In response to this in Joanne's message: "NOTE: She does NOT do my research for me, but does clarify what is needed, e.g. I had hoped my dad's birth certificate naming and signed by his mother would suffice for her "birth" record, but was told no. I should try to find her certificate and her marriage certificate." Technically the person who told you this is correct. The DAR loves it when every step of the ancestry is documented with birth, marriage, death certificates, but often this just isn't available. At those times, other documentation will work. Bible records, school records, documents signed by a parent, for example. It's no wonder ladies are afraid to try to join the DAR; unfortunately, some chapters and members make it sound so much more complicated than it really is. Our regent and registrar help with research, the applications (the application form is on-line and available to members so it's easy to help prospects by filling out their applications for them). I hope the bickering and sniping on this site does not discourage ladies from joining. It is a very worthwhile organization that works hard to help veterans, children, schools, & patriotic endeavors. Our chapter has fun and welcomes new members; we have more than 20 new members/applicants right now, and it isn't "your grandma's DAR" in our chapter.
