John B. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Pooler [mailto:maderarocks@kuhncom.net] Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 8:12 PM To: AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HESSIAN] Hessian Prisoners at Ft. Frederick (Answers) Being brand new to this site, I didn't anticipate many questions on my posting, but I'll try to answer each as follows: 1. About posting the list of 182 names. I just checked, and the information goes on for 30 pages. It includes service info, where he settled, who he married, his occupation, church affiliation, names of children, etc. Too much to post I should think. 2. The difference between Ft. Frederick and the Hessian Barracks at Frederick, Md. I didn't know the difference until I read this booklet, and entered "Hessian Barracks, Frederick, Md. on Google. 3. Sorry, no Schmeltz. Schmeiss (Johann) was the closest I found. I simply called the Pennsylvania German Society at (215) 581-1441 and ordered the book on the phone. The Publication is called Der Reggeboge (the rainbow) Volume 23/1989/2, Title: Prisoners of War in Frederick County, Maryland, During the American Revolution. Author: Lion G. Miles. Hope this answers the current questions. If not let me know and we'll keep trying. 3. Hi Jim! Sorry to say I didn't find a Jost (or Yost). Same for Beck, although there is a Christian Becker, and a Franz Becker. It's a small list (182) of men who stayed in the general area. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck in your search. Bill

    3. Everett : Cecked all listings under 'S' and unfortunately did not find any Spies or anything phonetically similar. Please remember the list is made up of men who lived in the general area long enough to be recorded somewhere, and there were only 182 listed. The book does give a number of locations where prisoners were kept. I wish you luck in your search. Bill

    2. Bill: How exciting that you have some Ft. Fredrick prisoner lists Could you tell my if my forbear Friedrich Spies, his brother Heinrich Spies, or a Valentin Spies were on that list. The two latter POW soldiers "disappeared" from all subsequent records. Thanks. Everett Spees

    3. John: Found your man in the book. Peter Herr, b. 1758/59 Eschwege. Private, Hessian Erbprinz Regt., Col. von Cochenhausen Co., deserted Aug. 1781. It says he was a tailor, bought lot no.198 in Hagerstown on 11 Mar 1789, was in the 1790 census for Washington Co., Hagerstown district. John Peter Herr naturalized 22 Nov.1797. John P. Herr in 1800 census - same area. John P. Herr residing in Smith Borough in 1820. In 1825, John Peter Herr and wife Susanna of Fairfield Co., OH, sell 1/2 of lot no.82 in Hagerstown. 1. Great results from German archive
    2. Fellow Hessian researchers: I just received a response to my request for information on the family of Johann Peter Herr of the Hesse-Kassel "Erbprinz" Regt. The Kassel Archive of the Reformed Church provided a record of the marriage of his parents, his birth and the baptism records of four younger siblings in Echewege-Altstadt's reformed church. The grandfathers were also identified as godfathers of two of the children. The results of 2 hours research cost 67.11 Euros or about $100. John M. Rhodes

I obtained a booklet from the Pennsylvania German Society (Box 397, Birdsboro, PA 19505) for $8.50, inc.S&H, which says about 1000 prisoners were held at the Fort between 1778 and 1781. However the barracks and other buildings in the town of Frederick held about 3000 men at different times from 1780 until the end of the war. More than half of these were Hessians. The 'Hessian Barracks' are still in existance, and is a museum. The booklet also contains a list of 182 former prisoners who settled in the area. ==== AMREV-HESSIANS Mailing List ==== Mail List archives are your best bet to find information,You can search the archives for a specific message or browse them, going from one message to another.
