    1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] "National Heritage ARea" being proposed in MA / NH
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, In this morning's "The Lowell Sun" there is an article which is titled: "Revolutionary Boost for Local History," and subtitled: "Freedom's Way National Heritage Area proposed." http://www.lowellsun.com/front/ci_4497137 www.lowellsun.com The article starts out: An area of northeastern Massachusetts that extends from Greater Lowell to northern Worcester County would be designated as a National Heritage Area under legislation that is advancing on Beacon Hill. Local officials, .....have for years sought to recognize the significant historical role played by communities north and west of Boston where the Colonists rose up against the British and ignited the American Revolution. A swath .... which includes 37 cities and towns, stretching from Malden ..... along with eight communities in southern New Hampshire, would be designated ......" (Unfortunately, "The Lowell Sun" does not have a very good web site. It does not provide the photos (etc.) which go along with their articles on their web site.) And, there are many articles which appear in their paper which do not appear on their web site. One example of this is there is an article in the "Travel" section of this morning's newspaper about the "Buckman Tavern" in Lexington. It is a good-size article and includes photos of the tavern (built circa 1710), but the article does not appear on-line. ... At the end of the article on the National Heritage area, it states: "Massachusetts now has two, national heritage areas: the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor, and the Essex National Heritage area." And, I personally know that a good portion of Lowell, MA, is a "State Heritage Park." It basically is the same area where the "Lowell National Historic Park" is ! I don't know what the difference is between a "National Historic Park" and a "National Heritage Area," but it probably has something to do with over 40 towns and cities being involved vs. one city being involved ! I just did a Google search and found this web site: http://www.cr.nps.gov/heritageareas/ Hope this is interesting ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Some growing Rev War Southern Campaign resources
    2. John Robertson
    3. There are several Rev War resources that continue to grow (some daily). All these are related to the Southern Campaign (sorry 'bout that!) Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution newsletter: http://southerncampaign.org/ A monthly (usually) online newsletter, loaded with freshly written articles on Southern Campaign history, archaeology, symposiums, fieldtrips and special interest groups. These are large files and require something like cable-modem or dsl. There are currently something like 24 issues online, amounting to 700 or 800 pages. You can find terse contents of all available articles at one of my pages (not requiring cable-modem or dsl) http://jrshelby.com/sc-links/scar.htm Southern Campaign Revolutionary War Pension Statements: http://southerncampaign.org/pen/ This site has several hundred transcriptions of Southern Campaign pension statements in .pdf format, with an available search engine that will search full text of files on the site. Currently there are 6 or so added daily. You may submit your own transcriptions for posting to the site. This is a current "best kept secret" of Rev War online resources. This site is notable for the high quality of the transcriptions. These files may be downloaded or printed without restriction. Southern Campaign Revolutionary War Pension Statements: http://jrshelby.com/sc-links/rwpensions.htm This page (one of mine) is similar to, and complementary to, the above site. It provides links to Southern Campaign pension statements wherever they can be found on the internet. Keywords are provided for each (battles, units, other items that caught my eye) for almost all of them. E.g., you can do a crude search by using control-f and searching for cowpens and you can find all the pension apps for those in or near the Battle of Cowpens. If you use Firefox, you can select "Highlight all" and it will simultaneously highlight the word Cowpens where it appears on the large webpage. This site contains links (and only links) to all the transcriptions on the above site (a day or two behind) but is intended to include about an equal number from elsewhere on the internet. Unlike the above site, the quality of the transcriptions linked from this site varies widely. Online Library of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War http://jrshelby.com/sc-links/sc-texts.htm This page (and that above) share a common (top of each page) menu having a number of related topics. It contains a huge list of links to online full-text books and articles, somehow related to the Southern Campaign of the Rev War. No one (including me!) has ever read everything found there. Graves of Notables in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War http://jrshelby.com/sc-links/graves/index.htm This is available from the same menu as the above two items. While not Rev War history, for the most part, it provides interesting insights in "whatever happened to ...?" There are some real surprises here. Links are provided, in most cases, to interactive map servers capable of providing driving directions to the sites. Map enthusiasts will find the map links for sites outside the US to be of interest. These sites will serve to introduce you to a sizeable and active informal community of professionals and equally serious amateurs engaged in ongoing fresh research in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. If you care to, all of them provide means whereby you may submit additional material or otherwise become involved.

    1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] (no subject)
    2. Joanne wondered, >When was the NC Continental formed?< There were 10 numbered NC Continental Regiments and two others. You can look up brief summaries of their histories at <http://www.americanrevolution.org> or <http://www.myrevolutionarywar.com/index.htm> An internet search will result in a lot more data. Good hunting, Judy

    3. Thank you,Judy. I have learned there were many men in NC who signed up for the duration of the war. Now curious why my fellow earned a grant of 640 acres while his CO --Arch.Lytle--earned only 500. Perhaps the answer's in the links you sent. --Joanne --------------------------------- Yahoo! 1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] NC Continentals in the Rev. War
    2. qvarizona
    3. I'm trying to confirm information from several documents which state that a member of Archibald Lytle's Reg. served a total of 84 months as a private in the NC Continentals. I know the man served and was awarded with 640 acres in TN, but 84 months of service? Seems in order to do so, he would have to have enlisted in 1775 and stayed until Cornwallis surrendered in 1782. Is that possible? When was the NC Continental formed? Any help appreciated. Joanne __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hugh, this is a little out of my line , but you peeked my interest and I went back into some old books on American Revolution And in a Copy of " Ireland's Important and Heroic Part in America's Independence and Development" by Rev. Frank Reynolds I found this -------Little is heard of the bravery of Captain John Brady, scout and frontiersmen, of the American Army: or Timothy Murphy, the hero of Saratoga; or John Kelly who saved the American Troops from capture by destroying the bridge at Stony Brook, or Lieutenant James Gibbons who led the forlon hope at the storming of Stomy Point--------- the book name others but not at Stony Point; The book I have do not give the Battles these great Soldiers died at. Maybe James Gibbins is one of the Soldiers you are looking for Ann
