Much of what you see there will be in your mind's eye as you imagine the consternation of the Brits waking up to find Henry Knox's big guns (drug all the way from Fort Ti ) bearing down on them. Those cannons so placed resulted in the Brits pulling out of Boston harbor for good (ending Boston's active partication in the fighting war after what, 8 months?) The big guns would have been pointed at what now (regrettably) are the windows of South Boston High School. It'll take some map work, but I considered the effort worthwhile. I think I recall that NPS personnel are there on weekends to answer questions. > I know there are a great many things to see in that area, but we'll be > short on time for this trip.... just the cream of the crop spots, so to speak. On my last trip to Boston (8-01), I took in Minute Man Park (Lexington/Concord), Dorchester Heights, and *attempted* to locate the actual site of the Boston Tea Party (the single event most identifiable as the first domino falling to lead to the closing of the Boston harbor and the fighting war of the Revolution). I never found the BTP actual site during the trip but later resolved its location. Don't believe a word of the hoopla put out for tourist consumption in the area. For more than you'd want to know on the site of the BTP, go to http://jrshelby.com/btp/index.htm Since making this page, I have learned from a credible authority that the site I marked as being the actual site of the BTP is about 20 yards or so to the west of the actual site. The actual site is in what was (and may still be) a vacant lot. John Robertson
I am researching a person who had service time in the American Revolution of 3 months. Can someone tell me if this 3 month length of service time would have qualified him for a pension? Thanks... Tom Sisolak Fort Worth, Texas
Good morning, everyone! Over a year ago a subscriber (wasn't it you, John Robertson?) posted a wonderful message about his recent visit with his grandson to the Bunker Hill Monument. I so appreciated the sharing of that experience...(Thanks again!) In fact, it would be great to read others' posts about their visits to various sites relevant to the American War for Independence. Moving on... we're trying to plan a short trip to the Boston area. The targets are Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill. Does anyone have advice on where to stay and eat (economically) and what other spots are not-to-be-missed on a short trip? Is there anything to see at Dorchester Heights for example? I know there are a great many things to see in that area, but we'll be short on time for this trip.... just the cream of the crop spots, so to speak. Thanks in advance! Best wishes, Susan
Greetings, John ... I had viewed with interest your BTP info. I would appreciate the update you have to the location. A big question ... during your research, did you find any research/documentation done on the ownership of that site? I ask because I am awaiting smail from Canada of papers which indicate a shared inheritance to the 'T-Wharf' in Boston; circa 1887 at $1.4 million. The original property was an Englishman, Edward Love who returned to England leaving wife and daughter behind; they went to NB, then NS. The surnames involved are Love, Clark(e), and Brown in 1887. Any insight much appreciated. Thank you for your time, Jan John Robertson wrote: <snip> > On my last trip to Boston (8-01), I took in Minute Man Park > (Lexington/Concord), Dorchester Heights, and *attempted* to locate the > actual site of the Boston Tea Party (the single event most identifiable as > the first domino falling to lead to the closing of the Boston harbor and > the fighting war of the Revolution). > <snip> > I never found the BTP actual site during the trip but later resolved its > location. To the several kind souls who answered my query as to my g uncle's membership in the SAR...I checked my file for additional info and this is what I found. The obit of 1951 definitely reads Sons of the American Revolution..as I mentioned they cannot find him on their membership list. Quite sure the Patriot he registered through was not KENNON..as his father was born in England. His Mothers' side included..HALL, BROOKS and PALMER, most likely all from CT. Dr. KENNON;s wifes gg grandfather, Alexander HUNTER served in the Revolution so he could have registered (?) through him. Thanks again all! Charlie Hunter
Remember there are two organizations. The Sons of the Revolution and The Sons of the American Revolution. Check with both organizations. About a year ago I found am obit of my great uncle Dr. Charles E.V. Kennon who died in 1951. Born in CT. but for most of his adult life lived in Providence, R.I. It stated he was a member of the R.I. Historical Society and the SAR. His membership in the RIHS was proven BUT when I asked SAR particulars (with a $5 fee) they denied he was a member. I have a feeling the clerk who did the lookup was having a bad day and wasn't doing their job. Is there anyone on this list who possibly has the records to re-check this for me..it would be appreciated. Thanks Charlie Hunter cfhhch2@webtv.net

The NARA site below can help you identify the correct film roll(s) based on the State and Regiment they served in. There are regional NARA sites that will have the complete Rev War rolls. I found the complete set(s) at the Dallas Public Library and by looking through everything they had located many more records that the NARA didn't send me with I applied for their records in DC. The various muster rolls of each Capt. aren't indexed by man only by Regiment so you will have to look at each muster roll to see if your guy is listed. If you live in a major city call the genealogy section of the library to see what they have. Dear All: There is a DAR message board here at Rootsweb. They will do free lookups for anyone. In the case below regarding Edward Mills, they would give you the references that you need in order to proceed. You can thence refer to that item and don't need all the certified certificates since they already have them. Post your inquiry on the DAR board here and you will have the reference back in 24 hours.
