When students of the 1700's America read about Irish participation in American history in the late 1700's and especially during the Revolutionary War period, they do not hear of the Irish merchant marine tradition and its contribution to the American Revolution. Yet historians, Michael J. O'Brien in particular, have gathered a great deal of information about Irish-American mariners before and at the time of the American Revolution.
