    3. I work for a documentary film company based in Toronto. We specialize in history/genealogy documentaries and are developing a series of films on historic American conflicts and the descendants of people involved. We have just completed a series here in Toronto for History Television Canada, which explores the history of certain conflicts within Canada, through the personal stories of the characters involved and their descendants. We followed the descendants embarking upon 'quests' to find out more about their ancestors and the historic event, which brought them into contact with other descendants of people similarly involved in that moment in time. The loose premise was that the meeting of descendants of two people who fought together/against each other might be able to answer certain questions about the events as a whole. The films were about oral histories, family stories and bringing the history to life, grounding it in the present day. Some of the conflicts we are hoping to pull interesting stories from and trace descendants for include the Revolutionary war and the Civil War. We are looking for poignant, personal stories perhaps with an element of mystery which could be presented as some sort of 'quest'. Anyone with any interest into a mysterious aspect of/question about their ancestor's involvement in the Revolutionary War please do get in touch! 3. Thank You Rebecca for sharing this information. What a wonderful idea and contribution you are making. Too bad we probably will never see your work here in Kentucky but maybe our Educational Television Network will pick it up one of these days. While I can think of only one story that has a Canadian - Kentucky connection I will pass it on. Colonel Bennett Young, who wrote and published the History of Jessamine County Kentucky, was a Civil War soldier who later became President of the Southern Railroad which is today "Norfolk Southern", the major railroad running from Cincinnati Ohio to New Orleans Louisiana. First, let me briefly give you some background on this person and then tie him to Canada. Bennett Henderson Young was born in Jessamine Co KY in 1843. He was educated at Bethel Academy in Jessamine County and Centre College in Danville KY. ( This area is in the Blue Grass region of KY in the East Central part of the Commonwealth 100 miles South of Cincinnati and 85 miles West of Louisville KY). He was studying to be a Presbyterian minister, but joined the Confederate Army ( South) under General Robert E Lee. Mr. Young rode with General John Hunt Morgan who is revered here in KY but was in fact a notorious raider fighting and foraging his way across the South and more resembling an outlaw and raider who fought his own war with little direction from the main Confederate Army. John Hunt Morgan and Bennett Young were captured in a raid up in Ohio but escaped with several of their comrades and went to Canada. From Canada they conceived the idea to use Canada as a base from which raids could be conducted into the Northern part of the U.S. In October 1864 Bennett Young commanded a raid from Canada to St. Albans Vermont by 20 escaped Confederates where they robbed three banks of more than $200,000.00. They returned to Canada and supposedly turned over the money to agents of the Confederate Army shortly before they were arrested by Canadian authorities. Canada, refused U.S. demands for extradition tried the raiders and found them not guilty. Bennett Young wrote a book about these exploitations entitled "Confederate Wizards of the Saddle". The St. Albans raid was the Northern most point of the actions during the Civil War or as we say here in the South "The War between the States'. After the Civil War Bennett Young finished his education in voluntary exile in Ireland and Scotland. In 1868 he set up a law practice in Louisville KY, where he championed the rights of the blacks and the poor whites. Young wrote other books such as Ancient Life in Kentucky as well as the 1898 history of Jessamine County Kentucky. There are still many Youngs who reside in this area although I do not know any of his descendents. I just thought this might be an interesting subject to you because of the Canada - Kentucky connection. Second,as far as other subjects I want to bring to your attention a genealogy interest of mine which also has a Canada connection and that is the role of the German soldiers who fought during the Revolutionary War. As you know many of the so called Hessians deserted the British Army and fled to Canada. Many of the soldiers were the subject of the late John Helmut Merz, a Canadian who wrote extensively and traced the ancestry of many of these Germans who settled in Canada. You can go on the rootsweb lists and find some of his work. Not only did these Hessians flee to Canada many of them settled in Pennsylvania and Maryland. One of my ancestors came from Schoningen Germany as a Hessian soldier (they were actually mercenaries) and fought for the British from 1776 to 1780 and then deserted and fought for the American army before moving to Hagerstown Maryland and eventually to Jessamine County Kentucky in 1800 where many of his ancestors still reside today. So, I will conclude with these two subjects and wish you well in your endeavors. Please keep me abreast of your efforts. 3. Hello, Speaking of mysteries; do you think it would be something worth while to try to trace my family from say --- me to my (so many great) grandfathers who fought in the Revolutionary War. I have searched untill I am almost beserk and I cannot find the one last connection which I need to become a Daughter of the American Revolution. Do you think that would be worth looking into? If so, any ideas that would help me? I have the paper work, except the record of that one ancestor. My line would go back from me to: 1-Hazel Webb Hollifield 2-Cora Ratliff Webb 3-Martha Ratliff Lanning 4-Govan Lanning 5-William Lanning 6-Enos Lanning 7-John Lanning (who fought in the war) The # 4-William is the one who I cannot find acceptable paper work on.
