Good luck. Our chapter in Kentucky is attracting members nearly monthly right now. Three or four of us meet at the library each Wednesday afternoon for a couple of hours to help people with applications, as well as help with their research. We do what it takes to attract new members, including streamlined meetings, interesting speakers, worthwhile projects, good public relations and publicity. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wamgcdar/ If this doesn't work. 3. I didn't say there was no such thing as a certified genealogist. I said the DAR doesn't have a "certified genealogist" position, as such. 3. I didn't write "Where do you find a local DAR chapter?" I answered someone who wrote that. I've been a member for years, with 17 proven ancestors and one pending. Have held many offices; and completed applications for 20 new members in the past year. I still say the easiest and quickest way to find a chapter is to Google or use any web browser by writing "DAR Oregon" or wherever. Most state web sites have listings of all chapters in the state with links to the registrar or regent's e-mail address. Another point is that the latest edition of the DAR Patriot Index is already outdated and the National web site is the best way to check for proven patriots. Officers of the local chapters have access to the very latest information. There is also a web site for non-members at http://www.dar.org/ At that site you can find a "patriot lookup" request form. If you fill out that form you will get a response from National within a few days. And of course, you really don't need to try to remember any of these addresses -- just put DAR in the browser and scroll down to find National or your state. 1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Dar - A Wonderful Organization
    2. Caryn
    3. Greetings Listers, I read this list and learn a great deal on a weekly basis. Now it is my turn to share. I joined DAR because I wanted to honor my patriots who served to make this the great country it is. I had to research and document every ancestor back to my "favorite" ancestor a fighting Quaker. It was not easy but I learned a great deal. Along the way I had many DAR members help me. When it got down to approving my application I was fortunate enough to be able to visit DC and meet with the genealogist employee reviewing my file. I have since documented and honored two more revolutionary ancestors. DAR is a patriotic organization. It is current. It is non-political (although you may run into some strong willed individuals). Most of all it is an organziation of women who treasure their lineage. I have been priviledged to be a member in Virginia Beach and now Maryland. Within the membership of DAR there are Certified Genealogists. They DO NOT market their skills. In some chapters there are membership chairs who are the first liaison to a potential member. Each chapter does have a registrar. Some chapters have few members others like both of mine have ACTIVE membership in excess of 60 people. If you need help ask for it. Honoring your ancestor for your heirs is a living gift. One cannot explain, it is a feeling, a powerful feeling to know that you can honor your lineage. 1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] AMERICAN-REVOLUTION What is the SAR?
    2. What is the SAR? The SAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic non-profit, United States 501(c)3, corporation that seeks to maintain and extend *  the institutions of American freedom*  an appreciation for true patriotism*  a respect for our national symbols*  the value of American citizenship*  the unifying force of 'e pluribus unum' that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people. We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions. Historical • We commemorate and provide memorials for the people and events of the American Revolution. • We help preserve records relating to the events leading up to and during the American Revolution. • The National SAR was a major force behind the construction of the National Archives in Washington DC and the collection of historic documents there. • We support research and presentations (books, articles, and talks) related to the history and people of the period 1750-1800. • The national SAR Magazine publishes authoritative descriptions of historical events in a quality magazine of archival value. • The SAR Revolutionary War Graves Committee published information on some 54,000 grave sites of patriots in the NSSAR Revolutionary War Graves Register, published in 1993.  More names have been collected and the entire 140,000 names and locations have now been published on CDROM. • The Patriot Index Committee is publishing a CDROM with information on 732,000 patriots and their descendants. Patriotic • We inspire the community with the principles on which our nation was founded. • Many chapters and states have color guards that wear Revolutionary War uniforms and participate in civic and patriotic events and observances such as Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day, Patriots Day (April 19), Bill of Rights Day, Yorktown Day, Constitution Day, and important battles of the Revolutionary War. • Each year the SAR National Congress passes resolutions to stimulate personal and national action based on these principles. • We maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom. In 1994 the NSSAR formed a Task Force to Preserve U. S. History to help focus public attention on profound problems in some proposed national standards for teaching pre-college U. S. History. • We help carry out the promises expressed in the Preamble to the Constitution. • We provide recognition for public service. The state societies and chapters of the NSSAR present thousands of awards each year to law enforcement officers, public safety officers, and other citizens who exemplify the best civic traditions of our nation. This includes young men and women who are leaders in our communities: high-ranking high school students of history, Eagle Scouts, JROTC and ROTC cadets and midshipmen. • We honor, respect, and support veterans, especially those confined to residential and hospital facilities provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Educational • We sponsor contests -- essay and oration -- for high school students, based on historical and patriotic themes. • We distribute history curriculum at no cost to the recipient.  This curriculum was developed by the Houston Independent School System in cooperation with the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation and the American Heritage Education Foundation, Inc. • We inform the community about the events and philosophical bases of the American Revolution and the Constitution.  Color Guards in Revolutionary War uniforms participate in civic events and patriotic celebrations throughout the United States, providing pageantry, drama and a sense of the nation's history.  Important events and persons of the Revolutionary period are portrayed for students and the public at large. • The SAR Magazine provides a public record of the activities of the society and has numerous articles detailing the history of the initial and continuing struggle for independence. • We help people locate and evaluate genealogical records. Our state and chapter registrars have excellent resources, and the NSSAR library is a major national repository of genealogical information. http://www.sar.org/

    3. I thougth about joining SAR, but, I couldn't really find any real reason to...it doesn't seem that they "do" anything, and that membership is pretty expensive considering it doesn't "mean" anything... (If someone can provide good reason to join, let me know!) -----Original Message----- From: american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Reeser Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 10:36 AM To: american-revolution@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] DAR and research In response to this in Joanne's message: "NOTE: She does NOT do my research for me, but does clarify what is needed, e.g. I had hoped my dad's birth certificate naming and signed by his mother would suffice for her "birth" record, but was told no. I should try to find her certificate and her marriage certificate." Technically the person who told you this is correct. The DAR loves it when every step of the ancestry is documented with birth, marriage, death certificates, but often this just isn't available. At those times, other documentation will work. Bible records, school records, documents signed by a parent, for example. It's no wonder ladies are afraid to try to join the DAR; unfortunately, some chapters and members make it sound so much more complicated than it really is. Our regent and registrar help with research, the applications (the application form is on-line and available to members so it's easy to help prospects by filling out their applications for them). I hope the bickering and sniping on this site does not discourage ladies from joining. It is a very worthwhile organization that works hard to help veterans, children, schools, & patriotic endeavors. Our chapter has fun and welcomes new members; we have more than 20 new members/applicants right now, and it isn't "your grandma's DAR" in our chapter. 3. David-- Don't feel badly, many people do not have any idea of what "certified genealogist --C.G.-- means, or why it may be of any importance. I'm sorry I even mentioned it, and sorrier still, that the word "certified" makes some people sad. Below are some links that will explain what the term means. I'm tempted to offer an explanation of why certification can be of importance, but will refrain; I've already caused enough of an uproar... and that was NOT my intention. --Joanne Definitions of Accredited, Certified, Professional genealogists, etc. http://genealogy.about.com/library/tips/blprofessional.htm Board for certification of genealogists- Mission: To foster public confidence in genealogy as a respected branch of history by promoting an attainable, uniform standard of competence and ethics among genealogical practitioners; and by publicly recognizing persons who meet that standard. http://www.bcgcertification.org/certification/index.html More information about certified genealogist organizations: http://www.apgen.org/resources/index.html David Reed <DaveReed@midmaine.com> wrote: What did I say to make you so sad? I had just never heard the term "Certified Genealogist" before, and wondered, is there really a Certification of Genealogy? And if so, what is it, and what is involved in becoming "Certified"? I'm sorry, didn't mean to make you sad. -David -----Original Message----- From: Karen Sullivan [mailto:ksullivan@hvc.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 11:49 AM To: DaveReed@midmaine.com; american-revolution@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] DAR and research I'm third generation DAR, am a chapter regent, have volunteered to help with applications, databases, etc. The DAR does not have a "certified genealogist" position, so I don't know where this is coming from. We have volunteer genealogists at chapter, state, and national levels, but we're not arrogant about it. We are always willing to help, no matter what level of expertise or experience an applicant may have. This attitude makes me so sad. 1. Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Speck or Specht
    2. Tom Montague
    3. There are 4 Specht/Speck/Spect names listed in the DAR Patriot Index so the answer would be yes. The names listed as having served in the Revolutionary War are Adam, Christian, John Conrad, and Michael. All were born and served and died in PA except John Conrad who was born in Germany and served and died in MD.
