The Historical Register of Virginians in the American Revolution, 1938, by John H. Gwathmey, gives Jacob SMOCK's service as private in the 3rd and 4th regiments Va. Continental Line and sergeant in the 4th, 8th and 12th regiments, Va. Continental Line. I have found Jacob SMOCK in the Valley Forge rolls as Jacob SMOCK, Sgt., 8th VA, Capt. Higgins' Co., thus verifying some of his service. Also there is evidence that he received a 200 acre Military Warrant (#1022) for 3 years service as a sergeant in the VA Continental Line. The history of the 8th VA shows that the Regiment was consolidated with the 4th and 12th VA upon leaving Valley Forge in June 1778 and merged into the 4th VA in Sep 1778. >From the above it is obvious that the Jacob's' service involved association with the 4th, 8th, and 12th VA. I have not been able to find evidence of service in the 3rd VA Regiment. Could this be an error? If not, where did Gwathmey get his information? Best, Hugh
