Thank you so much. As you probably gathered, it is not my website. I merely post things I find for the benefit of those researching their ancestors. Janice Farnsworth

In reviewing my notes, I'm reminded of the importance of land and its role in our Revolution. The following is taken from a book I heartily recommend for both its narration and illustration. For those of almost any age, this book is an ideal introduction to and overview of the history of the American struggle for liberty. Anne The Revolution American Heritage, p 74-5 Land for the taking up As long as anyone could remember, men in England's colonies had waited for the day when the French would be driven out of America, making available those limitless lands that stretched beyond the Alleghenies. In Europe, no matter where a man hd lived, land had been tightly held for generations, and what might be bought was at a price few could afford. The deep-seated hunger for property had driven many a family over thousands of perilous miles to America, where even the poorest might eventually claim their own piece of ground. Cheap land in the back country was the way to wealth and prestige, and after 1763 its supply seemed limited only by the distant horizon. All a man needed was courage, enterprise, and a strong back; and between 1765 and 1768 narly 30,000 of them headed west, pouring over the Appalachians' crest in search of the future. Caption, p 74: In 1763 George II's decree that Americans were not to settle beyond the headwaters of rivers emptying into the Atlantic met with angry protest. Then land-hungry pioneers simply brushed aside the edict and headed for the forbidden ground, following Daniel Boone's trail through Cumberland Gap.... Caption, p 75: An ever-increasing number of emigrants moved along the "Great Philadelphia Wagon Road" and other trails leading west, filling the Appalachian slopes and turning arable wilds into prosperous farms.... Back to main narrative: When John Finlay and his followers plunged into the "Dark and Bloody Ground" of modern Kentucky, the news created greater excitement among the people of Carolina, one historian noted, than the report of Columbus' discovery had aroused at the Court of Spain. In Finlay's footsteps came Daniel Boone, and behind him, waves of new settlers from Maryland and Virginia. >From the Watauga River in North Carolina to the upper Ohio, the woodman's axe was hewing a new kind of society where opportunity, as well as land, was there for all who would seek it. "Scarcely a shoemaker, a joiner, or silversmith but quits his trade," Governor John Wentworth of New Hampshire wrote in 1768, "as soon as he can get able to buy a little tract of land and build a cottage in the wilderness." Every colony's economy rested on an agrarian base, and eight out of ten men made their living from the soil. Even those whose livelihood came from other pursuits made part-time use of the soil, or speculated in the "wild lands" of the West. Before the Revolution only five cities numbered over 8,000 people, and these centers contained less than five per cent of the entire population. Land was wealth, but it was more, as Hector St. John de Crevecoeur observed. Land "has established all our rights; on it is founded our rank, our freedom, our power as citizens." Transcribed by Anne Sennish from The Revolution, by the Editors of American Heritage. New York: 1958, American Heritage Publishing Co., Inc. Editor in Charge: Richard M. Ketchum. Narrative by Bruce Lancaster. Introduction by Bruce Catton.

This is a reminder that virus-related messages (or responses to same) are unwelcome on this mailing list. There is only one virus-warning that serves any purpose in preventing the spread of viruses: Each computer user is *personally responsible* for keeping their own computer protected with current, up-to-date anti-virus software. If you are negligent enough to get your computer infected, it serves no purpose to send a message (possibly infected) to everyone you know. What you need to do is take steps to get your computer (first) un-infected, then (second) protected. If your computer is protected and it "looks-like" you have a virus, your first order of business is to check the possibility that you have received a hoax. If you do not know where to go for help in the above, just go to google.com and search for anti-virus or hoax, and it will show you all the places. John Robertson List manager

If anyone has ever gotten more from NARA via a $37 pension request than is contained on the Microfilm series M804, please speak up. So far, all the anecdotal evidence that I've gathered says the film has all that NARA sends, and you are not guaranteed getting everything on the film when you send in a request. If that is true, then the *only* way to do it is to buy/rent the film. [The film can be purchased for $25 + tax through http://www2.heritagequest.com/qsearch/sr1.asp?s=M804 members can rent for $3.50 or buy at a discount] I just went through a reel [my first look at Rev-war pensions] of JENNINGS [George-William]. A few things popped out at me after I got done indexing them. I have no idea if these JENNINGS folks were typical. Summary of Reel M804-1413 33 Names 6 are single page Land Bounty Warrant pointers- no info The remaining files average 34 pages each Largest file is 96pps - there is only one with less than 10 pps. Only about a third were applying from the same state that they enlisted in. Many went from CT to NY.[one gave all his addresses since the war which included a 15 yr move to NY before he went back to CT] A few went from southern states to KY or TN. Only a few name children; 11 name wives, 7 use maiden names. The earliest birthyear that I've sorted out yet is 1752-- the latest is 1765. [I haven't read the southern pensions, or a couple of the very difficult to read ones] This reminded me how sad it is that many of the older soldiers didn't survive long enough to get registered on film--- and that we need to remember the war lasted until 1783. This was encouraging enough that I'm going to order the preceding reel to follow up on the JENNINGS folks before George, who started this reel. I'm most interested in Justus JENNINGS whose file was only 11 pages long, but he was a deponent on one of the William JENNINGS pensions, and said more about his service while supporting his brother/cousin's claim than he did in his own application. Jim
I just had to share this one. Some folks have all the luck. I just started studying the JENNINGS pension applications on M804-1413 to see if some relative of my Justus had more than his 10 pages of sketchy info. In the file of Peter JENNINGS, I first came across a typed page by the pension bureau dated Jan 22, 1897 that outlined Peter's service. Later on in the file is the note that prompted the reply. It looks like a postcard sized sheet of paper; South Port Conn. Jan 3d 1897 Pension Bureau Gentlemen, Please send me the record of Peter Jennings a pensioner of the Amer- ican Revolution at Fairfield, Fairfield Co. Conn. You will do me a great favor to send immediately as my daughter wishes to join the D.A.R. before the 10th inst. Very Resp. W.C. Jennings ***** I hope his disappointment in not getting the response for *3 weeks* was mitigated by the info it provided.<g> Jim

When asked about the delicious tea, Mrs. Adams says her "sweetheart" sent it to her. This is the only mention I can find that Samuel Adams is away. Very interesting. Abigail didn't realize until later that John had sent her tea [via Elbridge Gerry who seems to have gotten the wrong Mrs. Adams]. I see letters from Samuel Adams datelined Philadelphia in July 1776, New York in August, Boston in September and Philadelphia again in October. That is interesting, now that you mention it, that Samuel appeared to be in the area when Abigail noted the mixup on the tea. Gerry might have beat him home by a few days-- but the Abigail letter is the 9th of Sept and Samuel writes to John Adams on the 16th from Boston. Jim
This Samuel Adams died 1847 Samuel Adams born June 24, 1762 died September 15, 1847 Samuel Adams was born in Boston, Massachusetts June 24,1762. He was baptized in the Old North Church, Boston's second church, in which were hung the lanterns that signaled to Charlestown patriots that Paul Revere had started his famous ride on April 18, 1775. When Samuel was old enough he was apprenticed to one Joseph Howard of Concord, apparently a housewright, and lived while learning the Adams Trade, at the Concord suburb of Acton. From there when he had just turned fourteen, young Samuel enlisted as a Mariner aboard the Privateer Ship "Boston." This was in the fall of the year 1776. http://www.isomedia.com/homes/krhodes/stories/sam_adams.htm
Thank you for the clarification. I thought I was having another 'senior moment' Happy New Year! Margaret
Samuel Adams enlisted as a Mariner aboard the Privateer Ship "Boston." This was in the fall of the year 1776. The ship "Boston" was of 400 tons, carried 22 guns and had a compliment of 210 men, quite a good sized vessel of the day. She was commanded by William Brown of Lincoln, Middlesex county, Mass. The Independent Chronicle, March 6, 1777 states; "Captain Brown, in the Privateer Boston, of this port, has taken and sent into North Carolina a ship and schooner from Guinea with Negroes, bound to the West Indies; many of the poor slaves perished soon after their arrival." Boston Gazette, March 31, 1777; " Tuesday, the privateer ship Boston, commanded by Capt. John Brown, returned into port; during her cruise she has taken six prizes, all of which are arrived in safe ports." (In the prize list published in the Gazette of April 7, 1777, the Captains name is given as William Brown). Sam had enlisted for six months and a very eventful and exciting time it must have been. How he fared in the prize money is not known but the practice used was that each member of the crew shared in proportion to his responsibility, of course the owners of the vessel and the Master and Bondsmen were first served. http://www.isomedia.com/homes/krhodes/stories/sam_adams.htm
