Hi All I am new to this list, and just wondered how many soldiers brought their families with them? Apolonia ? married Thomas Baker b abt 1697 in North Kingstown, R.I. They moved north to Duchess County, N.Y. and settled on the "Beekman Patent". Children were born 1716- 172? I realize that this is quite a bit earlier than the civil war, but my research on her name, comes from either Belgium or Bavaria, area of Europe. Does anyone know where I can go to try and find her family name? Thanks for any help, Bonnie (Baker) Weber
Dear Hessian Listers, Thanks to a few members of this List, I was able to obtain this English translation. And what a time line it draws for my ancestor, Johann Henry HAMMER, of the von KNYPHAUSEN Regiment, Von BORCK Company. To paraphrase John T. Humphrey at the Genealogical Society of PA 2005 Annual meeting: "Details concerning what an ancestor may have done on any given day can be difficult if not impossible to find. But details concerning shared or common experience have been recorded and that information is useful in gaining insight into" the ancestor's life. This diary follows my ancestor, though no enlisted men are mentioned by name, throughout the entire Revolutionary War. What a trip that was for me. It included the trip over, the initial campaign, the capture at Trenton, the prisoner exchange, the storm in the North Atlantic on the way to Canada, where all the von KNYPHAUSEN Regiment was captured except those on the "Archer" (including Lt. RITTER), the two winters, the 1st at St. John's Island (being unable to reach Quebec the 1st winter of 7 months) and the 2nd at Quebec, and the return to NY, as well as the return to Germany (after my ancestor's desertion). We are talking less than two hundred men here with this shared experience, over a period of years from 1776 through 1783. I feel certain that with all this time together (except the capture at Trenton and prisoner time), that Lt. RITTER and my ancestor, John Henry HAMMER must have at least been acquainted. At least they did have many common experiences. Thank you Listers who helped me locate this translation, and for even making me aware of it. Officially, it is known as a part of the microfiche of G. K. Hall's "Hessian Documents in the American Revolution." The RITTER diary is document "P" in this collection, and is microfiche #'s 279 & 280. According to Fred Vickerson, a copy is available in Canada from the University of New Brunswick, Harriet Irving Library. I ordered my copy from the Carlisle Barracks (MHI Fund, AHEC, 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013). Not cheap (101 pages at 50 cents/page), but maybe the Fiche can be borrowed at a library on ILL? Hello Loretta; Remember our exchange of information back in 2001? At leat 10 messages in the mail list archives under 'MILLIS', Lots of information !!! And on top of it - just a year ago in April 2004 - here came an enquiry from Mrs. Louise Briggs coastkid917@aol.com which I unfortunately failed to follow up, but Louise Briggs rewarded us in Dec. 2004 with a lenghty report of her research. Hello everyone; We talked about this Hessian soldier on our mail list on 28.Sep. 2002. You can find him in our archives. Perhaps the archives contain even more information, but I remember that some of mine ended up with the S.A.R. Library in Louisvuille, Kentucky, as part of my 'Hessian soldier' donation. I just happened on this site while looking for Hesse-Kassel and discovered Johann Peter Sippel on the list of Hessians who decided to stay in America, after the war was over. I am also related to the famous Deborah Samson Gannett who dressed up as a man and fought with the Americans until she was wounded and found out by the physician. Does anyone know the background of Johann Sippel?

Click on <AMREV-HESSIANS-L-request@rootsweb.com> which if you are using most common e-mail software will open a new emaial addressed as above. Leave the subject line blank and in the text write only the word Subscribe and send the email. Notice that the e-address has the added tail "-request" after the list name. This funnels it to an automatic program which adds you as a subscriber. To end receiving programs, repete the same process but use the word: Unsubscribe I am pleased you have located your Jakob Hachenberger and apologize if my earlier email turned out to be a "red herring"; however, I associate German POWs at Lancaster PA with the POWs taken at Trenton. After the Trenton POWs were exchanged in 1778, I think of Lancaster as principally holding British POWs. Jakob Hachenberger was part of the Hesse-Hanau contingient. HETRINA VI covers the Hesse-Hanau troops was published later than the earlier volumes so I never obtained a copy. The account you give below just skims the surface of what Jakob Hachenberger actually encountered so you have a lot of reading to do. A few additions and corrections to the account below. First it wasn't March 5, 1775 that they reached Quebec, it was May 1776, usually May 6th is used but the convoy had to make its way through the ice in the river so anytime in the first 10 days of May is reasonable. They had departed Hanau on the mornin of 16 March 1776. In the campaign of 1775, the Americans had come up through the NY lakes and captured Montreal, tturn turne east towards the fortress at Quebec. In the meantime Arnold came over the hieight of the land from Maine to Quebec. The attack 31 Dec 1775 failed and the Americans lay siege to Quebec all winter. With the arrival of the warships and their convoys on 6 May, the Americans lifted the seige and began a withdrawal. In the meantime, the Amercan relief force was coming from the NY Lakes to join up. The two forces met at Trois Riviores on 8 June 1776 which fundamentally marked the end of the American campaign in Canada. Other listers can provide you recommended readings on this phase as I am not particularly knowedgeable on this campaign. As the Hesse-Hanau troops were with the Brunswick troops, the journals by Brunswickers should not be missed. After the Convention Army surrendered at Saratoga in Oct 1777, they were marched to Cambridge, Mass., to await (they supposed) transportation which would take them back to Europe. The Continental Congress never endorsed the Convention of surrender and using a minor infraction by the British, declared it invalid. Then in Nov 1778, the made a 7 day, 700 mile winter march from Cambridge MA to Charlottesville VA were they interred in the incomplete Albemarle Barracks. From Albemarle barracks at Charlottesvile, the POWs were move to Winchester VA whem Cornwallis' army moved into Virgina in 1781, then when Winchester was closed in early 1782, they went to Pensyslavania. I recommend you purchase a copy of the 2001 JSHA Journal. Of particular interest you will find: (pp.19-29) Gerhard K. Friesen, translator, "Anton Adolf Heinrich Du Roi's Diary of the Convention Army's March from Massachusetts to Virginia" (pp.30-40) Henry J. Retzer, translator, "Journal of the Hessen-Hanau Infantry Regiment Erbprinz kepot by Judge-Advocate Paul Wihelm Sxhaeffer -- March 1776 to April 1777, plus Letters to his Parents." (pp.40-42) Henry J. Retzer, translator, "Journal of the Hessen-Hanau Erbprinz Infantry Regiment -- June to August 1777 -- kept by Chaplain Philipp Theobald." John Merz put a lot on material in the AMREV-HESSIANS archives on the subject of the Albemarle barracks at Charlotteville and also on Winchester. You will find references to articles written by Lion G. Miles of which photocopies are available for purchase from the Winchester Library. Hi Bob Brook, I just recently signed up for web site. I read about it in the Sons of the Am. Revolution magazine (my husband is a member). Would you mind looking up my ancestor in on the list of prisoners held at Lancaster? His last name was Shotzberger and the family is not clear which brother, Christopher or Zachariah, was the Hessian. Christopher married and was buried in Snyder, Pa. The Hessian soldier according to family lore was held as a POW on a farm in Pennsylvania. Really appreciate your help and am really enjoying the web site. Thanks to John Merz. Hello Bob, I don't have my Hetrina Volumes anymore, gave them all up as you know, but our mal list archives do have quite a bit of interesting stuff, like this one from 2001. The Schwalm book and the list you quoted deal with the POWs from Trenton Christmas 1776, but here was Saratoga mentioned. I bet there is more to find in the archives. You see, those two Hesse-Hanau soldiers were captured at Saratoga, and in 1782 indentured themselves in Pennsylvania for 3 years. They are missing since, and I have not had any calls for them either. So what I did was to check with Rootsweb www.rootsweb.com and when the homepage came up, I entered Hachenberger and it did not respond. Then I entered Hockenberry, and the flood gates opened. I don't know how many familiy researchers are chasing information, but there are over 850 entries in the 'WorldConnect' system alone, hundreds of other postings in all categories, but it seems to me that there is utter confusion, and only once did I see a remark 'Hackenberg' as a possible German name. Please forgive me if this is a repeat-post, but I didn't see my earlier posting come through. I received this recently, ordered the kit, and thought others might be interested. The following is the text of the announcement: --- start of quote The Genographic Project has two main components. One is the collection and field analysis of DNA samples from more than 100,000 members of the last remaining indigenous populations on the planet -- compiling one of the largest DNA collections ever assembled. In addition, we're inviting members of the general public to take part by purchasing cheek swab kits and submitting their own DNA for analysis. Individuals will then receive customized genetic maps with specific details of the migratory paths followed by their own ancestors. --- end of quote If anyone is interested, visit: http://nationalgeographic.com/genographic Craig J. Karen, I am on the board of the JSHA and will forward your note on to the appropriate person. I am sorry there has been a delay for whatever the reason, but all of the boardmembers serve voluntary positions and sometimes things take longer than we would like. In any case, I'll make sure your message is passed on. Best, Carol
