<< maybe the goal was to push the front line of this war as far north as possible to prevent further damage >> Pamela, You may be right about this, but knowing the way a lot of SC people feel even to this day, I'd be willing to bet that the reason they were among the first to arrive in VA was probably so they could get at the enemy! They were raring to go, and having taken control of the federal facilities in their state, the next best chance of getting into the fray was to head north where the war was just starting to heat up and the enemy was accessible.
