Thank you Johnny and others who responded to my inquiry. Many of my family are late from Ft Wayne, Indiana where there is a Hessen Cassel nearby and, in fact a Hessen Cassel Road. When I was a small child I lived with my Koontz Grandmother and had many friends in the neighborhood and we were very active and mischievous. When calling us into the house my Grandmother would occasionally say "Get into this house you little Hessians". I'm not sure where she got the expression. She was French-Irish-German educated to only the sixth grade and I'm not sure she new the historical context of the phrase. Her husband was a descendant of the Palatines in Maryland and they, of course, had contact with the Hessians at Frederick. She was born in the 1880's and it would seem that any judgements relating to the Hessian activity in the Revolutionary War would have long passed. It could have carried over from her Pennsylvania German (Klinger) roots. Nonetheless, I never got the impression there was any prejudice or ill-will involved. I'm not asking a question here. Just rambling about Hessians. It's fascinating to me. Anyone interested in the Koontz lineage from Maryland feel free to contact me to see if we have in matches in the 17 and 1800's. ----- Original Message ----- From: "john" <jmerz@cogeco.ca> To: <AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2005 3:40 PM Subject: Re: [HESSIAN] JOHN N A BOGEN > Hello Al Ball and Hessian list subscribers; > since I haven't seen anybody responding as yet, although > anybody with access to Hetrina III could have done so, > and I myself gave all my research material away, so the only > thing I can rely on is my 'Guide', where on page 48 is a line: > > BOGEN, Nikolaus, K-2, S#133, D1-6/1783 N.Y., S#25 PA-Oaths. > > Btw. Take this suggestion with a grain of salt until you get word from a knowledgeable Hessian researcher/historian: Weithe, Johann, birthplace: Rostock, age: 35/05, discharged in Canada 1783. Hi Bob, In reference to this list, was the only reference where I would use the term Hessian, the "OUR" was not meant to really include the members of the list but the list its self. The list is a non enity, the list manager stands in as that enity.... Does that make sence? The list uses that term to define the difference between the American soldiers, the English soldiers and the German soldiers. this list is for the Hessian soldier. So thus Hessian is OUR term for the German soldier.... If this list was just a list for the pure term Hessian then we could not discuss any other German soldier. Again your wonderful explanitions, help even non historians, non purist and non generalist ... like me! I have no dificulity with learning from a purist or a generalist.. I'm sure each has some information that all of us can learn from. Sorry I wrote it in such a way that you thought it included you as in "OUR".... Nelda...LM Nelda L. Hi John White, Your: affirm in fact that Johannes was Hessian and not Brunswicker like Karl. Makes me think that possibly you believe that the term Hessian used on this list only means a German soldier that was a Hessian. Forgive me if I'm incorrect, but OUR term Hessian is used as a general naming for all German soldiers who served in any German unit in the Rev. War on the English side. So your Johannes in this cercumstances would be considered a Hessian, even though it was not his unit nor where he came from..... Nelda LM and not a Hessian researcher Nelda L. Dear Dordie; You are going about this 'unsubscribe' business the wrong way. But this is not what I want to discuss with you. Somehow your name sounded familiar, that's why I checked our mail list archives and found one posting in 2005 and one in 2003 with the name Lamphier mentioned. Mind you, it was not you who I found, you never ever posted anything to indicate that you were looking for something. In my humble opinion it is very unproductive to subscribe to a mail list, and sit back in the hopes that perhaps someone will come forward on their own with something of interest to you, in such a case you may have to wait til 'Kingdom come'. I found it offensive that you now complain about our traffic. Hello Hessians; I just returned from a visit to our Central Public Library, 55 York Boulevard, Hamilton, Ontario, and while snooping around the Special Collections floor, I was recognized by the Librarian, who told me that they have all my books in the Special Collection, that at times people from outside Hamilton are visiting and looking for them. Made me feel kind of good, and I am telling you this only, that if you are in the vicinity, you can search for your Hessian name in the books, and make photocopies of pages you need. These titles are available to look at, but are not on loan: He was a Hessian The Hessians of Nova Scotia The Hessians of Upper Canada The Hessians of Quebec Register of German Military Men who remained in Canada. Of course those titles are also in Ameliasburg, Ontario, and with the S.A.R. Library in Louisvile, Kentucky. Regards, John Helmut Merz. retired at the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario.
I've been following the recent dialogue regarding John Merz's trip and his desire for Hessian ancestral grave photos, etc. I have photos of headstones for my great grandfather, Solomon White, who was grandson of purported Hessian, Johannes Weiss (still trying to trace him), and Karl Haldermann, a Brunswicker, captured at Saratoga. No plaque yet -- would have to co-ordinate with the many other living descendents if I ever affirm in fact that Johannes was Hessian and not Brunswicker like Karl. I have briefly searched the Blue Grass/Straight Creek area of VA looking for ancestral graves but found nothing yet. John White Newcastle, WA
John, Not intentionally promoting Syylvie's website. Just that she offered to let me use it for my story. Your remarks are not always well taken by me. Ed http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Schilling.html
Dear Ed, and all other Hessian descendants; nothwithstanding 'Nelda's' Hellalujah to the well-known Schilling story, and your constant promotion of Sylvia's Hessian list, anything that tells the story of 'our' Hessians is welcome. By the way I do love Sylvia, I love her music too. Ask her! But words don't do the trick alone - we want our Hessians recognized by deeds, and by that I mean by some action by descendants, so the world knows about them, not just our mail list subscribers. That brings me around to your question - are the Hessian Soldier and Hessian Descendant Plaques still available. Yes! They are still available, I just heard it from the Bronzeworks. Their website is http://www.crbronzeworks.com/hessian/ and don't you worry, nobody is making any money or sales commissions when you buy direct. Long live the memory of our Hessian forefathers, and Peggy, you are a cousin of Emmi's, my wife, through the Westphal's. Hi LIst Members, What John Merz wrote to the member who unsubscribbed was offensive and I privately wrote to him about it. Flaming of any type is not acceptable on this list. When a member has a complaint about another member and what has been writen in an email the best recourse is to notify the List Manager, not respond to the email. Hi List Members, Earl just ordered a plaque, he was told he could get a reduction in price if there was an order for 10 at the same time and paid for in advance.... As you know discussing prices on this list is against the AUP rules. But what is needed is a person who would be willing to take charge of a multiple order and do it all off list! Please if anyone is interested in discussing this, write him and you all coordinate it all off list... There was quite a nice reduction in the price .... Hope you all will write each other about it off list..... his enmail addy is ehlippert@comcast.net Nelda L. Hi John, Gee, thanks for your approval of my Hellalujah to the well-known Schilling story, But, that story may not be as well known to the next person looking for information on that particular Schilling as you think. Buying a Plaque is not the only deed or action a person can take in making a memorial to thier Hessian. Researching and learning about them is just as important. Sharing your Hessian History on line as in a website will be actually seen by more people then visitors to a cemetery, not that, that is not a good way to recognise your ancestor... it is. We Bonsteins have been talking about it too.. On our Bonstein mailing list (which I created and run as another memorial to "OUR" Hessian) and privately... (we just have no place to put one...) Now taking pictures of that plaque and the tombstone and sharing that on your website, just think of how many people get to see that... well my memorial website has been visited by over 29,000 people just in a year and a half. Pretty good amount of people finding out about "OUR" Hessian I'd say... We have been putting descendant pictures with each person's entry as I get them, so everyone can see his descendants. We reciently got a picture of the Original home they lived in... and pictures of the church they were Baptisted in.... all on the website. Keep up the good work John... Nelda LM Nelda L. John, Do not despair about lack of photos of graves. So many TS's are deteriorated and some removed to make way for our modern highways, etc. I had been told on a phone conversation where Gottlieb Westfall was buried, but was unable to find it at the cemetery mentioned. I have no TS photos of any of Gottlieb Westfalls children, including my 3rd great grandmother. Her husband is buried at Smith's Graveyard in Perry Co., PA according to his obit. But I cannot find a location as to where this cem. might be today. I would think that Mary Elizabeth [Westfall] Light was buried at the same place as their deaths were only 2-3 years apart. I do have a tombstone photo of one of the sons of Mary and John Light....that of my great-great grandfather Simon Light. But I cannot add a plaque to the TS. I am trying to think how I might honor Gottlieb Westfall, but have as yet not come up with a good idea. The closes thing I have thought of is to have a drawing of Hessian soldier in uniform of his unit and hang that in my home where I have other family photos. I have recently been combing the census to try and find Gottleib's spouse who remarried. I have the name, but have found absolutely nothing about her. Once a a great while I hear from George Westfall of the same line. Maybe he has come up with a Westfall TS location. But have not heard from him in ages. I read all the other email on this topic. Seems many of us have not clue where there might be a TS. Pauli, you take good care of your grandfather (OPA) on this trip. Peggy [Lyte] Tyrrell, some kind of cousin.
