David, Here's the best I can offer, and I offer it antecdotally. I had a relative in the 10th NC Line Regiment in the Continental Army. However, he didn't join until the last 3 years of the war. Scholors say that the 10th was dissolved by then. Near as I can *guess, *some units kept their own names, even though they were officially mixed into other Regiments. I have uncovered evidence, however, that seems to indicate that Thomas Gaskins Virginia Regiment of 1781 was designated the 14th. I have posed this question to the right people at the Virginia State Archives and they don't know either.
