadian pennies worth, cheerfully, John Helmut Merz.
