Does anyone know an address of the Hessian Archives Repository in Marburg where info on soldiers is located? My John Lutsey (or Luetze/Lutze/Lutzig) does not appear in Hetrina as I understand it. I thought I might pursue a different angle. I didn't find him in the Pension records books either under any similar spelling. He died in 1827; he received a bounty supposedly in ca.1783 in PA. Ironically, I spent a year at Phillips Universität in Marburg in 1971. I read the old script if I would need to. Any other suggestions appreciated. Edward Quinter

Burgoyne's books, titled "They also served", Women with the Hessian Auxiliaries, published 1999 by Heritage Books, Inc., page 41, I found the following note: "KLEINSCHMIDT. Ann, nee Townsend, (American) from Charleston, South Carolina, married Quartermaster Sergeant Friedrich Jacob Kleinschmidt of the Benning Regiment, on 6 December 1781 at Charleston. One would have to check Hetrina records of the Archives in Marburg about this soldier, whether he returned to Europe or remained in America. Cheers, John Merz, retired Hessian researcher.

Schneider Hessian Date: Mon, 04 Jul 2005 18:15:56 -0700 Dear Nelda, I have just been going over the information I and others have posted in the Archives. To persue this Hermann/Harmon G. Schneider, once more at this later date, just might shake someones memory. John had found only one Hermann Schneider who was listed in Hetrina I under #6897-98 and it says he was born 1753/54 at Frankenberg/Hessen and belonged to the Hesse Kassel Regiment von Huyn. He was listed on the rolls in May 1776 and as being present in Feb. 1783. Nothing was stated as to his status, no discharge,, no desertion or other date listed. Therefore from this source we do not know what happened to him. Harmon G. Schneider married Elizabeth Baumann 1781 in PA. His father was Mattheus Schneider. I would like to know more about the father Mattheus Schneider and family if possible and then maybe we could prove our descent from the above Harmon G. Schneider which so far is just family lore. Another, question, if married 1781 can Harmon Schneider still be present on the rolls Feb. 1783? Thank you and welcome home John. Fran Pennington Washington State
Just a last thought on the part of mine - these two Ansbach soldiers escaped both in the vicinity of the James River, Boettgen on the 31. May 1781 and Busch on the 7. Aug. 1781, and they sure knew each other. Boettgen deserted after some rather hard punishment he received for a previous desertion attempt. Can't really blame him, I would have done the same. Eh, Jimmy, my research files are at the S.A.R. Library in Louisville, KY, so I am just guessing - it's either the Ansbach soldier Christian Kaesebauer, or the Hesse-Kassel Regt. Rall soldier Martin Karsbach. Check the mail list archives for either of these names. Regards John Merz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bible, Jimmie L. Bob and Friends, Sounds like we are getting somewhere. I reviewed my notes on my forebear "Conrad Butt" and find that when I viewed his will in Pickaway Co, OH a few years ago, I noted that he was literate as he had signed his name clearly, Conrad Bott. That is a small leap to make to Konrad Boetten. For some reason the family has spelled the name Butt in this country. Butt isn't that far of Bött and Anglicizing the rest makes it believable. Comment? Thanks Bob & John!!!! Russ

Hello List, I am seeking information on a possible Hessian soldier. I have very little information on him. Family traditions says that the family came from a Hessian soldier. The name is Carbaugh today, but suppossly it was spelled with a "K" during the revolutionary war, so it would have been Karbaugh or Kerbaugh with no known first name. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Jimmy Bible

Städtler lists: Boetten, Konrad, Gemeiner. A III. Des. 31. 5. 81. "A III" is Städtler's unit code for the company commanded by "Stain" whom Städtler omits from his lists. Von Eelking identifies him as "Heinrich Carl Friedrich von Stein [zum Reitzenstein]" with rank of Captain from 09 Feb 1777; i.e., he was promoted to Captain for the expedition to America. A cursory scan of the dates of desertion on Städtler's list did not reveal another desertion on that date. Bob Brooks

The last e-mail was scrambled up and confusing. So I copied and pasted it again. Bob Zins July 3, 2005 Indiana ancestors Vicktoria Hizer Following the Revolutionary War, thousands of British soldiers and German mercenaries who fought for the British remained in the United States and in Canada. They were classified as being discharged, captured as prisoners of war or as deserters. Author Clifford Neal Smith has become an authority on identifying immigrants of German origin. His work identifies thousands of individuals taken from the muster rolls in the British Record Office and the War Office. "British and German Deserters, Dischargees and Prisoners of War Who May Have Remained in Canada and the United States, 1774-1783 Part I and Part 2 and Deserters and Disbanded Soldiers From British, German and Loyalist Military Units in the South, 1782" is arranged by regiments and thereunder alphabetically by surnames. With each soldier's name is his status as a deserter, dischargee or prisoner of war. The date of action is included. Smith's further research indicates that dischargees, prisoners of war and deserters usually settled within a few miles of where their unit was stationed, captured or discharged. This book costs $19.50 plus $4 shipping. Libraries and institutions get a 10 percent discount. Order from Clearfield Co., 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Suite 260, Baltimore, MD 21211. Hi List, Hi, What you are subscribed to is a mailing list. A mailing list is a group of people researching the same surname/ subject / or area of land, as the list's name. The email you send to the list goes out individually to each member of the list (including a copy back to you) from the server. We should email to the list address with who we are, whom / what we are trying to find and or what we would like to share with others. If like myself you have lots to offer then you state what you have and are willing to share. If you read an email that you can help with, then answer that email. Directly if you want to, but I ask that it be sent to the list so that all may share the information. (a copy is also stored in the archives.) If you find a website or anything that may help another member then send part of the info and the URL to the mailing list. When answering by reply to an email keep that subject in the subject line, but delete most of the first message so that it doesn't take up so much room. This keeps the messages together in the archives and uses less memory space. Change subject line when the body of the subject changes. Use subject lines accurately, in other words not just Help/need info but, a precise name and dates and place if you have it. A descriptive subject is much more likely to get a response as old timers sometimes wont read all emails and go by subject lines only. As long as the conversations between members of the list are about genealogy type things then by all means keep it on the list. But, if it is a private message, jokes..ect. then send it to the members private email address, not the list. List subjects should be kept on tract. When someone helps you, either privately or on the list let them know how much that help meant to you. Some times you can even let everybody know how helpful this person is by letting the list know. All of us need to be appreciated publicly once in a while. If you are offended by what someone has to say then still be courteous about your answer. Do not Flame anyone.. If you have a problem then bring it to the list's admin privately, for that is one of the jobs an administrator is supposed to do, be a moderator. The Administrator has the finale word about anything, except rootsweb.com policy which none will violate including the administrator. Even though we do not personally know each other, we are members of the same family, even if there is no connection by surname. For we are members of the family of genealogist, and it is by helping each other that we will keep our free study of our many varied histories. Also one other thing, before you send an email of someone elses to another party (person) have their permission. Rootsweb.com wants all of us to obey the copyright laws.. Items of concern for me the list manager Which will get you removed from the mailing list: These two items will get you removed or moderated. 1. Please remember that your use of RootsWeb's resources implicitly signifies agreement with RootsWeb's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Please read our usage policy at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html. If you do not agree with these conditions, you must not use RootsWeb's resources. 2. Flaming other people via an email and the list. Items that will get you a message from me: 3. Please do not send VIRUS WARNINGS TO THE LIST.... SEND THEM TO ME... I will investigate and warn the list when/if needed. 4. Before... Sending an email that discusses something like you just finished your book on such and such subject and it is now available for sale the price and anything like that talk to me off list!! I will get back to you with-in 24 hours... ITEMS of exception: You may bring to the list's attention relevant items of interest you found listed at an online auction site or other resource. "In all such exceptions prices will be taken up privately between the parties involved, not on the list." I hope this explains what a mailing list is, what it is for and how to use it. John, Karen & Russ -- I do not find a Leonhardt Baugh, Bach, etc. in Städtler's list of Ansbach-Bayreuth Soldiers. Also, I do not see a Conrad Butts. In fact, there are no soldiers named Baugh or Butt found in Städtler on any of his three lists (returned, dead, remained). Städtler lists: Busch, Leonard, Gemeiner. A II. Des. 7. 8. 81. A check of Döhla or anothers journal would place the regiment on 07 Aug 1781 but from memory, they would have been somewhere in the vicinity of Jamestown. The "wanted list" in an 1802 issue of the *Bayreuther Zeitung* (sp?) lists "der Mousq[uetier]. Leonhardt Busch, aus Wallhausen" indicated he had hereditary property in Germany (and probably in Wallhausen). On MapQuest, http://www.mapquest.com/maps/main.adp?country=DE I find four Wallhausens but I can not identify any with either Bayreuth or Ansbach. Wallhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Konstanz, DE Wallhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Schwäbisch Hall, DE Wallhausen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Bad Kreuznach, DE Wallhausen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Sangerhausen, DE I can't get from "Busch" to "Baugh" but the only other Leonard [or Leonhardt] B___'s on Städtler's list of those who remained in America were: Battle, Leonard, Jäger. J II. Des. 9. 4. 83 in Virginien. Baumgärtell, Leonhardt, Gemeiner. B II. Des. 2. 10. 82. Buttler, Leonhard, Jäger. J II. Dezember 1782.
