If you are talking about Daniel Morgan of Virginia, he was captured by the British at Quebec and was a prisoner of war for a while. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Carr [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 9:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AMER-REV] Fort Pitt Pardon me for interjecting myself into this conversation, but I'm in the (Saratoga) area and have some background on what happened up here. I was doing lookups the other day and found mention that Col Phillip Alston of NC (one of my collateral lines) was taken prisoner during the Rev. War. Did not have that info. Hi Frank: I was interested when you said you work on Saratoga. In the 1770s in an adjoining county to this one a guy was brought before the court for being a tory. It was charged that he had got drunk and said "All the American Army ever did was take Burgoyne and that was by accident!". Do you have any idea what he meant by a statement like that? I can send the reference if you want it. What is the address of your web site? I have little to go on, and it is from another researcher. 28 Dec. 1778, John Thorn of Surry Co. Va. dies in Rev. Army. His widow Martha had 4 children. 28 Dec. 1778 Surrey Rev. Militia. Certificate that Mildred Williams is widow of Lewis Williams, a soldier who died in service, leaving her five small chileren. SAME AS TO MARTHA, WIDOW OF JOHN THORN, WHO DIED IN SERVICE LEAVING HER FOUR CHILDREN. Does anyone know whether the names of children were ever listed in any records? Thanks for any help or pointers as to where I may look will be appreciated. Til next time, Joanne Yeager Thorne
Pensions are definitely great leads. Interestingly enough sometimes it is things said in passing that are the best. My uncle Adam Bush gave testimony for a pension in 1832. No contemporary record of the service he claimed has been found, however. This does not mean that he did not serve as in the 1770s this area was a war zone and the records are sketchy. Hence my work trying to reconstruct them. But I digress. My other uncle, Adam Flesher testified to Adam Bush's service and in the deposition he stated that Bush was his (Flesher's) uncle. Since that information would in no way further Bush's entitlement to a pension there would be no motive to lie and that tied together some loose ends in the family in PA before they came out here. Wow, I didn't know all that about the lost pensions. I might add one thing - a pension claim (i, e. Kathy, Is it possible that your William is the one listed below that had a will probated in 1796? Just FYI, there were degrees of Revolutionary pensioners: invalid soldiers passed pensions 1776; half pay pensioners (if served longer they would receive half pay for life) passed 1778, widows and orphan pensions 1780; the first pension act for "service in the Rev War" was passed in 1818, but because of fraud, a stricter pension act was passed in 1832. So...the William listed below did not live long enough to obtain or apply for a pension. It sounds like his heirs did so in his name but were denied. This William might have been receiving a "half pay." That would explain not pension record being found. I found these situations on the internet by typing in "William Brinkley" + war, and with advanced search added the word revolutionary. These all need to be verified, but one does list Gladys EARLY VIRGINIA (Nansemond Area) AND NORTH CAROLINA BRINKLEY NOTES (1600s & 1700s) Jan,1998. Leanne Dooley, [email protected] 1796 Halifax Co, NC Wm Brinkley leaves will mentioning, Hunt, Charity, Wm. Rejected) 1797 Halifax Co, NC Will of William Brinkley mentions William, Abraham and Tabitha http://members.tripod.com/~tawshasgenealogy/timelinea.html THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO THE STATE 0F NO. > That would explain not pension record being > found. I think I missed the beginning of this thread, so if I'm repeating info, I apologize in advance. The usual reason a pension isn't found is because most pension records have been long ago destroyed. Most of the records of the American Army in the custody of the War Department were destroyed by fire on November 8, 1800. When the British burned Washington in 1814 most of the remainder were destroyed. It wasn't until 1873 the Army started collecting the surviving records, which were by then scattered among several government agencies, and it wasn't until 1889 that the Army started a pension and record division, and not until 1892 that Congress gave them any money for record keeping. Hi, Would be Nicholas or William Nicholas Briskey/Brisky/Brisque/Briscoe. And his brother Charles. French officers who came in and decided to stay and changed and fought with the American Army. Could even have been La Briskey/La Brisky. Any help appreciated. Being disabled can't really afford to hire someone or I would.
