This is really good advice. There are a number of types of War effort services performed by a Patirot that allows a descendant to join the DAR or SAR. Carol > >
Same here...I think there are many for whom 'DAR' membership has not been applied. I was lucky enough to find my James Sheldon from the PA Archives site. I noted the query re where a Rev. War pension might be other than NARA. I found that most of my ancestors in that war were in the local state militas. I wrote to NARA first and was advised my ancestor did not appear in their records, so I should try the state. The state (NJ) had the military record. I paid a small fee (this was back in the early 1980's) and got the military record. How I did find out if the ancestor was in the Rev. War? Thru the DAR's Patriot's List. It gave me his full name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, and his wife's name with maiden name. I nailed him because of her unusual first name. It couldn't be anyone else. Remember, lots of ancestors in the Rev. War never saw military service. They signed a petition, they gave money and aid to the War effort, they were a local constable, etc. , You need to check with the NSDAR re this because their records will indicate what kind of service your ancestor performed. Good luck, Annie
Hi Peg, The rules and regulations as far as militias went varied state by state, the militia was a state agency, so you need to check the state where your ancestor lived. In Pa. people were required to serve, everyone between 18 and 53, but they could pay a fine if they objected to serving, the money would be used to hire a substitute. This would probably be the case if he were a loyalist or if he objected for religious reasons. If your ancestors just happen to have been in Pa. then you can check the printed Pa. Archives, 5th and 6th series. The index for the 5th series is in the 6th series, the index for the 6th series is the 7th series. If you live in Pa. they you should find them at any library, if you don't live in Pa. then check at a university library, they often have them as part of their history collection. Dear Listers, Were all males required to serve during the Rev. in some capacity if they were not Loyalists ? When searching for service records on ancestors from families who definitely resided in the colonies, some seem to have just disappeared as no records can be found. Where would the best source be located other than the NARA for service or pension applications? Could a man get a sub? Who would that be if all were required to serve? Your comments would be appreciated. Peg
Here's the source info from which I got the GAMBALL: Collections of Historical Society of SC p.51 and others F 266 S51 v.2 Journal of Council of Safety was the section in the book where I found Capt. Joseph GAMBALL master of the schooner Polly was delivering gunpowder from Edisto Tucker's Island/ Tucker's Creek to Philadelphia to the South Carolina Delegates. There were Catawba words and phrases and records fromLondon also in the little book...I guess the reason I got interested was because of some land records that mentioned my husband's GAMBRELL family's property in SC upstate and Savannah River... in my mind Edisto Island in SC wasn't all that far from Savannah River and I hoped to find some connection between the families of Joseph GAMBALL and John GAMBRELL. John served in some capacity- as a spy or scout even though he had some disablility...I would send those notes on land along to the REV list also but the land transactions are after 1776 so I suppose they are not really appropriate to the Revolution list. I have been following the questions and responce to Kristie as I was wondering the same thing. I would like to find the Revolutionary Pension of Sgt. Dolly -- Doubtless you found this reference in NDAR I:932, 953 with the name given only in the first citatation (19 July 1775). I suspect he is Captain Joseph Gamble of Philadelphia [see: NDAR 2:105, 405, 558; 6:186; 9:721-2] I would speculate that Contenental Navy Lieutenant / Pennsysvannia Captain William Gamble is related. There are a few references to "Captain Gamble" where the editor/indexers of the NDARs have inserted (in square brackets [ ]) the name William but the correct insertion might be Joseph. Key to my assumption that Joseph Gamball and Joseph Gamble are one and the same man is the covering letter [NDAR 1:932] which describes the gunpowder being loaded onto the Philadelphia Pilot Boat. Joseph Gamble was one of the Philadelphia pilots as is documented in the other citations. Shooting in the dark -- you also may want to try: John W. I am researching the FORD Family of Kent County, Delaware. The Index to Revolutionary War Service Records lists a Reuben FORD in Haslet's Delaware Regiment. Can anyone provide information about Haslet's regiment? I'm also interested in any information about Reuben Ford - I believe he died in 1825 in Kenton, DE. Many thanks, Joy
Yesterday I was at the Swem Library in Williamsburg- first time there where I found reference to Joseph GAMBALL master of the scooner (sic) Polly 1775; has anyone information on this man's family- he was quite busy running gunpowder from Edisto to Philadelphia. The items I read were full of his work but I just wondered if he fell into GAMBLE GAMBRELL GAMBILL families anywhere. I have a Revolutionary John GAMBLE in South Carolina; my husband descends from a Revolutionary John GAMBRELL for whom we have no parents' names and there are many who say our SC Gambrells were originally the GAMBILLs from VA. GAMBALLs and variations are always of interest to me- especially before the Revolution. Diane "Dolly" Stratton Gambrell

Dear Kristie, What do you mean by "an 8 page Declaration paper"? Regards, Margaret

I need to order an 8 page Declaration for my 4th great grandfather. I have all the information I need included the File number but I am not sure which form to use when ordering. Need to know what form to request and does it cost to request the form or only the fee when I send the form back in. Kristie Setser
I obtained some catalogs from some private auctions. These sales are from a year ago. If genealogy doesn't run through your body, then you will not have any appreciation for this. My blood drained at the huge amount of documents, pictures and etc. that were listed. These are from private collections and went into private collections. 1837 26 letters and assorted papers from 1870'-80's for the Haywood family ND 1837 Bastard Bond from Washington Co., TN Deeds 1775 Judgment against Alexander McCulloch by Robert Alexander, Salisbury, NC 1842 Slave Time Receipt 1864 Colored Troops' Ordnance Fort Smith, AR 1837 Documents Removal of 582 Chickaw Indians This is from only a couple of pages, just another source to look for. Looking for ideas as to how to find out more about Captain Thomas Ewell of Virginia who fought at the Battle of Monmouth. Captain Ewell is mentioned in a pension application of another soldier, but we have no Rev War record of him in Prince William County, VA (where he settled after the war.) Most of our Rev War records were destroyed during the subsequent "revolution." Thanks for your thoughts.
