    3. The simple answer is Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The truth is more complicated: the Brits didn't just pick up their marbles, go home, and negotiate a peace treaty. The war continued in the west. The Battle of Blue Licks in Kentucky -- considered at least by Kentuckians as part of the Revolution -- occurred on August 19, 1782. Clinton and the Brits remained holed up in New York City, and Washington had to keep the Continental Army stationed just north of New York at Newburgh (on the Hudson) until 1783 to keep them from breaking out and starting things all over again. (This was where the Newburgh Conspiracy occurred, when WAshington declined the offer of his officers to become king.) Between 1781 and 1783, in addition to Blue Licks, there were numerous skirmishes with Indians on the western frontier provoked, coordinated, and often led by the British garrison at Detroit. Somewhere long ago, I read a figure that suggested that there were more American casualties -- primarily in the west -- than all of 1775-1781. (One source puts US total casualties in the War were 4,435 slightly less than the number killed on 9/11 and the War in Iraq.) Logan M.
