The increase reflects the deployment of Burgoyne's army to succor Quebec (British, Brunswick, and Hesse-Hanau troops), the deployment for Clinton's army (British troops from Ireland) to Cape Fear as the jumping-off point for the ill-fated attempt to capture Charlestown (now Charleston SC) and the two divisions of Hessians (Hesse-Cassel and Waldeck) sent to reinforce New York.
