If he matches with what you know, it is easy and inexpensive to write for a copy of the membership application(s) that should have evidence for this data as well as for his service. If his record is currently flagged as erroneously attributed, then you will need to dig in records available locally and possibly in the National Archives to prove that Service 'X' matches with person 'Y'. If you don't have this information on 'your' Jeremiah, you'll want to do the standard genealogical work in land and estate records, tax lists, etc., as available wherever you believed him to be at a given time, beginning with what you already have proved.
