Janet -- >>> Can anyone tell me about the Ship Defence which was used in the >>> Revolutionary War? <<<< "Defence" was a very, very common name for an American vessel and they came in all sizes from armed rowboats to full-rigged ships. When you match a Capt George Cook with the ship "Defence" you end up with the Maryland Navy ship of that name. There is a muster roll for this ship dated 19 Sep 1776 in _Naval Documents of the American Revolution_, [NDARs]vol. 6, pp. 905-907. The original is at the Maryland Historical Society (Revolutionary Collection, Ms 1814). Cook commanded about a year and the crew numbered around 150 men. You should be able to find a set of NDARs at a major municiple or university library. Ten volumes covering Dec 1775 to Dec 1777 have been published by the US Navy History Center to date and Vol. 11, covering 01 Jan to 31 Mar 1777 has a tentative GPO release date of 19 July 2005. The two officers who wrote the above letters served with the Army of Tennessee from its first organization by Sidney Johnston at Corinth, as the Army of the Mississippi, to the fall of Atlanta under Hood; and one of them to the close of the war. They were competent to pronounce judgment on the condition of that army at different periods, and their testimony respecting it at the time of Johnston's retirement is absolutely true. The Military Annals of Tennessee Confederate. First Series: Embracing a Review of Military Operations with Regimental Histories and Memorial Rolls. Regimental Histories and Memorial Rolls. First Tennessee Infantry While at Winchester we received news of the fall of Fort Donelson--having previously been apprised of the disaster at Fishing Creek, Ky.--and intelligence was soon after communicated that the First Regiment was ordered to report to Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, then in command of the Army of Tennessee near Nashville. The journey westward was soon commenced, Gen. Anderson taking the Seventh and Fourteenth regiments and joining the Army of Northern Virginia, under command of Gen. Jos. E. Johnston, where Col. Turney's First Tennessee Regiment was attached to his brigade. This brigade served gallantly through the entire war, having its ranks fearfully decimated, and enduring all the hard-ships through which the Army of Northern Virginia passed. Gen. Anderson, however, soon resigned, and Col. Robert Hatton, of the Seventh Tennessee, succeeded him in command of the brigade, holding that position until he yielded up his life in the battle of Seven Pines. Tennessee lost a noble and gallant son when Robert Hatton fell, and he should ever be remembered by Tennesseans as one of their first brave martyrs of the Southern cause. This database is an index of claims presented to the State of New York for payment of expenses for military clothing and equipment provided by volunteers during the war. These claims were for clothing and equipment "which were depreciated, worn out, lost and destroyed in said service for which he had not received payment." Only the claims of those who performed duty "in the service of the State" were paid. Some additional claims were paid in good faith by the State, but as late as 1885, 17,228 claims were unpaid. Records indicate that these claims were never paid. The original declarations of claims from which the index was compiled are on file in the Bureau of War Records maintained by the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Public Security Building, Albany, New York, 12206. The declaration indicates the claimants name and military grade, inclusive period of service and land warrant, if any, granted as a result of his service. Source Information: Ancestry.com. At the time of Stony Point (1779) Captain Clough Shelton was in the 6th VA. It therefore follows that John Cason was also in the 6th VA and originally in the 10th VA. Have not found a VA Regimental Commander by the name of WALKER. Hopes this helps. Best regards, Hugh <[email protected]>

Wallace commanded the 15th VA which Col. Buford took over after Valley Forge-winter of 77-78. As I found no Colonel Walker is it possible that it was Wallace that commanded. 15th VA (Wallace's) was redesignated the 11th VA (Buford's) in Sept 1778 Lt Col Fleury (a French Engineer) commanded a provisional battalion of the 1st Light Infantry Regiment commanded by Col Febiger (formerly of the 2nd VA.) The 1st LI Regt. was a part of Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne's Corps of Light Infantry formed in May 1779 for the assault on Stony Point, NY, 15-16 July 1779. The Corps was disbanded in the winter of 1779 and the troops went back to their parent regiments for the move south. I assume the three year enlistment of John Cason ended in February 1780 while the VA troops were moving south to assist General Greene in the Southern theater. Gen. Wayne was PA Brigade Commander and did not command a VA organization although VA troops were often attached to his command. I will hazard an educated guess that John Cason served initially in the 6th VA which was merged with the 2nd VA in Sept 1778. Col. Febiger commanded the 2nd VA at the time that the Corps of Light Infantry was formed using all the Light Infantry Companies in the Main Army including those among the VA troops. Colonel Febiger was selected to be a Regimental Commander (one of four LI Regimental Commanders) in the Light Infantry Corps of 1779 tells me that he brought his Light Infantry Company with him. In this case Captain Clough Shelton probably was that LI Company Commander. I will try to varify this scenario. Can anyone deduce which Virginia Regiment John Cason enlisted in? His pension file #8184 provides the following information. He enlisted in Spotsylvania County, VA in February 1777 for three years under Captain Shelton in the regiment commanded by Colonel Walker and another undecipherable name. He also served under Colonel Fleury in General Wayne's division Virginia Line. He states he was marched to Williamsburg where the regiment was organized and from there to Danbury near the city of Philadelphia where the army went into winter quarters. In the spring they marched to New York and from there to the north. He was in the storming and taking of Stony Point in July 1779 where he continued for two months. From there they marched to the south to join General Gates army. On his way south at Fredericksburg, VA in February 1780, his term of enlistment expired and he was discharged. He served as a private. He was living in Anson County, NC when he filed his application for pension and died there in October 1834. Does anyone have an educated guess as to which Virginia regiment he was a member of? Thanks, Bob Turbyfill Augusta, GA
