    3. Thanks James I've been struggling with UK research for many years now. Our first known immigrant came from Ireland about 1773 where the family lived for about 150 years.... , but he was of an English family living inside the pale. DNA testing determined he was part of a much larger family with a much more common surname.....so I had to find ways to search out pertinent records. Here is another site that I've had some luck with searching British records http://www.british-history.ac.uk/ Do a search with a surname.... happy hunting! and a Merry Christmas to all...... PS.... John Grant Rencher fought on the side of the revolutionaries (not the loyalist) in the PA 5th, after being appointed an ensign in the Chester County Flying Camp.... July 1, 1776 >Bev, >I'm Impressed! 3. Bev, I'm Impressed! Talk about a well organized National Archives...I like the way the British National Archive site is put together. A quick search turned up documents in a date range in the 1200s. I've bookmarked that and will certainly spend more time there. I called up some family names, and although I didn't see any family members I recognized, I was impressed with the number of my family names that turned up on 'ship lists' for emmigrants. Nice tip. We should ALL consider it your stocking stuffer to us. My aunt has an ancestor named Daniel McKillop, who I am trying to find out as much as I can about so I can give her her family history. Here is what I have so far. Daniel McKillop was a British Officer who fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794. I found a small snippet that said he was one of four officers to be mortally wounded, so I assume he died on that day. Although the Battle of Fallen Timbers is fascinating, I am mainly concerned, right now, with getting all the information about Daniel McKillop that I can, and then come back and look at the battle as a whole. Does anyone know how I can get records about British Officers, or books about the battle that have his name in them? 3. Hi Terry If you google "daniel mckillop" genealogy you'll get some decent hits on his family history (one of them told about Eleanor Little being captured by Indians.... ) then google just daniel mckillop, but choose google books... Also google books "Fallen timbers".....750 hits... One of the best sites I've found for British research is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ Quite a few hits on the McKillop name Google books can be frustrating because sometimes you just get a little snippet view of what you are looking for...but at least you can get a name and maybe get the book at the library. >Hello Everyone, > >I am new to this list, so please bear with me. > >My aunt has an ancestor named Daniel McKillop, who I am trying to find out >as much as I can about so I can give her her family history. > >Here is what I have so far. > >Daniel McKillop was a British Officer who fought in the Battle of Fallen >Timbers on August 20, 1794. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN Illinois Historical Survey and Lincoln Room University Library 1408 West Gregory Drive 346 Library, MC-522 Urbana, IL 61801 November 9, 2004 George Patrick Austin, Texas 78744 Dear Mr. Patrick: Thank you for your letter of November 5, 2004. Enclosed with this letter please find copies of the following pages from the Illinois Historical Survey's Richard Clough Anderson Papers: "Survey No. 7185, 200 acres, Robert Eager, Warrant No. 5395" (Folder 52, Item 28) "Jefferson Co., Va., Certification of transcript of January 12, 1808, John Ager alleged to be eldest son and heir at law of Robert Ager, March 3, 1836" (Folder 93, Item 4) I want to point out, at this point, that the photocopy of "Survey No. 7185" is an enlargement of the original document. You will also find that the "Certification of transcript of January 12, 1808," is three pages long. Additionally, your check was enough to cover the costs of photocopying and shipping. We appreciate your generosity to our institution. I trust that the copies will be to your satisfaction. Please let me know if we can be of further service to you. Sincerely, Adam Groves Illinois Historical Survey lskjtelephone 217-333-1777 --------------- Note from George: Richard Clough Anderson was appointed to survey and issue land in the area west of Virginia which eventually turned out to be Ky. Ohio, and etc. A Google search for Richard Clough Anderson can explain this very complicated area far better than can I. In brief, though, it seems that many of the documents generated and stored by Richard C. Anderson and his son-in-law were never filed in Washington like most other records. After Anderson died his son-in-law didn't know what to do with all of the boxes of records so he divided them into five parts and tried to sell or give them to persons or institutions which might preserve them--I suppose! The above letter describes where I found the original land grant for my Rev War ancestor's service. Seems the materials were stored for safe-keeping in the basement of one of the history departments for safe-keeping and all but forgotten. A young lady looking for a subject for her Master's thesis was assigned the task of indexing some of the boxes. These were eventually digitalized and made available online. The introduction to the Richard Clough Anderson Papers tells where the other four parts of the documents are but I haven't researched that topic. Seems like every time we say that everything is probably in the National Archives we find that we are probably wrong. George

    2. Gerald asked if "Chester County Pa. 3rd Co, Battalion 4th, Class 7, a Militia Unit, Officer was Col. James Porter"? If you took this word-for-word off the Penna. Archives ARIAS card listing, the answer is yes. State Troops were never described as being County units, and neither were Continental Regiments. ARIAS does not list Continental troops, even from Penna (except by accident if a man enlisted in the Continentals after having some County or State service, but ARIAS would not list his Continental service). Good hunting, Judy

    3. Ernie, Pvt. John Stoops did not appear in the Saratoga index but that doesn't mean that he didn't serve with Daniel Morgan in some of the battles. I did note that you were looking for John stoops in Cumberland County. A part of Cumberland County was part of Maryland early on. So, I did a Google search of : "John Stoops", Maryland and found a great many websites with lots of information on the Stoops family. John Stoops must have been quite well-known in early Maryland and some of the sites do have references to the American Revolution. Maybe this will help? Also About.com has some good articles on such matters. As to your conclusion about why your man did not receive a pension, his having less than 9 months that you can document may not be the reason. For example, some served on the Patriot side early in the war but later went over to the British--one example of this was a son of a famous Mohawk Valley commander; the son started out as a commissioned officer in the First New York Continental Regiment. 1. Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Dec. 25, 1777, Christmas Day
    2. George, still enjoy reading all you have posted about the Rev. War. I need to ask another question, yesterday or today you posted and in your email it was about getting a Rev. War pension and that a person needed to have served 9 months or more to be eligible to receive one. I have misplaced this email and can't remember what was said. The reason I am asking I am researching my 4th great grandfather Abraham Fuller for a possible SAR supplement. I have found some info that he served in Caswell Co. NC with Capt. Turner's Company and the info I have is he served from March 15 to July 30, 1779. I find no evidence that he applied for a pension, so if you had to serve 9 months or more this is probably the reason I haven't found a request for a pension for Abraham. Could you verify the length of service requirement for a pension for me? Thanks Charles Fuller ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Patrick" <gpatrick@austin.rr.com> To: <american-revolution@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2006 10:35 AM Subject: Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Dec. 25, 1777, Christmas Day > Good idea! 3. Do a search of the Valley Forge "Muster Roll" at http://valleyforgemusterroll.org/QueryMSAccess.asp I counted 75 Lewis's of which there are 3 John's from Virginia and 1 Thomas but no James's. You may find the one you are looking for. Good luck, Tom Montague -----Original Message----- From: american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:american-revolution-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeanne Bedwell Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2006 2:24 AM To: AMERICAN-REVOLUTION@rootsweb.com Subject: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Alpheus Lewis I am looking for the Revolutionary War record of Alpheus Lewis, b. 26 Sep 1745 in Albemarle County, VA. In a 1942 Topeka newspaper article, his great-granddaughter Jennie Lewis Riner Aldrich stated that he was a member of a Pennsylvania regiment and spent the winter with Washington's Army at Valley Forge. No record has shown up yet for his service and he is not listed in the DAR Patriots Index. His son Thomas Lewis, b. 1779 in PA, received a land patent in Indiana in 1829. A grandson was named "James Alpheus Lewis," perhaps a clue that Alpheus enlisted under another name, such as James or John. jeanne bedwell List Mom for the AMERICAN-REVOLUTION mailing list: Diana Boothe philsbarbie1@arkansasfamilies.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ We have archives! 1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Col. Daniel MORGAN-Summer 1775
    2. "Winchester, Virginia And Its Beginnings 1743-1814" By Katherine Glass GREENE 1926 Page 126 Captain Daniel MORGAN's company which on July 14, 1775, left Winchester on its six hundred mile march on foot and accompaned by one wagon, reached Cambridge, Mass., on August 7. WASHINGTON wept as he held these old friends and took them by the hand. Their march to Quebec, their hardships, their endurance and marvelous preservation from disaster are household history. Among the privates from Winchester are found the names of George GREENWAY, William GREENWAY, Seth STRATTON, John SCHULTZ, Jacob SPERRY, Peter LAUCK, Simon LAUCK, Frederick KURTZ, Adam KURTZ, Charles GRIM, George HEISKELL, Robert ANDERSON, William BULL and Mark HAYS. Among them six Germans, who were intimate during the war and until the end of their long lives formed what is know as the Dutch Mess. The six as given by Mr. William GREEWAY RUSSELL, who knew some of them and remembered their quaint anniversaries, when memories of their famous campaigns were fondly recalled, gave the six as consisting of Peter LAUCK, Simon LAUCK, Frederick KURTZ, John SCHULTZ, Charles GRIM and Jacob SPERRY. A descendant of one of them, who has given the subject serious study, gives Adam KURTZ (1747-1815), Peter LAUCK, John W. GRIM (perhaps Charles), Adam HEISKELL, Jacob SPERRY and John SCHULTZ. Adam HEISKELL is buried in Romney, WV. The others rest near the ruins of the old Lutheran Church.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------In addition to Captain Daniel MORGAN the officers were first lieutenant, John HUMPHREY; second lieutenant, Willial HETH; first sergeant, George PORTERFIELD, or Charles PORTERFIELD. To COLONEL DANIEL MORGAN Camp near German Town, August 9, 1777. Sir: You will march to morrow morning the Corps under your Command for Maidenhead in the State of Jersey and there halt till you receive further Orders. You will take every possible care in your power, as well in your march, as during your stay at that place, to restrain every Species of licentiousness in the Soldiery and to prevent them doing the least injury to the Inhabitants or their property, as nothing can be more disserviceable to our cause, or more unworthy the character we possess, to say nothing of the injustice of the measure. I am etc.68 [Note:The draft is in the writing of Robert Hanson Harrison. The letter sent, which is in the New York Public Library, is also in Harrison's writing, and varies from the above in capitalization. To COLONEL DANIEL MORGAN Camp at the Cross Roads, Bucks County, Sunday, 10 o'clock P.M., August 10, 1777. Sir: I have just recd an Express from Philada informing me that a large Fleet was seen off Sinepuxent Inlet on the 7th inst. You are therefore desired to halt wherever this finds you, and wait till we hear further of this matter. Let me know by Return of the Express where you are, that I may know how to direct for when I have occasion to send you Orders. I am, etc. P.S. By ordering you to halt where this shall find you, I mean upon the most convenient ground near the place.78 [Note:The text is from the Magazine of American History , vol. 7, P. 137. ]

    2. Jeanne wrote, >>his great-granddaughter [snip] stated that he was a member of a Pennsylvania regiment and spent the winter with Washington's Army at Valley Forge. No record has shown up yet for his service and he is not listed in the DAR Patriots Index. His son Thomas Lewis, b. 1779 in PA, received a land patent in Indiana in 1829. A grandson was named "James Alpheus Lewis," perhaps a clue that Alpheus enlisted under another name, such as James or John.<< Jeanne is right, no Elpheus/Alpheus Lewis / Louis is on the extracts of rosters for Valley Forge done for the National Park Service, nor listed in the Penna. Archives' extracts from miscellaneous militia rolls, nor on the extracts for Ancestry from the Continental Army rosters in National Archives Micropublication #246. Absence from the DAR Patriots Index only indicates that no woman has successfully applied for membership under the service of a person by this name. Absence from the DAR's and SAR's lists of graves of Revolutionary War soldeirs indicates only that a descendant did not prove service to those organizations' satisfaction, or did not apply at all. The three 1829 land grants in Indiana to persons by the name of Thomas Lewis were by sale of public lands, and had nothing to do with Bounty Land pursuant to Revolutionary War service. No Alpheus Lewis was granted a warrant for such Bounty Land by the Congress or by Virginia. Pennsylvania did not issue bounty land warrants. Congress granted such bounty land to men serving 3 years or more in the Continental Army. No one by this name applied for a pension under Revolutionary War service. Jeanne does not say where and when Alpheus died, but if he died after 1834 or if his widow died after 1835, it is likely that he or she would have applied for a pension if one was due (by that time, available under active service of 9 months or more in miitia, State Troops or Continental Army). Based on the first name of a grandson, Jeanne asserts that Alpheus may have enlisted under another name. It's certainly possible that Alpheus is listed somewhere under a bad misspelling of his name, but with respect to the first name of a grandson, more likely "James" was the name of the grandson's mother's father or a brother or in-law of either parent--or even a close friend/neighbor. The account told by a great-grandchild has had three generations to gain gloss or lose accuracy with each re-telling. Family stories are notoriously unreliable. As an example, a published genealogical and biographical sketch of one family I looked into, as told by a grandson of George X, said that George's name was Jacob and that he came from a part of Pennsylvania that proved to be completely erroneous. Whether the grandson really didn't know the truth, or if the person taking down the information for publication muffed it, will now never be known. Don't forget that the person telling the story for publication also has to go through a writer who may get things wrong and an editor as well. Good hunting, Judy
