"Smileson" asks, >>Where can I find a roster of Capt. Aaron Aorson company? There is a book that: ? (patriots who served but did not live in the Mohawk Valley, NY area.)<< National Archives Micropublication 246, Rolls 65 and 66 have the First NY Regiment (Continental) surviving rolls except for a few that are in the papers of Andrew Finck. At www.fort-klock.com there is a roster of the First NY, with spelling errors and omissions, a snapshot mostly from ca. 1778 but with enlistment and discharge dates as published by Berthold Fernow. It's arranged by Company. A great little book, _History of the First New York Regiment 1775-1783_ by T. W. Egly Jr. (Hampton, NH: Peter E. Randall) is now out of print but you may be able to find a used copy. It has very detailed source notes so is a useful bibliography in addition to the published material. It missed some things, such as capture of some men of this Regiment in March 1777, but is a worthy regimental history. Perhaps you do not wish to know that no sooner had James and John Ryndart enlisted "at Fishkill" in 1782 (for 3 years) than they reported sick, and according to Egly were on Capt. Aorson's Company's roll. Egly gives them as archetypes of a fairly common syndrome; once some enlistees had received whatever bounty or inducement was offered, "men would become disillusioned and become 'sick' or desert" [p. 217]. Egly's allegation and conclusion may be unwarranted; a closer look at the actual rolls may tell you something more. One of my ancestors had enlisted for 9 months in another Regiment, and was in the Company 'hospital' with smallpox (having undergone vaccination) when his time expired. The next roll after expiry states that he 'deserted,' but there's no record of court-martial and he subsequently served actively in local militia campaigns. The full story is not explained by the few surviving records for this Regiment. There were shifts in and ajustment to Company rosters as time passed. Since your man enlisted when the Regiment had been essentially biding time around West Point (since after Yorktown), if he continued to report 'sick' he might have been assigned to a Company roster that was actually under strength with respect to men reporting for active duty. Fernow lists your man in a segment he calls "company not ascertained," having enlisted at the end of August 1782. Concerning folks who saw some service in the Mohawk Valley but did not live there, the "Bloodied Mohawk" site at www.fort-plank.org has a couple of pages of such persons. You have to hunt around, though, because links to all the site's pages do not appear on each page. Your man may have seen some service prior to enlistment in the First NY Regiment, so it's worth while checking in the other rosters at the Fort-Klock site, too. Good hunting, Judy
Captain Aorson's roster is in "New York in the Revolution" by Berthold Fernow. He commanded the fifth company of Col. Peter Gansvoort's 3rd NY regt. Don't see John Rynders. There's a James Rynders and a John Rynders with no company listed, in Col. Van Schaick's 1st NY regt. The 225th anniversary of Yorktown has passed with no notice here, but a tremendous effort by re-enactors rewarded many thousands of onlookers. If you join the Yahoo group called "revlist" you can see two batches of photos. The SAR has also posted photos, but theirs focus on the parade, banquet and contemporary politicians. No wonder they have some recruitment problems. One of my ancestors from the 1st NY Continental was there in the original event as part of Leonard Bleecker's Light Infantry. No banquets and parades for him; his next task was to march with the huge escort of British prisoners. That must have been a sight. Cheers, Judy

There is a very nice long article on Engineers of the Revolution, although this group is oriented to Geographers and Surveyors. For such major enterprises as the battle of Yorktown, all of these had to work together. They may have some leads for you. [http://www.armygeographer.org] Good hunting, Judy
http://www.geocities.com/private_pwar/pwar.htm Prince of Wales American Volunteers Montford Browne assembled the Prince of Wales American Volunteers as a regiment in the year of 1776.At the demise of the war the Prince of Wales American Volunteers departed New York, in September 1783, on the ships Montague and Elizabeth with their destination being the Saint John River. The regiment at this time consisted of 175 officers and men, 68 women, 37 children over 10 years of age, 24 children under 10 years of age, and 28 servants. The Prince of Wales American Volunteers were disbanded in October 1783 and set out to begin their lives a new in the wilds of Nova Scotia (modern New Brunswick). Looking for Ancestors Anyone looking for an ancestor in the ranks of the Prince of Wales American Volunteers may find them on one or several of the complete regiment muster rolls available for viewing. These muster rolls can be borrowed from the National Archives of Canada through many local libraries. You can find a list of microfilm numbers at "Loyalist Regiment Muster Rolls 1777-1783" for this and many other regiments. The task of finding an individual is made easier if it is known what company your ancestor served in. For any of you, who are looking, below is a list that includes many of the men who were in the ranks of the Prince of Wales American Volunteers. The company commanders will be in bold type and the men serving under them will follow in a descending order; each man will have their rank and any other information that I can contribute to the individual. The earliest muster rolls I have viewed, for this regiment, was August 1777; however, Brigadier General Browne's Company was missing. If you have any information on an individual or on the regiment that you may wish to contribute to this page email me at michael.mallery(at)gnb.ca Replace (at) with @
Private Ezekiel Samson, Captain Joseph Hooker's Company (my line through Obadiah, Samuel, Samuel, Abraham, Lawrence,, and John) is buried in the Old White Church Graveyard in Cambridge NY. Another Ezekiel Sampson, possibly through Samuel Samson/Hasadiah Eddy (NJ), Samuel (abt 1700-1757)/Rachel Carter (abt 1700-1771) (NJ), Ezekiel Samson (?)/Susannah (most likely not Lurannah) Northrup (a very well documented line) (Orange County, NY), who had at least six kids—Issac, Samuel, Henry, Rachel, George Washington, and Ezekiel, exists. Ezekiel and Henry came to Montgomery County and their ministrey in known. Henry married a Sarah Whitaker from NJ. A Lieutenant Ezekiel Samson served with Colonel Moyan's 4th Light Brigade which was largely organized of 6 troops from PA, MD, VI, NJ, and apparently NY (see below and not Massachusetts). A National Archive Military Record Lieutenant Ezekiel Samson shows him to be a member of Captain Peter Mill's Company who served under Lieutenant Colonel Luther Baldwin (not Juduthan Baldwin) Regiment of Artificers. New York in the Revolution as Colony and State by Roberts indicates that Lt. Ezekiel Samson was with Colonel Moyan's 4th Light Dragoon Unit and Captain Peter Mills is listed as a member of Lieutenant Colonel Luther Baldwin's Regiment Artificer Unit. "The Historical Register of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War" by Francis Heitman lists Ezekiel Sampson of Baldwin's Artillery Artificer Regiment, 16th August 1777, and the New York War Records show Lt. Ezekiel Sampson in Colonel Moyan's 4th Light Dragoons, Poughkeepsie, 1780. I would appreciate information as to whether Lieutenant Colonel Luther Baldwin's Artillery Artificer Unit served in support of Colonel Moylan's Light Dragoon Unit and any references to the history of Lieutenant Colonel Luther (not Juduthan) Baldwin's Artillery Artificer Unit would be appreciated. Thank you. Fred Samson.

If Rebel, was he militiaman, State Troops or Continental? Good hunting, Judy
