    3. For a fictional treatment, see "Oliver Wiswell," by Kenneth Roberts (possibly the premier American historical novelist of the last century). The book looks at the Revolution from the Loyalist viewpoint and deals extensively with the siege at 96. Zuraff To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 10:45 PM Subject: captains in Dunmore's War David, I saw the posting reproduced below, in which you mentioned having done the biographies of the captains in Dunmore's War. When was that and which captains were you researching? Steve Z. From: "David Armstrong" < [email protected]> Subject: tories Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 12:01:18 -0400 Hi Warren Yes, I agree that this area was full of Tories. Before the war they would have been the politically conservative (like Ward's statement that the US owed England a debt). During the war many were double agents. I have a pay roll of Guy Carleton's Indian Dept. in 1776 and Simon Girty and Alexd. McKee are on it. This was two years BEFORE they "escaped " to Detroit. I also have a contemporary letter that says Girty made a run from Detroit back to the settlements to pick up a bundle of letters from a hollow tree, so there was comminication going on between this area and Detroit. I have been able to explain all of the behaviors of Timothy Dorman and am ready to write something about him. Also, as far as I am concerned my ancestor, Jacob Brake was a full-blown Tory who intended to link up with Cornwalis. Given the horrible situation Virginia was in at the time Morgan recommended clemency for if it had happened at any other time Brake would have danced on a rope. I think Buckhannon was a center of conservative (i.e. "Tory") politics as Dorman, Brake and the Schoolcrafts can all be found there and Simon Schoolcraft DID get a land grant in Canada. Best Regards David Armstrong Elkins, WV One of the things I kept bumping into when I did the biographies of the captains in Dunmore's War were stories about the Tories -- who were more numerous than I suspected. Almost every county seemed to have had a pocket of Loyalists. Alas the INLAND Virginians did not go to Canada, nor did they put in bills for their losses to the British government -- which makes them so much harder to identify than the contingents on the seabords in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, etc.

    1. Captain Robert GAMBLE of VA during RW
    2. RW Researchers: Captain Robert GAMBLE served as a Company Commander in the Corps of Light Infantry under BG Anthony Wayne during the period Jun 1779-Dec 1779. The Corps of Light Infantry (LI) was temporarily organized during this period in 1779 into four LI regiments using the LI Companies of the various line regiments then in the Main Army. Captain GAMBLE served in the 1st LI Regiment (Febiger's) of the LI Corps. According to the Orderly Book kept by Capt. GAMBLE during the fall of 1779 while assigned to the LI Corps he continued to command a company in the 1st LI Regiment. At the time of the Stony Point battle, 15-16 July 1779, the company was made up of men from the 7th and 8th VA Regiments . This document (Orderly Book) is identified as that of Captain Robert GAMBLE of the 2nd VA Regiment (Febiger's). I cannot find any substantiation of an association of GAMBLE with the 2nd VA Regt. GAMBLE, however, was in the 1st LI Regiment which Colonel Febiger commanded during the LI Corps' existence. The 1st LI Regiment was made up of 8 Companies, six of Virginians and two of Pennsylvanians. According to General Orders dated 12 June 1779, the following was the composition of the VA contingent: 2nd. & 5th. Virginia regiments to......furnish one and an half comp. of L. Infantry-62 men 11th & 7th. to.....furnish one company of Light Infantry-41 men 4th & 6th. to......furnish two companies of Light Infantry-82 men 2nd. St. Regt. & Gist's to....... furnish one company of Light Infantry-41 men 1st. St. Regt. & 1st. to ....... furnish half a company of Light Infantry-21 men In addition each LI company was to have two officers. _________ In 1781 Captain Robert GAMBLE served in the 8th VA as reported in a soldier's pension application. My problem is determining what was Captain Robert GAMBLE's parent VA regiment at the time he was temporarily assigned to the LI Corps of June 1779. GAMBLE doesn't seem to have been at Valley Forge in Feb 1778 (Oath of Allegiance). Any insight out there? Best regards, Hugh <[email protected]>
