    1. Re: [HESSIAN] Hessian or 1812 dna
    2. I am not a DNA expert, but I have had had some tests from Family Tree DNA for myself. I can say without reservation, though, that there is no such thing as special "German" or "Hessian" DNA - it does not work that way, although the regions of ancient peoples can be isolated with excavations . There is absolutely no such thing as "American/Anglo Saxon "blood/DNA". The only "American blood" DNA is that of Native Americans. There are various DNA types of European peoples. My Y-DNA is called E3b, which is not very common in Northern Europe - although it is "Indo-European", it is associated with the Mediteranian. We surmise that a male from there came up north (my male line comes from Germany) in the Neo-Neolithic expansion. Other men that have had the same test done, whose (male) ancestry is Dutch, Swedish, etc., have had the same type. 3. Hi, Well, the subject has been discussed and as a research tool for Hessians it is not viable... I am not saying its not a viable tool for genealogy research of a particular surname. It is. But that needs to be discussed off list. thank you List Manager in this case! Pax et bonum! Nelda L. 2. The only way that it will be useful is if there is a family project of straight-line male descendants of a particular Hessian, so that their (male) Y-DNA could be tested and compared to different lines. The (female) mtDNA would not be of any use. I know of living relatives from a straight male line of my ancestor, Daniel Engelcke, but I have not asked any of them if they would participate in such a study. It would not do much to prove anything interesting to us, because I do not know of another line from a different son(s) of the soldier. It would not include me, either, as a participant because I am a not a male straight-line descendant. 3. As I said I am researching my ancestor of surname Carrel who may have arrived in North America about the time of the Revolutionary War. I don't care if he was a Hessian mercenary or not. I am looking for anyone of surname Carrel or Correll who came to North America about the time of the Revolutionary War, but not from Britian. I have learned that there were Hessians with that surname who stayed here. If any male descendant of such a Carrel is alive today - I invite him to join the Carroll surname family Y-DNA project now under way. Of course there is no such thing as Hessian "blood" and I never suggested there was. There is however such a thing as a Carrel Y-DNA haplotype, which has nothing to do with any gene or medical condition, Hessian or otherwise. 3. Dear Nelda, LOL - I said - "That's a pity. What about discussion about Hessian DNA?" And the reason I said that Nelda is because I am on a search for my ancestor Philip Carrel's father who may have been a Hessian soldier hired by Britian during the American Revolutionary War, captured or deserted at the second battle of Trenton, and standing down and naturalized in Eastern Pennsylvania. My ancestor Philip Carrel was born in either eastern Pennsylvania or Germany. I am trying to find, out by whatever means available, who his father was. He may have been Johan Conrad Carrel, a Hessian soldier known to have been captured, but not to have died, imprisoned in Bucks County, and to not have returned to Germany. A blacksmith by trade. Probably from the Sachen (Saxony -Leipzig area), as his living male descendant's Y-DNA family project indicates a Slavic or Wendish ancient origin. Although he is proven to haved served in the second War of Independence, 1812-1813, I have no proof that he was a Hessian mercenary as yet. I am simply trying to find more information... No I'm sorry, this list from creation by John in 1998 has always been just Hessians of the American Rev War. It must remain that way.. with over 500 members... who are here for Hessians, it would be unfair to burden thier mail boxes with unrelated subjects. Saying something like John Jacob Bonstein served 0000 to 0000 as a Hessian and then in the War of 1812 date 0000 - 0000 ... would be ok but to discuss his service in the 1812 is off topic... 3. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Barry Wetherington" <cbarrfly@comcast.net> Date: Wed, 2 Mar 2005 14:24:05 -0700 (Reposted): Frederick "Titius (Tecius) - Reading, March 15, 1780;" a von Heer Dragoon - [SURNAME variations: TISIUS TITIUS TECIUS TISSIUS DECIOUS DeCius/DECIUS DETIOUS DICIUS DCIOUS DEUOUS Detives ("Indexed as" Detives) - Author: Clarence William Decius & " 'Recorded American History of the Tisius, Dicius, Decius, Dcious, DeCius Family 1780-1983' " Hello Hessians, This is perhaps the most puzzling surname I have ever encountered. In other circumstances, we can usually count on some consistency in spelling, at least a common starting letter, but . . . as you can see, anything but that for our intrepid von Heer Dragoons Hessian trooper Frederick. (It is said that only Hessians could be a member of this special dragoons troop, probably because Congress authorized additional and trustworthy protection for Gen'l Washington, possibly in light of the attempted assasination of the Gen'l by a member of the original anglo-saxon heritage CinC guards). Below are addl sometimes chaotic refs to a number of supposed alternative spellings & sources for this heritage. In looking for a RootsWeb mailing list to which to post this msg, I could determine no specific such. I may have to initiate such a List, hoping some descendant would eventually surface to pursue heritage for Frederick. (As just an idle thought, are any of the other von Heers Dragoons also not so represented?). Thanks to Jane Curci for a big boost (& I see Jane has posted again; more good info to process!). 1. List asdministrator note to list members
    2. Nelda Percival
    3. HI, You all probably pretty much know what a mailing is is and what its for, but each List administrator has their own way of approaching management. I would like at this time to share mine with you. In 1999 when I first started (created) some of the list I still manage I wrote an email to a person asking questions about mailing lists.. Here is what I answered and still use to this day... Hi, What you are subscribed to is a mailing list. A mailing list is a group of people researching the same surname/ subject / or area of land, as the list's name. The email you send to the list goes out individually to each member of the list (including a copy back to you) from the server. We should email to the list address with who we are, whom / what we are trying to find and or what we would like to share with others. If like myself you have lots to offer then you state what you have and are willing to share. If you read an email that you can help with, then answer that email. Directly if you want to, but I ask that it be sent to the list so that all may share the information. (a copy is also stored in the archives.) If you find a website or anything that may help another member then send part of the info and the URL to the mailing list. When answering by reply to an email keep that subject in the subject line, but delete most of the first message so that it doesn't take up so much room. This keeps the messages together in the archives and uses less memory space. Change subject line when the body of the subject changes. Use subject lines accurately, in other words not just Help/need info but, a precise name and dates and place if you have it. A descriptive subject is much more likely to get a response as old timers sometimes won’t read all emails and go by subject lines only. As long as the conversations between members of the list are about genealogy type things then by all means keep it on the list. But, if it is a private message, jokes..ect. then send it to the members private email address, not the list. List subjects should be kept on tract. When someone helps you, either privately or on the list let them know how much that help meant to you. Some times you can even let everybody know how helpful this person is by letting the list know. All of us need to be appreciated publicly once in a while. If you are offended by what someone has to say then still be courteous about your answer. Do not Flame anyone.. (Flaming will get you removed from the list for one week, repeated offense will be perminate removal) If you have a problem then bring it to the list's admin privately, for that is one of the jobs an administrator is supposed to do, be a moderator. The Administrator has the finale word about anything, except rootsweb.com policy which none will violate including the administrator. Even though we do not personally know each other, we are members of the same family, even if there is no connection by surname. For we are members of the family of genealogist, and it is by helping each other that we will keep our free study of our many varied histories. Also one other thing, before you send an email of someone else’s to another party (person) have their permission. Rootsweb.com wants all of us to obey the copyright laws.. Direct advertisement of items for sale, must first be approved by rootsweb.com staff and your list administrator first. Grayscale, as we on the list adminrstors list call it will be allowed on this list... What is gray scale advertisement: example: in your email state something to the effect... I have volume 4 of the Heternia set that I no longer need.(you might give a defination of what the book is about) Please contact me off list.... another example: Hertage Plaques for the list are still available. If interested Please contact me off list. another example: While serfing the net I found a website where books (list name can be obtained) contact me off list... Grayscale is allowed by some list administrators and not by others, I believe that letting someone know there are books out there to help in research, is what we are about, but also that the rules must be followed. I hope this explains what a mailing list is, what it is for and how to use it. Nelda END OF MY 1999 message I hope that explains what/how I will be administrating this list Nelda List Administrator
