David-- Don't feel badly, many people do not have any idea of what "certified genealogist --C.G.-- means, or why it may be of any importance. I'm sorry I even mentioned it, and sorrier still, that the word "certified" makes some people sad. Below are some links that will explain what the term means. I'm tempted to offer an explanation of why certification can be of importance, but will refrain; I've already caused enough of an uproar... and that was NOT my intention. --Joanne Definitions of Accredited, Certified, Professional genealogists, etc. http://genealogy.about.com/library/tips/blprofessional.htm Board for certification of genealogists- Mission: To foster public confidence in genealogy as a respected branch of history by promoting an attainable, uniform standard of competence and ethics among genealogical practitioners; and by publicly recognizing persons who meet that standard. http://www.bcgcertification.org/certification/index.html More information about certified genealogist organizations: http://www.apgen.org/resources/index.html David Reed <DaveReed@midmaine.com> wrote: What did I say to make you so sad? I had just never heard the term "Certified Genealogist" before, and wondered, is there really a Certification of Genealogy? And if so, what is it, and what is involved in becoming "Certified"? I'm sorry, didn't mean to make you sad. -David -----Original Message----- From: Karen Sullivan [mailto:ksullivan@hvc.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 11:49 AM To: DaveReed@midmaine.com; american-revolution@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] DAR and research I'm third generation DAR, am a chapter regent, have volunteered to help with applications, databases, etc. The DAR does not have a "certified genealogist" position, so I don't know where this is coming from. We have volunteer genealogists at chapter, state, and national levels, but we're not arrogant about it. We are always willing to help, no matter what level of expertise or experience an applicant may have. This attitude makes me so sad. And how does one become one, and what does it mean? -David -----snip----- I don't understand how anyone can claim to be teaching genealogy and not have their own family documents at hand. If one is a certified genealogist one must have documented at least 5 generations of a family line. [Me >] Tree Mother She lives a long way from Mississippi. "She is insane, of course.
