    3. Oops! A typo: >>> in 1775, they were 11,219; in 1776, they increased to 46,8865; <<< The correct number for 1776 is 45,865 and would reflect an end-of-the-year accounting. The increase reflects the deployment of Burgoyne's army to succor Quebec (British, Brunswick, and Hesse-Hanau troops), the deployment for Clinton's army (British troops from Ireland) to Cape Fear as the jumping-off point for the ill-fated attempt to capture Charlestown (now Charleston SC) and the two divisions of Hessians (Hesse-Cassel and Waldeck) sent to reinforce New York.
