In August 1783 all the Brunswick regiments returned home, shipped out from Quebec City. If Virginia DeMarce does not have him in her book (My Source #1) it is 99% certain that he has gone home as well. Clifford Neal Smith in his 'Brunswick Deserters' (my source #18) does not have him either. Hello Geraldine, thanks for your good wishes, I am trying to stay calm and collected and am looking forward to a great time. Well, SCHAEFER with one F or two is really a bummer - as bad as SChmidt and Mueller. In my 'Guide' I listed a few, and then I wrote "over twenty of these Schaefer's discharged in Canada alone, not even counting the one's discharged or deserted in the U.S.A. Your only help has to come from little details in American records for age, place of birth, possible relatives, friends and comrades who stuck with him. No use to look for in German military records before having some background. btw. I think the plaque is still available at http://www.crbronzeworks.com/hessian Last year I bought five of them at once and got a better deal. I am taking the last one with me to Germany, we found a worthy place for it and I will talk about on the list when I come back end of June. Cheers, and good luck to you on your search for your Hessian. John Helmut Merz, ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeri Schindler To: jmerz@cogeco.ca Sent: Monday, May 16, 2005 1:39 PM Subject: plaque photos Hello John, Since this message is one from a stranger to you, may I say by way of introduction-- My grandparents on both sides of my family were Germans. It is my father's gggrandfather, (George) Christian Schaeffer, who was the Hessian soldier in the Amer Rev War. There is confusion about just what happened to him One of his gggrandaughters wrote that he was taken prisoner at Trenton. But from information in Doehla's diary and Seidel's list of POWs who deserted or remained here, it appears that he didn't arrive until well after that battle. Bob Brooks says he was in Major von Stain's company in the Ansbach Regiment. But I haven't found any info on von Stain or troop movements of that company so far. And though it seems possible, I don't know whether he was actually in the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment. Perhaps there were Schaeffers from other units who stayed behind? I just don't know where to look. So be it. What I do know is that he was born in Germany in 1755 (where unknown), married in Philadelphia at the German Reformed Church in 1788, settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania (where he is buried), had 3 farms in that county (I've found some of the tax records for one), had 8 children (I have names and birthdates for all but one--my gggrandfather), and the same cousin who thought he was a POW at Trenton says he established a grist mill in PA (I have found no record of it to date). As a Johnny-come-lately (Hessian-descendant-come-lately?)--anyway new to the search for my recently discovered Hessian, I'd gladly put a plaque at his grave in Pennsylvania and send you a picture of it--if such plaques were still available! Sorry I can't do that, but I hope you have a wonderful and fruitful trip to Germany. I think you'll be welcomed as a German who has come back home. Sincerely, Jeri (Geraldine) Schindler Klamath Falls, Oregon
Dear Hessian descendants - This is a serious appeal! Saturday a week ago, a full page newspaper article appeared in the Hanau newspaper, with pictures of Hessian soldiers parading at historical events, and also a picture of myself holding a plaque before donating it to the Rose House Museum near Picton, Ontario last summer. I did donate one, the very first one, in 2002 to the Hanau Historical Society, which since has really stepped up their efforts to promote those events of the American Revolution. You may not be aware of, but the Prince of Hanau used the money he received from the British for his soldiers, very very wisely, and the buildings and park in Hanau-Wilhelmsbad are a very proud reminder of the 'Soldatenhandel'. The pride and joy of the citizens of Hanau. When the 'Sons of the American Revolution (S.A.R.) brought the article written by Howard F. Horne, former President-General, in their magazine of Winter 2005, and provided me with a few extra copies, I mailed one out to the reporter of the Hanauer Anzeiger, Herr Werner Kurz, and this must have been his inspiration to write this new article. This has put me on the spot - in the article it says that American descendants of Hessian soldiers designed this plaque to honor their ancestor, and that these plaques would be attched to the still existing grave stones of those Hessians. I do know that our designer and promoter Robert Fetters has done so with his ancestor, the Hessen- Kassel Soldier Henrich Hammer, of the Knyphausen Regiment, but who else has done a similar dedication. I know that many plaques have been ordered from the Bronzeworks, but I have not seen any pictures anywhere. Bob, I need yours again also. MAIL ME YOUR PICTURES - I need to show them in Hanau. I am leaving on the 14. June, get them to me before - PLEASE Mail to: John Helmut Merz, 703-350 Concession St., Hamilton, Ontario, Canada L9A 1B6 (this is the Zip code, do not forget) Please make my Day ! http://home.wtal.de/famfey/hallo_hessenland.htm

Patrick, please let me get at this once more - I followed my own advice and checked the list archives for your queries and the answers you received from the list administrator. I really did not see anything resembling a rebuff or being ignored. Your query on the other hand was kind of vague, you did not come with more than a name, no facts, times, and questions where to research, asking for help with the JSHA and their resources. Personally I would say, if you want help, you got to come with more information yourself. So why don't you tell us precisily everything you know about your Hessian named Yagre or Jaeger, and perhaps somewhere there is something about him. Trust me, it ain't that easy with a name like this. Cheers, John Helmut Merz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "john" <jmerz@cogeco.ca> Sent: Friday, May 13, 2005 4:49 PM > Patrick, > I am awfully sorry to hear that, but this is beyond my > control. Patrick, I am awfully sorry to hear that, but this is beyond my control. I gave up this list as administrator some time ago, and when you check the archives, you will find a different list administrator, who seems to set her own rules. I am retired and all my research stuff is gone to either a U.S.A. based depository (S.A.R.) or a Canadian one in Ameliasburg, Ontario. This means I am not in a position anymore to help, except to provide leads from memory. I would suggest you try again as I suggested, and if that does not work, start a new 'Hessian-Soldier' list with Rootsweb. Suzanne, to tell you the truth, there is nothing of substance in Clifford Neal Smith's Notes, and I would not spend a nickel on buying a copy, trust me. To search intelligently for a Hessian, you much better off to give us his full name, the place he first turned up, and all other little details like wife's name, children, will, how you found out about him, etc. Do this over this list, and you may have results! Don't overlook the list archives. A goldmine for Hessian research.
