William Henderson: Robert Kinkade, John Howe, and Peter Kerlin. I transcribed from microfilm at the National Archives, the following 1820 RW pension application of Robert Kinkade, 1742-1832---my gr-gr-gr-grandfather. He served in a number of important battles of the Revolutionary War, and he is mentioned several times in the book "The First Virginia Regiment of Foot, 1775-1783", by M. Lee Minnis. In this book, his name is spelled "Kincaid". Because he mentioned service under Capt. George Gibson, he may also have been in Dunmore's War at Ft. Pitt in 1774/1775. ************************ State of Kentucky Hardin Circuit Ct June Term 1820 Ordered that the following declaration, affadavit, and schedule be admitted to record having been sworn to in open court. Original Claim District of Kentucky Hardin Circuit Is on this 16th day of June 1820 personally app.= and in open court being a court of record for the county and district aforesaid Robert Kinkade aged seventy eight years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of congress of the 18th day of March 1818 and the 1st day of May 1820. That he the said Robert Kinkade enlisted first for the term of one year under Captain George Gibson and joined the first virginia regiment. Then I enlisted for three years under Captain Samuel Crump in Read's regiment. I was detached into Col. Daniel Morgan's rifle Corps in the year 1777 in the state of Virginia and was also detached out of that company into Captain Gabriel Long's company and served in that company until I was discharged which was about august 1779. Then at Genl George Washington's request I took command of a small party to scout on the line! the York state at Fort Montgomery when he was discharged from the said service in 1779 in the state of new Jersey by Peter Mecklenburgh Brigadier General. In the year 1780 I went to sea on board of the state ship Hyderally commanded by Joshua Barney. I was out with commodore Barney until peace was concluded and that he was in the Battles of the first war at the taking of the hessians at Trenton new Jersey then at princeton then at Piscatanay then at the taking of Burgoyne then at the taking of stony point then at Paulus Hook under Colonel Henry Lee. And that he has no other proof except the affadavit of John Howe and Peter Kerlin as follows to wit October 9th 1819 we do hereby certify that sergeant Robert Kinkade now before us is the same we knew and scouted with in Colonel Daniel Morgan's Rifle regiment in the continental Army in the revolutionary wars which regiment was made up out of the states of Pennsylvania and Virginia. The said Kinkade was drafted into William Henderson's company afterwards into Gabriel Long's Company. In said corps he being enlisted for three years during the time of our knowledge with him which was from the spring seventy seven until the year seventy nine we believe was regularly discharged by General Peter Mecklenburg . During the time in acquaintance with him we can say he behaved himself as an orderly obedient good soldier and deserves the countenance(?) of his country. Given from under our hands this day and year above written. John Howe, sergeant major in the same regiment Peter Kerlin his mark Commonwealth of Kentucky Jefferson County Court This day the above named John Howe and Peter Kerlin made oath before the undersigned a justice of the peace in and for the county of name that this foregoing statement relating to the services of sergeant Robt Kinkade is true to the best of their recollection and belief. Given under my hand and seal in the County aforesaid this 9th day of October 1819.
