My mama said we had a McPherson in our family but I always thought she confused it with a McClelland the most recent of whom I have found. Our Rosalie Rebecca McClelland had MAYRANT / ROBINSON / NORVELL / NELSON / NESMITH / GAMBLE / DAVIS / EDGAR ancestry. Some of these were Scottish who came first to Monmouth NJ then moved to the area of South Carolina near Williamsburg County / Black River Georgetown... she 10 generations back. Anyway our most recent Burton was Sarah who married a POTTS; according to a Potts researcher many in the families move together to Winston County Mississippi. My Rosa McClelland comes back to SC and marries in Sumter; their child my grandmother's ancestor was born in Reconstruction era Charleston. Dolly

    3. Hugh thanks for the info on the 14th VA. Your first post matches what I have. Where the water gets murky is in 1781 when Von Steuben sent the new recruits to Albemarle Old Courthouse to be equipped, clothed, and "sized", they were designated in the size roll as the 14th VA. I know for a fact that some of them were not in the old 14th VA as several were from the Culpeper militia and had been sized there. Based on my conversation with Vince at the VA State library nobody has noticed this 1781 14th. The article you sent in your second post is fantastic! Thanks so much! 3. Joy wrote: ">>The approved DAR service (Nov 13, 2000) is Augusta Co, Virginia Militia, >>appointed Adjutant October 29, 1778. Oath as Ensign June 20, 1781" Hi Joy: Wow. Did I write that? It is not what I recall, but I don't have my article handy. At any rate the Oct 1778 LT is the wrong guy. Notice on the Oct 1778 appointment from the others involved that this was for a company at Bluegrass in (now Highland) County, VA., and is for the nephew Henry instead of Weston Henry. It is impossible to tell which one the 1781ensign qualification is but somebody got demoted. The RIGHT one for Weston Henry is August 19, 1778 Henry Flesher 2nd Lt in William Lowther's company. This particular part contradicts my article but I did not have the knowledge of militia in general then that I have now. The date of this matching exactly the last day that nephew Henry left Bowyer's 12th Virginia was what threw me off, if you look at the article. A WHOPPING coincidence but I now believe a coincidence in fact. I'll have to get my article out and look at it again. I know it needs updating. The frustrating thing is after 75 years the DAR STILL doesn't have Weston Henry fixed and are claiming service (the October appointment in McCoy's Co.) for his descendants that rightly belongs to the descendants of the Pendleton County man. Perhaps I am partly culpable for this. Likely too late to get it fixed? It is this type of thing that makes genealogy so distasteful. We are beating our heads against a brick wall and the wall is winning! Oh well, I'll buy a helmet. Please keep me in the loop on the monument placing. I also have complete and extensive information on Henry Jr son of Weston Henry that will update (correctly I promise <grin>) much of what has been published about him. If you want I will write something up. It is really needed. Maybe for HCJ? Keep in touch. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV

    3. I am flattered that you looked at my article. I am embarassed however that I need to write an update or a retraction to that piece. In it I said that (as Ben Mitchell beleived) Henry was never in the service and the one in Lowther's Company was the nephew. I also said in the article that I did not understand the mechanics of that. I have learned much more about the mechanics of militia operations and now am convinced that my first (pre Benny) instinct was right - Weston Henry Flesher was in Lowther's Company. I don't know what they accepted from Christina. But I'll send you everything I know and the marker people can do what they want with it. Thanks for your continued work on memorializing Henry. 3. Hi Warren: Thank you so much fo rthe obit. I don't know what will eventually become of my research but I do plan a detailed article about the tory uprising at Brake in Hardy County. That was NOT a misunderstanding over taxes, although for political expedience Daniel Morgan recommended that the state accept that. Much like trying to get the Sunnis to come to the table in Iraq - yeah, we hate them but no we don't want them for enemies. Brake was a full blown Tory who meant to hook up with Cornwallis had the good general's military invasion been more successful. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV

    1. Flesher again
    2. David Armstrong
    3. Ooops! My mail box re-set itself for HTML. Hopefully I have fixed it, so I am sending this message again. The local paper announced today that the Lewis County chapter of the DAR will honor my ancestor, Henry Flesher with a monument on the Lewis County courthouse lawn, to be placed in March or April of 2006. I have not seen the marker but Flesher came to the site of Weston in 1776 and apparently was 2nd Lt. in William Lowther's Company of militia in 1778. He was also at Buckhannon and Richards Forts, and according to local tradition stayed at his settlement through the whole war, never evacuating across the mountains. His nephew Henry Flesher II was in Michael Bowyer's Company in the 12th VA Continentals and testified to this in the 1820s in Pendleton County where by that time he (Henry II) was a major in the militia. Apparently BOTH uncle and nephew served on the West Fork as the nephew was in John McCoy's company, and made entry for a tract of land next to Lowther's at today's Jane Lew, WV. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV

Several of the suspended pensioners claimed service with > Clark. The scandal Joy refers to is the "Speculating Gentry" that I posted a mention of a while back. People making money faking pension claims for old pioneers whether or not they were in the service. Joy, the Calrk papers are searchable. You will find lots of neat stuff like mention of Zack Morgan, Jacob Westfall, William Lowther, John Hardin, George Jackson, etc. and others of our common interest. Contact me backchannel and tell me what you find that you like. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV
