I work for a documentary film company based in Toronto. We specialize in history/genealogy documentaries and are developing a series of films on historic American conflicts and the descendants of people involved. We have just completed a series here in Toronto for History Television Canada, which explores the history of certain conflicts within Canada, through the personal stories of the characters involved and their descendants. We followed the descendants embarking upon 'quests' to find out more about their ancestors and the historic event, which brought them into contact with other descendants of people similarly involved in that moment in time. The loose premise was that the meeting of descendants of two people who fought together/against each other might be able to answer certain questions about the events as a whole. The films were about oral histories, family stories and bringing the history to life, grounding it in the present day. Some of the conflicts we are hoping to pull interesting stories from and trace descendants for include the Revolutionary war and the Civil War. We are looking for poignant, personal stories perhaps with an element of mystery which could be presented as some sort of 'quest'. Anyone with any interest into a mysterious aspect of/question about their ancestor's involvement in the Revolutionary War please do get in touch! Where is Point Pleasant? Speaking of lists, does anyone know where to find a list in specific of the casualties during the battle (1st) for Fort Ticonderoga, (NY) in the French Indian/Seven Year War? Assistance appreciated in advance.
Don, In addition to developing the alpha listing of those who participated in the battles of Saratoga on the Internet, I'm developing a T/O by regiment off-line. I'm up to the S's with this project. Attached is the NY 4th regt. members who were at Saratoga. Some of these go back to Nov.-Dec 1776 and may be members of the earlier 4th regt. Also, attached find T/O of NY 2nd regt., also referred to as the Canadian Regt. - may also include some earlier members of the 4th. Frank Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2007 14:36:04 -0500 From: "Donald L. Springer" <springerdl@acsworld.com> Subject: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] NY 4th regiment, continental line, 1775 To: american-revolution@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <45C78724.9090800@acsworld.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Can anyone point me to one or more sources for info regarding the original NY 4th regiment. It was commanded by a Col. James Holmes and only lasted from about mid 1775 to mid 1776. It apparently saw action at Ft. Ticondaroga in the winter of 1775 and headed for Quebec afterwards. The unit ended up being dissolved in 1776 and absorbed into new units in that year. The reason for the break up of the original unit was that most enlistment's at that time were for only 6 months. Some went home, others stayed on with the unit headed for Quebec. I need some sort of documentation, i.e.: muster rolls, pay roll lists or something identifying the individuals in the unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, DLS Livingston, Henry B. Colonel NY 4th regt. DeRoussi, Pierre Lt. Does anyone know where to find a list of the names inscribed on the monument at Point Pleasant? Any help is much appreciated.
Patti, At the end of this document is a list of men you are asking about. GeorgeBATTLE OF POINT PLEASANT--A CLAIM FOR UNHERALDED PATRIOTS (Senate - November 01, 1991) [Page: S15798] Mr. BYRD. Mr. President, I ask my colleagues to join me today in remembering those whom many believe to be the first military veterans in our Nation's history. I am speaking of the militiamen of the Battle of Point Pleasant, a battle waged in my home State of West Virginia--at that time, Virginia--and officially recognized in 1908 by the 60th Congress as the First Battle of the Revolutionary War. On October 10, 1774--6 months before the `shots heard 'round the world' were fired at Lexington and Concord--800 rugged colonial militiamen, under the command of Col. Andrew Lewis, met and defeated 1,000 Shawnee Indians commanded by Chief Cornstalk at the confluence of the Ohio and Great Kanawha Rivers. If the Shawnees had claimed victory, an alliance with the British may have developed and weakened the position of the colonists. However, the colonists' defeat of the Shawnees demonstrated their military potential and strengthened their stance of independence from official British colonial policy. The battle and the subsequent peace treaty with the Indians brought relative peace to the Ohio frontier for several years and opened the way for further westward movement by American settlers into the Midwest. But most importantly, it freed the American patriots from having to fear a rearguard Indian attack on the Virginia frontier as the rebellious colonies struggled for their liberty against the King's soldiers during the Revolutionary War. At the Battle of Point Pleasant, our forefathers took a bold and courageous step toward securing freedom and asserting their independence. The service of these militiamen was a true pledge of allegiance to liberty and self-government and I take pride in honoring the forgotten men who helped shape the destiny of our Nation. I ask unanimous consent that the list of names of those who fell in battle and were buried at `the Point' on October 11, 1774, be printed in the Record. There being no objection, the list was ordered to be printed in the Record, as follows: Names for Temporary Grave Markers 1. There would probably also be material on the early 4th NY among the miscellaneous papers that are not so handily organized, that you'd want to take a look at where all the microfilm is available--at the National Archives. Can anyone point me to one or more sources for info regarding the original NY 4th regiment. Thank you, DLS

In 1775 the French foreign minister sent a spy to London to investigate the quarrel between the English colonies in North America and England. That spy met with several American representatives, including Silas Deane and Arthur Lee, who sought French aid to the American revolutionaries. The spy returned to France and wrote a memoire recommending that France establish a trading company whose overt purpose was to trade with France's colonies in the West Indies but whose real purpose was to supply arms and ammunition to the American revolutionaries. The spy's name was Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais who is more famous to us as a playwright. He is the author of The Barber of Seville and the Marriage of Figaro. The latter play was so popular that it was quickly turned into an opera by Mozart. Beaumarchais established a trading company called Rodrigue Hortalez et Cie on the rue Vielle du Temple in Paris. Long before Franklin secured overt French aid to the American Revolution, Beaumarchais had as many as 47 ships plying the Atlantic sending guns, cannons, and gunpowder to the Americans. Ninety percent of the gunpowder used by the Americans was supplied by France and other foreign sources. Beaumarchais believed in liberty but he also saw this as an opportunity to make money. Unfortunately, he never received any payment from the Americans. Deane had promised that he would be paid in money or in kind. See James Potts book "French Covert Action in the American Revolution". I stand corrected, and, enlightened --I think. But, between the two of us I hope we gave a few folks a new place to start looking for those elusive ancestors? Thanks. This brief article by John Allen Miller entitled "The Flying Camp Battalion" explains a little of how the original parts of Maryland which later became part of Va, Pa, De were organized at the beginning of The Revolutionary War. One example is Berkeley County which was in Frederick, Maryland at the beginning of the revolution which results in early Daniel Morgan information being filed in Maryland? This article does discuss some of the very early Virginia Rev. War units and how they came about. It may help to find records of indivuals who might be recorded in some other unit or place? There was an Amos Hadley, according to the NH State Papers Vol #15 pg. 116, who served in the Revolutionary War. This Amos served under the command of Lieu Col Moses Kelly whose company was from Goffstown, NH and the surrounding towns. He enlisted July 1,1777 and was discharged July 5, 1777 as were all the members of this company. I have in my line an Amos Hadley who lived in Dunbarton, NH, an adjacent town to Goffstown. How do I go about proving or disproving the Amos Hadley that served in the Revolutionary was the same Amos Hadley from the adjacent town of Dunbarton? James R. Hi, Only one troop from the 3rd VA is listed on the muster roll for VF, a paymaster. Yet presumably the regiment participated in the battle of Brandywine which I think occurred just before the quartering at VF. Did the regiment or one into which the 3rd VA had recently combined go elsewhere after Brandywine, etc.? Did essentially no one from the 2nd or 3rd VA go into bivouac at the Forge? Thanks. Pat, Sorry, we do not know which county...that's the frustrating thing about finding the family. We only know that Marmaduke removed to Bedford Co., TN c1800-1810. If he removed with parents or siblings, we can only venture to guess. There are other Mitchell's living in Bedford Co. circa his removal to TN....we cannot tie them to M.D. at this time. Our intent is to research all the Mitchell's from NC hoping to find a clue. Is the NC DAR index on-line? Which resource[s] would one recommend to locate indexed sons of RW soldiers? Working under the assumption that the unknown father of our Marmaduke D.
