I am researching my grandparents line and I think I have found a relative that served in the American-Revolutiary War. Is there anyway I can check this out. His name was Capt. William Brinkley and he was commissioned to Captain April 16,1776 of the N.C. Troup of the Continental Line of the of the 3rd. Regiment. I would greatly appreciate it. I don't know how to list it on your rootsweb site. Thank you so much for your help. Kathy Bailey, Jacksonville, NC e-mail [email protected]

Kathy, Is it possible that your William is the one listed below that had a will probated in 1796? Just FYI, there were degrees of Revolutionary pensioners: invalid soldiers passed pensions 1776; half pay pensioners (if served longer they would receive half pay for life) passed 1778, widows and orphan pensions 1780; the first pension act for "service in the Rev War" was passed in 1818, but because of fraud, a stricter pension act was passed in 1832. So...the William listed below did not live long enough to obtain or apply for a pension. It sounds like his heirs did so in his name but were denied. This William might have been receiving a "half pay." That would explain not pension record being found. I found these situations on the internet by typing in "William Brinkley" + war, and with advanced search added the word revolutionary. These all need to be verified, but one does list Gladys EARLY VIRGINIA (Nansemond Area) AND NORTH CAROLINA BRINKLEY NOTES (1600s & 1700s) Jan,1998. Leanne Dooley, [email protected] 1796 Halifax Co, NC Wm Brinkley leaves will mentioning, Hunt, Charity, Wm. Brinkley, Robert, Sarah, and Polly (this Wm is later known in a pension appl to have been a Capt in Rev War and his heirs tried to get a land warrant. Rejected) 1797 Halifax Co, NC Will of William Brinkley mentions William, Abraham and Tabitha http://members.tripod.com/~tawshasgenealogy/timelinea.html THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO THE STATE 0F NO. Captain William Brinkley This list is from the North Carolina Archives Treasurers and Comptrollers Papers, Revolutionary Army Accounts S.115.59 Vol. VIII P. 21, f. 1 The list gives the amount paid in pounds, shillings, and pence, but I could not follow this.
