Those who have joined DAR in the past have established all the ancestors in the Patriot Index. That certainly honors the ancestor by registering their name and service and making that information available to others. I am very thankful for all those researchers who have recorded the information so I (and others) don't have to "reinvent the wheel" to find it. By joining DAR or SAR and establishing your lineage to the patriot, that person also makes it possible for their children, grandchildren, cousins, etc. to join on the same line. If someone's ancestor is in the DAR Patriot Index, someone has joined on that ancestor and provided evidence of his/her service. There are also many new ancestors added every year. Establishing descent from some one who "aided the cause of American independence" is only the ticket to get into DAR, SAR, etc. The purpose of DAR, SAR, etc. is not ancestor worship, etc. DAR, SAR, etc. are service organizations. The purpose of DAR, SAR, etc. is not to sit around and talk about what grandpa did in the war. The purposes are educational, historical and patriotic. There are many who join these organizations who have no interest in genealogy and did not do the research for their application. Many join on lines established by their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc. to carry on the family tradition. As with me, it made my grandmother very proud. After I got in, I leaned all the wonderful things that DAR does. I'll get off my soapbox now, Phyllis

    2. I'm new to this list, and was surprised at how much mail has to do with DAR, and how many of the posters are members. This discussion has been interesting, and as a newby, at first I resisted joining in, but must speak up and share my own experience with DAR. I, too, filled out their online form to inquire about an ancestor, and the only information I got back amounted to, "Yes. He's registered. Would you like to join DAR?" There was no offer to share any other information. Not to be deterred, I then went to ancestry.com to see what they had in their DAR volumns. I could find members listed, but no history of the Rev. War Vets. Just how do they honor their own Rev. War Vet if they keep them so well hidden? Do they really believe that they're honoring someone by putting their name in an index? I suggest the telphone book at least makes those listed accessible.
