I think the SAR starts the conflict with the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774 and ends on November 26, 1783, which I believe was the date of the Treaty of Paris. Anyone descended from a patriot in that period is eligible for membership. Logan M. Cheek [email protected] On Jul 14, 2005, at 1:56 PM, Logan M. "Patriot" in the Sons of the Americna Revolution (SAR) definition not only includes those directly involved (like militia and Continental Army troops) in the armed conflict. They also include descendants of people who supported the effort, by supplying goods and services. Sometimes the most difficult part in becoming an SAR member is figuring out if you have a partiot in your bloodline. Then the challenge is documenting your genealogy to that person, since the Patriot has to be a direct blood kin. But once you have all that, it is quite a rewarding experience, and your kids and grandkids will be able to join by proving they are related to you..much easier task than going back eight generations...or ten in their case. For more information on the SAR, or on finding an SAR chapter near you, contact: http://www.sar.org/default.htm Sparks Logan M. You are right about Point Pleasant but persons joining patriotic societies should be careful to remember that the reality is that the Battle of the Point was a campaign under British authority using colonial militia against an Indian tribe. If the SAR/DAR include Point Pleasant (which is fine with me) they would do well to also include the regulators war in North Carolina in 1771 as that one was more like the revolution - colonists fighting organized and recognized authority. I think it was John Adams who said in old age that the American Revolution was a revolution in people's thinking that took place over about 15 years beginning with the Proclaimation of 1763, the tax acts, etc. and ending with a military campaign to win independence. It is also useful to remember that some of the issues never were settled until the War of 1812. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV ----- Original Message ----- From: "Logan M.
