I am concerned about the 3rd VA Regiment during the Rev. War. Gwathmey states that Sergeant Jacob SMOCK had service with the 3rd and 4th VA Regiments. I can find Sgt. Jacob SMOCK in the 8th VA at Valley Forge (Dec 1777-June 1778). Since the 8th was merged into the 4th VA in Sep 1778, it is logical that Jacob SMOCK serve in the 4th VA. Sgt. Jacob SMOCK with 3 years service in the VA Continental Line received Military Warrant #1022 for 200 acres which he registered in 1783, but never surveyed or patented. He was killed by Indians at Crab Orchard, KY soon after 1784 (last tax year in Hampshire Co., VA) while returning to VA from KY. What I cannot find is any reference of his service with the 3rd VA as stated by Gwathmey. Any suggestions as to sources to be explored? Best regards, Hugh
