If anyone has ever gotten more from NARA via a $37 pension request than is contained on the Microfilm series M804, please speak up. So far, all the anecdotal evidence that I've gathered says the film has all that NARA sends, and you are not guaranteed getting everything on the film when you send in a request. If that is true, then the *only* way to do it is to buy/rent the film. [The film can be purchased for $25 + tax through http://www2.heritagequest.com/qsearch/sr1.asp?s=M804 members can rent for $3.50 or buy at a discount] I just went through a reel [my first look at Rev-war pensions] of JENNINGS [George-William]. A few things popped out at me after I got done indexing them. I have no idea if these JENNINGS folks were typical. Summary of Reel M804-1413 33 Names 6 are single page Land Bounty Warrant pointers- no info The remaining files average 34 pages each Largest file is 96pps - there is only one with less than 10 pps. Only about a third were applying from the same state that they enlisted in. Many went from CT to NY.[one gave all his addresses since the war which included a 15 yr move to NY before he went back to CT] A few went from southern states to KY or TN. Only a few name children; 11 name wives, 7 use maiden names. The earliest birthyear that I've sorted out yet is 1752-- the latest is 1765. [I haven't read the southern pensions, or a couple of the very difficult to read ones] This reminded me how sad it is that many of the older soldiers didn't survive long enough to get registered on film--- and that we need to remember the war lasted until 1783. This was encouraging enough that I'm going to order the preceding reel to follow up on the JENNINGS folks before George, who started this reel. I'm most interested in Justus JENNINGS whose file was only 11 pages long, but he was a deponent on one of the William JENNINGS pensions, and said more about his service while supporting his brother/cousin's claim than he did in his own application.
