    3. Terri, I had sent a query to DAR re. a RWV, and with the response, was info about joining DAR. I think I just clicked on a link and then filled out some online form. Here's part of the email I got back: Your information is being added to our database. The State Membership Chairman in your state is also being contacted. She will notify a local chapter, who will contact you. Chapters meet once a month, September thru May, so please allow up to two months for chapter contact. Your reference number is: xxxxxxx Thank you for your interest, Membership Information Department, NSDAR ProspectiveMembers@dar.org Within a very short time, I got an email from the DAR State Membership Chairperson for Arizona, who sent a lovely letter explaining it was her job to answer any questions and to find me a DAR chapter. A few days later, I was contacted by a woman from the Chapter closest to me. Her job, she said, was to sent me the membership application and answers all my questions. NOTE: She does NOT do my research for me, but does clarify what is needed, e.g. I had hoped my dad's birth certificate naming and signed by his mother would suffice for her "birth" record, but was told no. I should try to find her certificate and her marriage certificate. I have still not joined, nor made up my mind if I want to. As far as I know, one can join with or without a completed/accepted application. In my own case, the problems are not with my RWV ancestor --I have more than enough documentation to show his involvement in the Revolution, and an undisputable paper trail connecting him to my grandmother-- but trying to decide if I want to spend the time and $$$ to get all the more recent marriage, birth, death, etc. copies I need to send for. . . .Alas, so many ancestors, so many genealogy projects --I'm do volunteer research, teach genealogy, continue to do my own research etc.-- and what does DAR "acceptance" of my ancestor and me really mean? That someone approves my research? Documentation required by DAR are --for BOTH the direct line and spouse-- state certificates of birth, marriage and death as far back as they were available in the appropriate state, census, obituaries, wills, land records - just to name a few. Family genealogy books are only accepted if it is well documented AND if the book is at the DAR Library in DC (you can check their on-line catalogue at www.dar.org). Hope this helps. 3. Terri, I'm one of those people who helps with applications for my chapter. Most chapters have one or more people who are willing and able to help, including the registrar who prepares and submits the applications. There are also volunteers at state and national levels who will do lookups, etc. Have you contacted a chapter in your area? General information about membership can be found at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/content.cfm?id=92&hd=n&pf=n Chapter information is at http://www.dar.org/natsociety/chapters.cfm Good luck, Karen Sullivan -----Original Message----- From: american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Terri Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 10:47 PM To: american-revolution@rootsweb.com Subject: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] DAR Joanne - I'm VERY interested in your email about DAR Chapters supplying someone to help a person.
