Hi Rebecca, My ancestor Samuel Beetem (1767-1856) was raised in Exeter Twp., Berks Co. PA, near the Squire Boone (father of Daniel Boone) family homestead. Samuel's father was a sawyer, and may have worked at Israel Boone's sawmill. Samuel was too young to fight in the Revolutionary War, but his older brother Jacob was in the 9th PA. regiment under Col. Richard Butler, and brother Adam was in the Continental Line. Jacob (1756-1829) was injured at Valentine Hill between Tuchalow and King's Bridge. He lost part of his skull, and thereafter his brain had to be covered with thin greased paper. He never married. On July 3, 1784, their sister Catherine Beetem married John Heinrich Aumann, a former Hessian prisoner of war. This actually came to light through the work of a German researcher of the Aumann family who was tracing this long lost member of the family. I've had a most rewarding correspondence with him over the course of several years, and he shared a wealth of information about the life and background of John Heinrich Aumann which led to his participation in the war. John Heinrich Aumann was bailed out of the POW camp for a pittance to go to work for someone. We have traded speculations over how he met Catherine, but of course, we will probably never know for certain. If it hadn't been for my correspondent, I highly doubt anyone would have stumbled into the knowledge of this war-time romance.
