I've typed out all of the information I can get from the postcards but I don't think it would be right to post such a long note on the bulletin board. As for selling them, you could have the whole batch (10) for almost nothing, just enough to cover postage. As for Lucius being a minister, maybe I'm wrong, but someone wrote on the back of one of these postcards, in a handwriting that matches that of Lucius, "Thought you might like to see your minister so here he is."

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1h.2ADIB/164 Message Board Post: I bought a small packet of postcards at a flea market, and the set includes some picture postcards which show a Rev. Lucius E. Ammidown, apparently a Baptist minister, in Massachussetts. There are also some postcards from Ammidown and others to a Philip A. Marsell, who apparently boarded with Rev. & Mrs. Ammidown while attending Worcester Polytech. Institute, Worcester, Mass., ca 1909-1910.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1h.2ADIB/162.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Alton, Yes, it is a self test. The company I first found is called Family Tree DNA, one of the more popular ones. There are several tests, but for the paternal line (Y-DNA) the decision is how many markers. The tests are 12, 25, and 37 markers for $159, $229, $289. The more markers two people have in common, the closer the estimated common ancestor can be identified. So for instance if you and I ordered the 12 marker test and all 12 matched, we could say that our closest relative was within about 14 generations. With 25 matches we could say we are within 7 generations. And 37 markers would give us 5 generations. The other test line is mtDNA, which is a maternal line. This tests female to female (instead of the more surname oriented male to male) lineage. As males, we carry that information, but don't pass it on (unlike our sisters who would). This will also allow you tap into the "Eve 's Daughters" database. There are similar refinements as the Y-DNA testing. Adding the mtDNA will again add money. Sticker shock? What do you think? Chris

    1. AMIDONs in Virginia
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: AMIDON, HALL, CANADA, KEYS, LYNN, HUTCHINSON, BRAWNER, SLINGERLAND Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1h.2ADIB/163.1.1 Message Board Post: All the AMIDONs in Virginia of whom I know are descendants of Daniel Irving Amidon and his wife Rhoda Hall. I have seen online that Daniel was a son of Jacob Amidon (born 1796 in Willington, Connecticut) and his wife Phebe CANADA. Daniel moved to Prince William County, Virginia, some time between 1846 and 1858. This was a heck of a time to move there, as the Civil War was about to happen there (e.g. 2 battles at Manassas/Bull Run). The 1860 census of Prince William County lists Daniel Amidon (38) as a farmer. He has $2500 in real property and $835 in personal property. Rhoda Amidon also is 38. Jacob J. Amidon (17) and James M. Amidon (13) were born in New York, but the baby, Daniel Amidon (2), was born in Virginia. Jacob is a farm laborer. Their post office address is Evansport, Virginia (Series M653, Roll 1373, page 507, household 565). The LDS transcription of the 1880 census of Prince William County lists Danl. Amrdon [sic] (58) as a farmer in Dumfries. His wife Roda (58) is keeping house. Both Daniel and Rhoda were born in New York to parents born in Connecticut. The sons living with them are Jacob (36, married), James (31, single), and Daniel (22, single). They are all laborers. Jacob and James were born in New York, while Daniel was born in Virginia (p. 89C). The 1900 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists James M. Amidon (52, born in October 1847) as a farmer in the Rock Hill District. He is a widower. He was born in New York, as were his parents. He owns, free of mortgage, the farm numbered 27 in the farm schedule. His father, Daniel Amidon (79), was born in March 1821 to a father born in Connecticut and a mother born in New York. James' mother, Rhoda (79), was born in October 1820 to a father born in Connecticut and a mother born in New York (or so the census says). Daniel and Rhoda have been married for 58 years. Also in the household are 7 children of James M. Amidon: Rhoda J. Amidon (18, born in September 1881, attending school); Jesse (15, born in March 1885, in school); Maud (13, born in October 1886, in school); James (11, born in February 1889, in school); Leila (9, born in December 1890); Hannah (7, born in November 1892), and Milton (4, born in August 1895). All of the children are listed as born in Virgin! ia to a father born in New York and a mother born in Virginia. All of them over the age of 10 are listed as able to read, write, and speak English (Series T623, Roll 1729, Enumeration District 90, sheet 2A, page 70A, household 29; transcription by Laura Keyes Perry). Jacob "Jay" Amidon married more than once but seems not to have had any children. Daniel Irving Amidon, Jr. married Emily "Emma" Nora Keys and was the father of Annie and Magruder (twins who died at birth), Phoebe Kate, Joseph, Annie (m. Andrew LYNN), Climenia (m. HUTCHINSON and Philip BRAWNER), Alma (m. SLINGERLAND), and Daniel Dewey Amidon.

Surnames: Hagan, Amidon Classification: Military Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1h.2ADIB/163 Message Board Post: An article in the Washington Post of 8 October 1918 is headed "Corp. J. F. HAGAN Killed; 3 Other D.C. Men Wounded." It says this: "The current casualty lists contain the names of four Washington men—one killed in action and three severely wounded. [...] "Badly wounded by shrapnel, James W. AMIDON, of 138 Sixth street northeast, a sergeant in the 320th machine gun battalion, was the fourth Washington man’s name to appear in two days. Born in Dumfries, Va., where he spent his childhood, AMIDON is 28 years old. Before being drafted he was employed as brakeman on the Pennsylvania railroad." Transcription found online at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~oldnewspapers/2wash_post_vitals_10_8_18.htm. Dumfries is in Prince William County, Virginia. I THINK this man was the son of James Madison Amidon, who was in Stafford County, Virginia, in 1900, with a son James who was born in February 1889.

There are several variants of the test. Has anyone else expolored this option? Is anyone else interested in doing this for the Am*d*n line? One obvious benefit would be to validate Roger's lines in the US. Likewise, any foreign connections could be tested (such as the Amadon family in France). Thoughts? Ideas? Cousin Chris
