    3. Terri, I'm one of those people who helps with applications for my chapter. Most chapters have one or more people who are willing and able to help, including the registrar who prepares and submits the applications. There are also volunteers at state and national levels who will do lookups, etc. Have you contacted a chapter in your area? 2. Terri, Many DAR Chapters have volunteers that will assist with lineage research, often depending on how large the local chapter is and how many volunteers they have available to help. In other Chapters, it is the Registrar that will assist. I myself am a Registrar for my Chapter. Will probably be able to help you locate a local Chapter if you'd like me to? Also at www.dar.org, you could search for a Chapter in your state. Hope this helps. 3. Terri, I had sent a query to DAR re. a RWV, and with the response, was info about joining DAR. I think I just clicked on a link and then filled out some online form. Here's part of the email I got back: Your information is being added to our database. The State Membership Chairman in your state is also being contacted. She will notify a local chapter, who will contact you. Chapters meet once a month, September thru May, so please allow up to two months for chapter contact. Your reference number is: xxxxxxx Thank you for your interest, Membership Information Department, NSDAR ProspectiveMembers@dar.org Within a very short time, I got an email from the DAR State Membership Chairperson for Arizona, who sent a lovely letter explaining it was her job to answer any questions and to find me a DAR chapter. A few days later, I was contacted by a woman from the Chapter closest to me. Her job, she said, was to sent me the membership application and answers all my questions. NOTE: She does NOT do my research for me, but does clarify what is needed, e.g. I had hoped my dad's birth certificate naming and signed by his mother would suffice for her "birth" record, but was told no. I should try to find her certificate and her marriage certificate. I have still not joined, nor made up my mind if I want to. As far as I know, one can join with or without a completed/accepted application. In my own case, the problems are not with my RWV ancestor --I have more than enough documentation to show his involvement in the Revolution, and an undisputable paper trail connecting him to my grandmother-- but trying to decide if I want to spend the time and $$$ to get all the more recent marriage, birth, death, etc. copies I need to send for. . . .Alas, so many ancestors, so many genealogy projects --I'm do volunteer research, teach genealogy, continue to do my own research etc.-- and what does DAR "acceptance" of my ancestor and me really mean? That someone approves my research? Documentation required by DAR are --for BOTH the direct line and spouse-- state certificates of birth, marriage and death as far back as they were available in the appropriate state, census, obituaries, wills, land records - just to name a few. Family genealogy books are only accepted if it is well documented AND if the book is at the DAR Library in DC (you can check their on-line catalogue at www.dar.org). Hope this helps. 3. Donna, The DAR Patriot Index has 3 Richards listed under the surname Thomas. The one which matches yours states: b c 1745 d 1 - - 1839 m (1) Rhoda Porter Pvt MD. This means he was born circa 1745 but no place of birth is given, he died on the 1st day of an unknown month in 1839, his 1st wife was Rhoda Porter, and he served as a private in Maryland. I believe the Patriot Index only lists Patriots who have had someone join the DAR using the listed Patriot as an ancestor. 2. Hi, Did you refer this question to DAR at National? Perhaps they can answer your question. Pat In a message dated 12/4/06 5:44:22 P.M. The pensioner is Edmund BIRD of Mt. Pleasant, New York. His son is Daniel BIRD who was born December 23, 1791 in Tarrytown, New York and died May 27, 1829 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Since I cannot find either a birth certificate or death certificate for Daniel I used the following as proof: Military Bounty Land Warrant 983, which clearly states that Daniel Bird was in fact the son of the pensioner, Edmund R. Bird . The Federal Land Series, the Pioneer Land Grants of Guernsey County, the Tract Book and Entries U.S. Military District, and the Tax Record Guernsey County, all listing Daniel, son of pensioner Edmund Bird. His birth is also listed as the son of Edmund BIRD in "Families of the Colonial Town of Philipsburg" by Grenville C. Mackensie. So this is the problem: he was awarded the land grant in 1821 but his father did not die until 1835. For this reason they claim he cannot possibly be the son of Edmund. 3. Diana, I show the heirs of an Edmund Bird filing for his pension in 1821. I also show Edmund R Bird having filed for his Revolutionary War Pension in Apr of 1817. Is it possible that you are trying to claim under the wrong Edmund Bird? Daniel Bird is listed in the former document as follows: “Daniel Bird only son and only heir at law to Edmund Bird decd”. I believe the Daniel Bird you are trying to gain membership into the DAR under has not yet been referenced and is therefore not in the books. I have the files if you want me to send them to your e-mail address. You can reach me at tommontague@cox.net. 3. Hello, Have found that War 1812 gives the best information on applications for pensions. You might prove the difference between the two men by their wives or their place of residence in 1835 or another date. It is hard to prove a lineage when they all have the same names, I personally know. 3. To add more to what Pat said: Didn't DAR assign you someone to help? My chapter assigns an experienced DAR researcher to assist and advise new applicants. I assume --nasty word for a researcher-- all chapters do the same. My own problem with DAR is that until fairly recently, the documentation they required was not up to par, and consequently, early members were often accepted with errors in their records that later applicants had to disprove in order to have their own document records accepted. 2. I am at my wits end and am hoping that someone on this list can help me.  I had applied to the DAR for the second time and was denied yet again. Does anyone know about this particular BIRD family and does anyone know why someone would have been awarded a land grant from a father that was still alive?  HELP!

Ever hear of Ben Franklin's Loyalist eldest son, William? Or the myriad brothers and cousins shooting at each other in the Civil War? Presume nothing; be open to everything. Mark

    3. Greetings, I am trying to determine if one John Janvrin of Rockingham County, NH served in the Revolutionary War. John was born in 1754 in Newington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire to John Janvrin and Elizabeth Stickney. He married Elizabeth Gilman Adams (d/o Dr. Joseph Adams and Joanna Gilman) first, and after her death in child birth or shortly after married Jane Swett. (I'm descended from his first and only son with Elizabeth.) John Janvrin died on the 2 Nov 1837. At this moment I have little idea if John may have served in the War but he was certainly of the correct generation, and the fact of his location as well as his marriage to the first cousin of President Adams suggests that if he did serve it was probably on the Patriot side. Thank you for any insights you may have. Best regards, Kenneth ____________________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! 1. Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Captain--education, philosophy
    2. Barbara writes, >>Particularly that part about the tearing apart of the social fabric by use of Schooling..............What Rubbish!<< Perhaps you are not aware of the brutal boarding schools far from home to which Native American children were sent by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where they were punished if they used their own languages and it was virtually impossible for their families to visit them. Possibly you do not know of the long history of use of religious missionary schools as part of the colonial program. Perhaps you do not know of such insidious little programs as the one that cross-bred churro sheep in the Southwest so their fleece no longer had the clean characteristics that enabled ready use in a water-poor environment. It is much more pleasant to think of our past as sweetness and light, rather than land theft, imposed impoverishment, racism and murder condoned by the majority. The society of the Greek philosophers was also a slave society. Judy
