As a proud member of the DAR I am glad I have been able to research at least one ancestor and have him now on the rolls of known Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots. I have several more men that need recognition and as hard as it is to find documents in Mississippi where records are as scarce as raindrop in the Sahara Desert, I am hoping that the sand in my hourglass does not run out before I can complete the documentation for these unknown heroes of American Liberty. Membership in the DAR is not for me...it is for them. The DAR local chapters are pleased to review your documentation and let you know what you will need if anything to prove link in the family ancestry--birth, death, marriage. It is not the purpose of the DAR to do one's research. If you are having trouble with record resources talk to your local genealogy librarian or historical society. Read about the record archives in the states with which you are concerned. I don't understand how anyone can claim to be teaching genealogy and not have their own family documents at hand. If one is a certified genealogist one must have documented at least 5 generations of a family line. Tree Mother She lives a long way from Mississippi. "She is insane, of course. I'm sorry you feel obligated to judge my problems without knowing what they are, and I'm not sure why you need to know, but I think your lack of understanding says more about you than me. Have you never seen blanks in a family line? It just so happens that my "documental blanks" are in the generations between me and my grandmothers, not because I don't know who they are, but because of situations that make finding the proof very difficult. For reasons too complicated to explain here, more than one on-site visit to a distant courthouse will be required, and due to age and other difficulties, it is not easy for me to make that trip. Frankly, it's DAR members like you who make me hesitate to even consider it. Of course you should be proud to be a DAR member, and hopefully, you earned it yourself, and didn't stop there but continued to learn more about your family history. I am fortunate in not needing any help proving my RWV's participation, as all are well known and mentioned by people like George Washington and Gen. Nathaniel Greene. Three of them are mentioned in almost every history of the Revolution written about their home states. All left wills, bibles and land deeds. I know where they lived, who their neighbors were, and was fortunate enough to trace several old ancestral homes that are still standing. Nevertheless. smugness is not a trait I think in vogue, so I'll agree to stop sounding smug if you will. I'm third generation DAR, am a chapter regent, have volunteered to help with applications, databases, etc. The DAR does not have a "certified genealogist" position, so I don't know where this is coming from. We have volunteer genealogists at chapter, state, and national levels, but we're not arrogant about it. We are always willing to help, no matter what level of expertise or experience an applicant may have. This attitude makes me so sad.
