    2. In a message dated 3/15/05 11:58:27 PM Eastern Standard Time, JeanShar40@aol.com writes: page 605 Mr. Downey came out of the Revoultion as a captain, having enlisted in his sixteenth year. He was one of the guard to escort to Frederick Town the Hessian prisoners captured by Washington at Trenton NJ. page 609 John Downey, the grandfather was born Aug 20, 1753 and died 26 September, 1825. He enlisted in the army at the beginning of the Revolution, and served throughout the entire war, coming out with the rank of captain. He was detailed with his company to guard the Hessian prisoners taken at Trenton and sent to Frederick. If he were born in l753 his 16th year would appear to be l760 or 1770. which would seem to be much earlier than the beginning of the revolution although those dates may be compatible? I am quite surprised that a 16 year old could rise to Captain in such a short time as that would seem to be a very high rank for the time. I suspect that was quite uncommon for the time but realize that there were almost no professional soldiers in the American side of the Revolutionary War. He must have been quite talented. Possibly the report of "His Company" did not mean that he was ranking officer in that company, but it seems to imply that. On a biography it could mean that he was just a member of that company and his rank came afterward. I am not sure of the rank of a Company ranking officer. Charles Severs

    2. Uh Oh. Given your info, I reread the Necrology of Frederick Co intro and it does not mean these folks died in Frederick Co MD. As soon as I saw the necrology list, I scimmed the list for individuals & did NOT read the entire introductory text, and only listed them as "Deaths of leading individuals" I apologize for not taking the time to read or type the entire intro. I never saw that he had a tombstone in any of the cemetery lists. I am interested to learn if the date of his death is correct, June 2, 1789 I am sorry for my mixup. Here is the full description: "Necrology of Frederick County [Maryland] since 1749 -" The following is a list of the deaths of leading individuals born or identified with Frederick County since 1749:" The "or identified with" is the clue I missed in skimming and the part I did not type in the full intro to the Necrology list. In another area of the book is the story of a soldier of the Revolution who guarded the Hessian prisoners. page 605 Mr. He was there in Md with my Conrad Luther's > brother Christian Luther. Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen (1716-1800) commanded the second division of Hessen-Cassel troops which arrived in New York in Nov 1776. The Regiment von Knyphausen was part of the first division of Hessen-Cassel troops. Although the titular Chef de Regiment, to the best of my knowledge, the Baron never served with the Regiment. After General Sir William Howe and Hessen-Cassel Lieut General von Heister had both returned to Europe from America, von Knyphausen was the second senior officer in North America, second only to Sir Henry Clinton. Was Baron von Knyphausen ever in Maryland? Probably, but just barely. In 1777 Howe's Army disembarked near Head of the Elk (now Elton, MD) and marched via Brandywine to Philadelphia. There was a bit of shooting at Brandywine and von Knyphausen commanded the division when went via Chadd's Ford. The Regiment von Knyphausen was one of the three Regiments having a major portion of its troops captured at Trenton on 26 Dec 1776. I can not recall that the Regiment von Knyphausen ever served in Maryland. Most of the time they were POWs. Those taken 26 Dec 1776 at Trenton were exchanged in July or August 1778. The two transports laden with members of the regiment were captured in Sept 1779 and most of these ended up in the New Philadelphia Jail and later Lancaster. Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen died at Cassel on 07 Dec 1800 at age 84 yrs 1 mo 3 days so I can't support the 1789 date given Bob Brooks

The earliest Hainline I find is a John or Jacob Hainline in Rowan County, NC in the 1790 census. Any help will be appreciated. KE

    3. Hi Bob, Good information...Thanks Your: The Regiment von Knyphausen was one of the three Regiments having a major portion of its troops captured at Trenton on 26 Dec 1776. This is where my Bonnsteins, Johann Jacob and Paulus enter the story. The Knyphausen Reg. fought in the battle of Trenton & both Paul and Jacob were captured Dec. 26th 1776. Because of lack of jails, prisoners were assigned to American farmers who were responsible for them. Many were sent to Lancaster, PA. [ Tanya my cousin has a copy of the Composition list of German and Waldeck prisoners of war, Paulus and Jacob are on it.] Paul was assigned to David Miller and Jacob to Richard Henry. The Bonstein men were listed on the Lancaster Exchange list & returned to the Knyphausen Reg. in 1778. "On the 4th of September, 1779, the Regiments von Knyphausen and von Lossberg received orders to make ready to embark with all their baggage, and with such of their sick as could support a journey. Their destination was Quebec, though the men did not know it at the time. The Knyphausen and Lossberg regiments were two of those which had been captured at Trenton. The prisoners taken on that occasion had been exchanged, and the regiments, which had at one time formed part of a combined battalion, were now acting independently again." The two regiments were embarked on the 8th of September on six vessels. Johann Jacob Bonstein was on the Triton. A very GOOD site about the triton and what happened to cause them to be recaptured is at: http://www.americanrevolution.org/hess20.html The Regiment von Knyphausen served in North America: Long Island, NY, 1776 White Plains, NY, 1776 Fort Washington, NY, 1776 Trenton, NJ, 1776 Brandywine, PA, 1777 Germantown, PA, 1777 Garrisoned Philadelphia, PA, 1777-1778 Monmouth, NJ, 1778 Garrisoned New York, NY, 1778-1780 Prince Edward Island & Canada, 1780-1781 Garrisoned New York, 1781-1783 Nelda Pax et bonum! First let me thank you for the tremendous service that you are providing. I am descended from Christopher Mantle (I have seen the last name also spelled Mantel, Montle, and Montel), He was a Hessian Soldier that eventually served in the Continental Troops. I have his service record but it only contains two Slips of paper. The first shows that Christopher Mantle enlisted on 16 Sept 1782 in Olivies (This could be Olivias) Company of Hazen's Regiment, Continental Troops. The second shows that He was discharged on 17 June 1783 at the close of the War. Neither of these documents states where he enlisted or where he was discharged. I have "heard" that he was captured at Yorktown but have also "heard" that he defected. Any information, help, or suggestions for finding information on him would be greatly appreciated. 2. Bob, Thanks for the information. I believe this Johann Georg Beck may be my best bet. My Great Grandfather Levi Beck was born in Chester County,Pa.,but I have not had much luck in finding out who his father was! The story in my family is that he was either the son or grandson of a Hessian soldier who was a deserter;furthermore, the christian names of John and George run in the family. I noticed that Johann Georg was being transported to New York, and this leads me to assume that he could have deserted in the Chester County,Pa.area. Do you know if there is any info in the AMREV-HESSIAN Archives concerning Dohla's journal? If so,then I will lookit up. Thanks again, Best regards, Jim
