    1. [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] LVA index
    2. qvarizona wrote giving the URL of the Library of VA index. The LVA's index for Dunmore's War manuscripts omits all of the militia that set out from Ft. Pitt and all of the PA and northern WV claimants supplying them. Library of VA seems to be harboring historical resentment that WV split away during the Late Wowah, so excludes WV material from its historical stuff whenever possible. I am surprised that they have not expunged land grants in present WV from their land grants index. Maybe just haven't gotten around to it. Judy

    3. Thank you for your enlightening comments. There was a John Gibson at Ft. Pitt., and his brother George went with William Linn and others on the secret mission to Louisiana to get much needed gunpowder from Galvez (? ) The men under George Gibson disguised themselves and made a successful trip, and then returned north via the Mississippi River, while Gibson went back to Virginia by sea. It would help me to know more about Robert Kinkade's family group--whether from PA or VA--if I knew for sure which George Gibson he is referring to in his pension application. I will have to lookup that gunpowder story again. The suggestion that Robert Kinkade was at Ft. Pitt came from Lee Minnis' book about the 1st Virginia Regiment. A Robert Kinkaid is listed on the rolls under Henry Houghland/Hoagland. Daniel Morgan is listed on the rolls for service at Ft. Pitt.also. 2. In a message dated 1/5/2007 11:10:14 PM Eastern Standard Time, Frostfreedet@aol.com writes: A George Gibson was Captain in the 1st Virginia Continental Regiment from at least Feb. 1776, according to Heitman's _Historic Register of Officers_. As a matter of correctness regarding the term "Continental" in regimental designations, only 26 Regiments from the New England states and PA carried the term Continental and only during the time frame 1776-1777. The term was dropped as the Army reorganized in 1777. Virginia regiments of the Continental Line were never designated numbered Continental Regiments, but as numbered regiments of Virginia (e.g., 1st Virginia Regiment) in the/of the Continental Line. During the RW Virginia had both a 1st VA Regiment allocated to the Continental Line and a 1st VA State Regiment which was briefly allocated to the Continental Line. These two regiments were separate entities. Best regards, Hugh

    2. Thanks to Barbara for sharing part of Kinkade's pension application affidavit; she also writes: >>Because he mentioned service under Capt. George Gibson, he may also have been in Dunmore's War at Ft. Pitt in 1774/1775.<< A George Gibson was Captain in the 1st Virginia Continental Regiment from at least Feb. 1776, according to Heitman's _Historic Register of Officers_. This Regiment, recruited under auspices of the Continental Congress, had no organizational relationship with the First Virginia Regiment that existed at the time of Dunmore's War in 1774. The one in existence in 1774 was an army of a British colony. Dunmore's war did not take place at Ft. Pitt, but local militia was gathered there before setting out with Lord Dunmore (other contingents having been sent to perform specific tasks a little before then) for Ohio country. Other units from Botetourt, Fincastle and other counties had set out on a different route, supposed to meet Dunmore with the northern-route group. Part of the groups not with Dunmore are the ones attacked at Point Pleasant. Most of the movements and various activities took place July-October 1774. Fort Pitt was at this time a gathering and provisioning point for the expedition, not a fort under attack. If you have evidence that the First Virginia Regiment (colonial) garrisoned Ft. Pitt ca. 1774-1775, it would be of interest. I have not found a mention of a Capt. George Gibson among the rosters related to Dunmore's War, although there was at least one Private by this name. I transcribed from microfilm at the National Archives, the following 1820 RW pension application of Robert Kinkade, 1742-1832---my gr-gr-gr-grandfather. He served in a number of important battles of the Revolutionary War, and he is mentioned several times in the book "The First Virginia Regiment of Foot, 1775-1783", by M. Lee Minnis. In this book, his name is spelled "Kincaid". Because he mentioned service under Capt. George Gibson, he may also have been in Dunmore's War at Ft. Pitt in 1774/1775. ************************ State of Kentucky Hardin Circuit Ct June Term 1820 Ordered that the following declaration, affadavit, and schedule be admitted to record having been sworn to in open court. Original Claim District of Kentucky Hardin Circuit Is on this 16th day of June 1820 personally app.= and in open court being a court of record for the county and district aforesaid Robert Kinkade aged seventy eight years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of congress of the 18th day of March 1818 and the 1st day of May 1820. That he the said Robert Kinkade enlisted first for the term of one year under Captain George Gibson and joined the first virginia regiment. Then I enlisted for three years under Captain Samuel Crump in Read's regiment. I was detached into Col. Daniel Morgan's rifle Corps in the year 1777 in the state of Virginia and was also detached out of that company into Captain Gabriel Long's company and served in that company until I was discharged which was about august 1779. Then at Genl George Washington's request I took command of a small party to scout on the line! the York state at Fort Montgomery when he was discharged from the said service in 1779 in the state of new Jersey by Peter Mecklenburgh Brigadier General. In the year 1780 I went to sea on board of the state ship Hyderally commanded by Joshua Barney. I was out with commodore Barney until peace was concluded and that he was in the Battles of the first war at the taking of the hessians at Trenton new Jersey then at princeton then at Piscatanay then at the taking of Burgoyne then at the taking of stony point then at Paulus Hook under Colonel Henry Lee. And that he has no other proof except the affadavit of John Howe and Peter Kerlin as follows to wit October 9th 1819 we do hereby certify that sergeant Robert Kinkade now before us is the same we knew and scouted with in Colonel Daniel Morgan's Rifle regiment in the continental Army in the revolutionary wars which regiment was made up out of the states of Pennsylvania and Virginia. The said Kinkade was drafted into William Henderson's company afterwards into Gabriel Long's Company. In said corps he being enlisted for three years during the time of our knowledge with him which was from the spring seventy seven until the year seventy nine we believe was regularly discharged by General Peter Mecklenburg . During the time in acquaintance with him we can say he behaved himself as an orderly obedient good soldier and deserves the countenance(?) of his country. Given from under our hands this day and year above written. The list was most generously compiled by John K. Robertson and Bob McDonald, and posted on their wonderful web site for the common good. http://www.revwar75.com/ob/m246.htm You can borrow the microfilm by inter-library loan, or purchase a copy of the microfilm roll directly from the National Archives. 3. To Harper Researchers: If anyone has early history about Harper's Ferry I would appreciate your help at looking to see if you have information about the grist mill which was part of the area around the ferry. My family tradition is that my Revolutionary War ancestor, robert John Eager (or John Robert Eager or Ager) operated the grist mill until he enlisted in military service in Dec. 1776 in Col. James Wood's 12th Virginia. He died of wounds received in battle in 1778 so any information about the grist mill would be prior to 1776. Thanks for any assistance or suggestions, George Patrick
