They are from the DAR's Genealogical Records Committee National Index, which is online. These references are not related to the Patriot Index or to Revolutionary War service. The GRC reports, which this index provides access to, are typescript volumes containing Bible and cemetery records along with many other types of sources from many time periods. The DAR has been compiling them since the 1910s, and there are now over 18,000 of these volumes in our library. The index is a work-in-progress and new entries are added frequently as we receive new indexes from the volunteer members who are performing this valuable work. Also, that reference to "AK" is indeed to an Alaska volume, not an Arkansas one. We are careful to use the correct postal codes for entries in our index. The book in question was prepared by a member in Alaska but the contents of it are Chatham County, North Carolina court records from 1843. The book is shelved in our North Carolina section. This illustrates one of the main reasons for the indexing project -- materials on one state may appear in volumes compiled by DAR members from another state. In the near future we plan to have the index references linked to the cataloging record of the book, so researchers will be able to identify the exact volume referenced by the index. In the DAR Library's portion of the DAR website (www.dar.org) one finds the link to the GRC National Index on the left side. On the same page as the index search screen is a link to "GRC Index Overview," which explains what this index is. It also explains how to get copies of the pages referred to through our Search Service. The information and order form for the Search Service may be obtained by scrolling to the end of the "Overview" and clicking on the link. In the next few years we hope to scan the text of these volumes and link them to the online index in some way, but that is not imminent or completely planned out. Consequently, short of visiting our library in Washington, D.C., the only way to obtain copies is through our Search Service or by hiring a private researcher. The DAR Patriot Index is not available online. The latest printed version of the index is 2003, three red volumes. ALL EARLIER EDITIONS SHOULD BE THROWN AWAY!!! [not shouting; just emphasizing]. In lieu of an online version of the index, the DAR offers a free online Patriot Index look-up service. On our website, www.dar.org, click on the word "Membership" in the middle of the page. On the right side of the next page is "DAR Patriot Lookup Service." Volunteer members will check names and send a reply shortly after receipt. I have checked the 2003 version of the index and there are no Mhoon entries; they've probably been merged with Moon because of the similarities of pronunciation and spelling. I should add that the Patriot Index is not a listing of all participants on the American side during the Revolutionary War, just those whose descendants in the DAR have established them in our records. Absence from the Patriot Index does not necessarily mean, therefore, that a person was not a soldier, sailor, patriot, etc. The DAR is making major strides at the present time to make more information available to researchers through our webpage. I hope this information will help everyone understand what is and isn't available on it. More is on the way as our project develops over the next few years. Eric G.
