    3. Speaking of which. . . . I'm still looking for the men from the VA militia referred to as the Virginia Volunteers, who volunteered to go with Col. Henry Bouquet in his expedition of 1764. Since they preceded the Revolution, it's hard to find info about them. . Goal was to free the prisoners held by the Indians and to forge some sort of peace treaty. Because of state law at the time, it was not possible for the governor nor the counties to sent the militia out of state, but when word got out that Bouquet was in need of help, many VA militia men volunteered, many of whom had relatives captured and held by the Shawnee and other tribes. After the prisoners were rescued, they were brought to Ft. Pitt and then escorted home. In early 1765, Col. Bouquet attempted to get the VA government to at least reimburse these militiamen for their time, but according to what I've learned so far, little came of it, although a few were rewarded with small land grants (50 acres.) Any help or suggestions most welcomed. I know little other than what is in "Devil of a Whipping" which recounts a unit of the Rockbridge Volunteers marching from Virginia to SC to fight in the Battle of Cowpens. Wanted to ask Peg: Could you explain your question re. the Rockbridge men in the Revolution? Was it in response to a recent posting? There were several rather famous battles that Rockbridge Co. men took part in, but I suspect you may be referring to a particular group mentioned in mail to this list that I overlooked.
