Dear List Friends, I've just returned from our DAR chapter meeting. Here's what happened: we had a business meeting at an historic location, the Andrew Jackson Downing Park Visitors Center. After the business meeting, we presented our Community Service Award to a member of our community who has devoted many hours to helping the homeless. The guests who attended were members of the recipient's family with all the children, the director of the local outreach center, the pastors of her church, and a number of other people who have known her for years, plus of course, the members of our chapter who attended the meeting. We had a beautiful reception with delicious refreshments, and everyone had a great time talking about everything, including their ancestors, genealogy, the Revolutionary War, veterans, and patriotism. Yes, I know that this is off topic, but the critical messages about the DAR have made it necessary for me to tell the members of the list that we are not all like that -- in fact, I've not met any like that. Please try to find a chapter that is warm and welcoming -- there are many of them. Karen Sullivan, Regent Quassaick Chapter DAR
You are right, and I'm sorry for my part in this heated discussion. It was not my intention to bash DAR or SAR, but couldn't resist answering some of the remarks made about me. Please accept my apology. Joanne cartwheel1@juno.com wrote: How long before the List Manager steps in and stops this "DAR/SAR" bashing ? Dear Listers: How can I find out if anyone has joined the DAR by proving lineage to William (W) Wood, Rev War Patriot who fought from Orange County NC with a total service of 2 years? William Wood was born 7-15-1751 in Lancaster County PA and died Sep 1, 1837 in Halifax County NC. The DAR has provided info that Wm Wood was a patriot from Orange county NC. I also have his pension papers from NARA that states he drew a Rev War pension effective Oct 10, 1832. One of my ancestors in Wm Wood's lineage "Calvin W. Wood's" gravestone in Lamar County TX states "buried under the auspices of the DAR." I know this William Wood is mine but can't find his will for proof. Can anyone help? Many thanks, Doris June
Hi Frank, My name is Donald L. Springer. I have chased my ancestors back to the NY 4th Regiment Continental Line. I subscribe to these lists on the of chance that I can find documentation much the same as described in Mike's query. Any help would be appreciated. The ancestors, two of them, both served in the same unit. The unit only lasted about one year, 1775 to 1776 and then was split up into other units. I have found them on the Mohawk Valley site in the above unit. The names are Isaac Springer as a Lt. and Isaac Springer, his son, as a private. Any documentation would surely help. This was the other posting I felt needed a response, and when no one "spoke up", decided that as a matter of honor, I would. TreeMother wrote, "I wonder why some folks do not understand the concept of Honor?" Seems like that's a bit of an underhanded remark, and I found nothing in the post she apparently is responding to that would cause such an uncalled for comment. I'm new to this list, and was surprised at how much mail has to do with DAR, and how many of the posters are members. This discussion has been interesting, and as a newby, at first I resisted joining in, but must speak up and share my own experience with DAR. I, too, filled out their online form to inquire about an ancestor, and the only information I got back amounted to, "Yes. He's registered. Would you like to join DAR?" There was no offer to share any other information. Not to be deterred, I then went to ancestry.com to see what they had in their DAR volumns. I could find members listed, but no history of the Rev. War Vets. Just how do they honor their own Rev. War Vet if they keep them so well hidden? Do they really believe that they're honoring someone by putting their name in an index? I suggest the telphone book at least makes those listed accessible. Do you know that the Veterans Administrations will place a marker for anyone with military service who does not already have a headstone/marker? If you can document they had service, you can get a free headstone/marker. The only catch is that is that it has to be shipped to someone who will be responsible for installing it. Also, you have to get permission from place the marker wherever. If some one is known to have died in a particular location, but the exact whereabouts is unknown, you can place the marker wherever you can get permission. Example: There is a little cemetery at the Battle of Kettle Creek near Washington, GA. The markers are there, even though there are no actual burials there. My ancestor participated in the Battle of Kettle Creek, but did not died in 1807. He was probable buried on his on land near the Battlefield. I wish I could put a marker for him in the battlefield cemetery, but I don't think there is any more room there. I have a civil war ancestor who is supposed to be buried in a family cemetery, but he has no maker. I would like to get one for him -- someday. More projects to work on in my "spare time". Phyllis

Mike, I am responsible for the site to which you were referred: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/sarapk.htm Unfortunately, I've got the same problem as you; the records of NY militia were lost in a fire. The swamps of South Carolina hold the lost remains of many, many a man who never was buried nor received a grave stone. The DAR and SAR will place a memorial marker for these men wherever they may be buried. I haven't asked what they do about those who died in the swamps. How long before the List Manager steps in and stops this "DAR/SAR" bashing ? I left the Civil War list because people could not stick to Genealogy and I guess I'll do the same here. Russell
Pyllis-- After following up on all the links you've provided, I have to admit, that YES, the new DAR is NOT the DAR of a few years ago, but much improved. I do Joanne PmpGenie@aol.com wrote: The DAR Patriot Index is by name. You can also search by the spouse's name. --snip-- Obviously, I believe that my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War so that their children could freely speak their minds, protest, and criticize the president, without being called "traitors." -- snip -- Hallelujah...!!! I was always of the opinion that the things that were fought for were the very freedoms that -I- feel Americans are all to willing to sign away today in the name of false security...The First Amendment (It's the FIRST ONE!!!) among them. I had the same reaction to a statement made by George H. W. Bush (the current Presidents father...) "No, I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God." -George H. W. Bush, to Robert Sherman, at Chicago's O'Hare Airport while announcing federal disaster relief for Illinois, August 27, 1987 "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - attributed to Benjamin Franklin Wanna call it RAD? :) Revolutionary War American Descendents? :) hahahaha Where do I sign up? :) -David

Dangitall, I forget, but it must be whoever's email address is in "From" below. If you're really curious, you can go to the list's archives, but basically, the poster presented a list of activities. I'm having trouble with email lately. The letter I was replying to was suppose to go with my reply, and format in email I send won't hold up.
