If you have access to the publications of the National Genealogical Society, check out the Quarterly, Volume 79, Number 1, March, 1991. On page 5, Helen F. M. Leary has written an article, "Certification of Genealogists: A Consumers Report". Ms. Leary outlines the certification requirements and the categories. One can check the NGS on-line site and read about the courses offered and the fees attached thereto. Also the above cited issue of the quarterly may be available for purchase through their on-line site. The address for the Board for Certification of Genealogists is P.O. Box 5816, Falmouth,VA 22403-5815. Ms. Leary served as president at the time of writing the above referenced article. I am not sure but the Family History Center may also offer courses of study in preparation for the testing and certification. The BGC will take legal action against persons using designations fraudulently. One must retest every five years to ensure skills are updated and their work is of quality in order to maintain their certification. The BGC does not offer courses but is an independent accrediting organization. Tree Mother "She is insane, of course. The family history has become a mania for her." What did I say to make you so sad? I had just never heard the term "Certified Genealogist" before, and wondered, is there really a Certification of Genealogy? In response to this in Joanne's message: "NOTE: She does NOT do my research for me, but does clarify what is needed, e.g. I had hoped my dad's birth certificate naming and signed by his mother would suffice for her "birth" record, but was told no. I should try to find her certificate and her marriage certificate." Technically the person who told you this is correct. The DAR loves it when every step of the ancestry is documented with birth, marriage, death certificates, but often this just isn't available. At those times, other documentation will work. Bible records, school records, documents signed by a parent, for example. It's no wonder ladies are afraid to try to join the DAR; unfortunately, some chapters and members make it sound so much more complicated than it really is. Our regent and registrar help with research, the applications (the application form is on-line and available to members so it's easy to help prospects by filling out their applications for them). I hope the bickering and sniping on this site does not discourage ladies from joining. It is a very worthwhile organization that works hard to help veterans, children, schools, & patriotic endeavors. Our chapter has fun and welcomes new members; we have more than 20 new members/applicants right now, and it isn't "your grandma's DAR" in our chapter.
Stephen, try this web site; it appears to be the site of a Seattle chapter. Good luck. Our chapter in Kentucky is attracting members nearly monthly right now. Three or four of us meet at the library each Wednesday afternoon for a couple of hours to help people with applications, as well as help with their research. We do what it takes to attract new members, including streamlined meetings, interesting speakers, worthwhile projects, good public relations and publicity. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wamgcdar/ If this doesn't work. I typed DAR Seattle into my browser and found the site for the state organization and then a list of chapters, including one in Seattle. Has anyone ever joined the D.A.R. with Speck or Specht as the surnames? Any help would be appreciated. Gary in Kentucky
Ester, I would appreciate any time you can spare. I have traced my line back to Boston Sebastian Graves (for whom the DAR provided a cemetery marker). I have documented each generation with documents such as census, court records, boundary lines for property, birth or death certificates, wills naming heirs etc. keeping as much as possible to primary documents. I would like to submit it but would appreciate an "experienced" eye looking it over. We currently live in Reston, Va. but will be moving to Gainsville, Georgia (outside of Atlanta, Ga.) sometime in May or June. Dear Ester, My wife is a direct descendant of several American Revolutionary war soldiers, including both the American Patriot and Loyalist sides. Regarding the Patriot side I have obtained previous DAR genealogical records which were used by a cousin of her's and have also collected many other vital records, ect. I would like to assist my wife and daughter in completing the DAR registration as well. Would you have any suggestions for us in this process. Where do you find a local DAR chapter, ect.? Thank you for your kind reply! Sincerely, Stephen G. Schweyen Seattle

I'm sorry you feel obligated to judge my problems without knowing what they are, and I'm not sure why you need to know, but I think your lack of understanding says more about you than me. Have you never seen blanks in a family line? It just so happens that my "documental blanks" are in the generations between me and my grandmothers, not because I don't know who they are, but because of situations that make finding the proof very difficult. For reasons too complicated to explain here, more than one on-site visit to a distant courthouse will be required, and due to age and other difficulties, it is not easy for me to make that trip. Frankly, it's DAR members like you who make me hesitate to even consider it. Of course you should be proud to be a DAR member, and hopefully, you earned it yourself, and didn't stop there but continued to learn more about your family history. I am fortunate in not needing any help proving my RWV's participation, as all are well known and mentioned by people like George Washington and Gen. Nathaniel Greene. Three of them are mentioned in almost every history of the Revolution written about their home states. All left wills, bibles and land deeds. I know where they lived, who their neighbors were, and was fortunate enough to trace several old ancestral homes that are still standing. Nevertheless. smugness is not a trait I think in vogue, so I'll agree to stop sounding smug if you will. Joanne Merrill Kartak Descendant of John and Priscilla Alden, Judge Samuel Sewall, Thomas Rowland, James Gilmore, As a proud member of the DAR I am glad I have been able to research at least one ancestor and have him now on the rolls of known Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots. I have several more men that need recognition and as hard as it is to find documents in Mississippi where records are as scarce as raindrop in the Sahara Desert, I am hoping that the sand in my hourglass does not run out before I can complete the documentation for these unknown heroes of American Liberty. Membership in the DAR is not for me...it is for them. The DAR local chapters are pleased to review your documentation and let you know what you will need if anything to prove link in the family ancestry--birth, death, marriage. It is not the purpose of the DAR to do one's research. If you are having trouble with record resources talk to your local genealogy librarian or historical society. Read about the record archives in the states with which you are concerned. I don't understand how anyone can claim to be teaching genealogy and not have their own family documents at hand. DAR ASSISTANCE http://www.rootsweb.com/ Message Boards Click on TOPICS Click on ORGANIZATION AND SOCIETIES Click on Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Post your query here, they will answer and help you find a local chapter that will work with you on finding your Rev Ancestors. Good Luck in your research
I am a new Registrar for my local chapter of the DAR and I had my research accepted in 2005. I was able to prove a birth date using a census. I used an 1880 census to establish my great grandfather and his sons (my grandfather wasn't born at that time). Then there was no census for 1890 that would help me, but the 1900 census had my grandfather living in the home of his brother (and the relationship was stated on the census.) With that information I provided a statement with the application to explain the relationship. A census is a legal document. This just shows that you can get a little creative when you have to. I am told that the strictness of the DAR genealogist varies and if you get a tough one it's very hard. My chapter offers help with the research. If I may be of any assistance to anyone, please let me know. Ester
